YASD: OpWz^Uskayaw running venom bolt

I picked up Uskayaw from a forgotten altar. Decided not to abandon Uskayaw (yet) because a paralyzed octopode (from his god wrath) quickly becomes a dead octopode.
Uskayaw turned out all right - dealing damage with magic also grants piety, still granting me opportunities for hitting high-EV monsters with venom bolt, and for stabbing them. I've almost gotten myself killed a few times trying to walk up to a paralyzed enemy, because they wake up after 2 turns.

I've only found one book so far, which is the venom mage starting book. It has been interesting, playing as a venom mage. Many high-tier monsters, such as ugly things, are easy. Hydra's and Ice Beasts and other poison resistant things are hard. When I entered an ice cave and found myself surrounded by ice beasts and ugly things, I was terrified :lol:

I beat that entrance party by abusing that my wand of flame triggers Uska piety, and by using Stomp to weaken the ice beasts. The ugly beast died to a few venom bolts.

I've now completed most of Lair, Dungeon, Orc, and am planning to head into Elf.

No books in Orc :cry:

I decided to buy a shield, and get my shield skill up to 15.

Edit: I forgot about (poison immune) dancing blades, and various elementals. Dancing blades are horrible. I'm going somewhere else

Hmm. This looks like a pretty interesting weak start. Usk seems somewhat anti synergistic with stealthy octopodes but I'm not sure.

Not sure if going into Spider or Shoals as a first rune is better but I would think Shoals may be easier due to having a shield, and advantages of being waterborne as well as Spider generally being scary of a character with low AC. I'd advise getting Olgreb's toxic radiance for Spider though, it should be pretty good there.

I completed the dungeon, Shoal and Spider.
I should have done Spider earlier, Spider was ridiculously easy. I was afraid of getting poisoned to death, but I hardly got bitten at all. Most monsters were instantly killed by venom bolt, even entropy weavers didn't scare me. Only the Emperor Scorpions and Ghost Moths gave me trouble, and I killed those with Uska powers.
I found a staff of poison on D:15 (which gave me rPois), as well as a manual of short blades. I learned Spectral Weapon and Infusion for the sake of Uskayaw piety.
Shoals gave me Statue Form and Irradiate, both of which are castable now. The only things which can kill me now are hubris and boredom :roll:

Yes, I died. I got chewed up by an iron troll who was repeatedly duplicated by a rakshasa.
I was a little low on mp because they were part of a pack. I kept casting Venom Bolt and Irradiate to try to trigger Uksayaw piety, so that I could stab them, but that didn't happen. Earlier my experience was that 2 Irradiates were enough to paralyze everything.
Statue Form gave me enough durability that I could have escaped (teleported), but I had too much hubris...

I think I understand what happened now, but I didn't at the time. Probably because the trolls were duplicates, hurting them didn't grant piety. This made them much harder to fight, but I didn't realize because there was no visual indicator. A similar thing happened last time I played with Uskayaw, where I got killed by a combination of Trog Wrath Summons & TRJ spawn, neither of which granted piety.
Too bad. I was looking forward to exploding TRJ.

I might avoid Uska until the durable summon thing is fixed :cry:

PS: I think the ice cave vault ice_cave_statue_garden_transporter should be tweaked. It could kill a character who enters it whilst on low health, and it contains a transporter which leads to a room which you have no information about.

Not sure if going into Spider or Shoals as a first rune is better but I would think Shoals may be easier due to having a shield, and advantages of being waterborne as well as Spider generally being scary of a character with low AC. I'd advise getting Olgreb's toxic radiance for Spider though, it should be pretty good there.

Usk's pain bond applies stabbing damage to all enemies in sight. Even stuff like liches/OOFs take huge damage. I've had an Usk rapier stabber intentionally alarm trap Zot:5, use a corridor w/ stairs behind, and not have to go up the stairs because everything that came died. It was convenient that orb guardians took the front, they have good MR but are easy to confuse with bad touch or mephitic cloud, and everything behind them felt those stabs.

Usk paralysis doesn't last very long but it's still a tier 1 stab on anything, even stuff that normally would be difficult/impossible to paralyze. In tough 1v1 fights an Usk stabber also can line pass after very few hits with a faith amulet, which is forced confusion.

Main weakness of Usk is that it offers nothing in the way of escapes and it's not a strong god early in the game where piety buildup is still slow and some stuff can kill weak-ish characters in very few hits.

I disagree. The main weakness (which has killed me both times I played with Uska) is that fights with non-piety-granting opponents are much harder than fights with piety granting opponents, and sometimes it's not obvious a monster doesn't grant piety. Unexpectedly hard fights are usually the reason I die; when something is expected to be hard I'll be cautious enough to survive. I agree he's very strong most of the time.

Monsters that don't give XP/count for usk damage should be displayed/noted differently from monsters that do. That's an unambiguous flaw with the game UI, they should show up as either durable summons or regular summons, depending on how long they'll last. Or if it's mechanically justified to make them special, then give them a different color than purple/red.
