CIP: SpEn of Ely

Never been so far in the dungeon. I usually branch into Lair when I discover it and splat horribly against hydras, blinkfrog, spiny frogs or some other horrors I discover in the S-branches.
This time, I choose purposedly to dive as far as I could ignoring Lair and Orcish Mines.

I've never been so deep and there are many "first" for me : first skeletal warriors, first centaur warriors, ....first time meeting Frances.

Quick questions:
Hat of the Ponderous on a Spriggan : I still move at 0.7 aut. Does Ponderous hinder me in any other way I'm not aware of?

Spell diversification: As a Spriggan Stabber, I abused and overabused EH during my descent (even using a Ring of Ice for the sole purpose to gain some more MR checks on tough monsters).Worshipping Evy, I have to nop all necromancy spells. I begin to use Conjurations spells, particulary Fulminant Prism and Iskenderun's Mysti Blast, spells I'm not familiar with. Should I, in your opinion, drive some more exp into Conjurations to improve those spell's power?
Are there any other spells in my library who could help me when my Confuse/Confusing Touch/EH fail ?

Acid Dragon Armour in my backpack: Is it worth training Armour to wear it or am I better of on my MR+ Robe (I have MR on my Hat anyway).

I am slowly nearing D:15. Should I, in your opinion, continue to Depths? Or have a little try to Vaults before? Remember I have never seen any of those..

Did you read any of the beginner guides, especially the UV4 guide? The exploration sequence is pretty much set up, and if you deviate from it as a beginner, you're going to die again. First do D:1 to about D:11, then Lair, then Orc, then D down to D:15, then the S-branches, then Vaults 1-4 then Depths. The monster difficulty roughly corresponds to this order...

I'd like to add that Slime, while I guess counts as an S-branch, is much harder than the other four (Snake Pit, Spider Nest, Shoals, Swamp). You can leave it after Vaults and Depths.

Also, you don't need to train the armour skill to use the acid dragon scales, just wear them and get more AC. MR is useful (it prevents incoming hexes) however there's very very few things in the game that can beat MR+++ four plusses on MR is better than three, but not at the expense of more AC. Heavier armour may reduce your spell success (mitigated by strength, and very slightly by the armour skill), but dragon armour is generally light for the amount of protection it provides, and acid dragon is the second-lightest of the dragon armours, plus you've got high spellcasting skills anyway, you're unlikely to notice any sort of difference in practice.

No the pondering hat doesn't have any drawback beyond reducing your movement rate.

Monsters as you get lower will have better MR, so you'll need higher hex power on your skills to confuse/sleep them, however dazzling spray's blind effect isn't dependent on monster MR, so that's one way to get some stabs in against things that you have low confuse power against. Confusing touch also uses a different stat to determine your chances to confuse, so be aware of the that. You can use x while confusing touch is active to move your cursor over a critter to see your chances of confusing them on hit (similar to how you can see your chances to hex something when targeting it)

You've chosen some spells which aren't very good (gell's gravitas and force lance both do very poor damage, gell's at least can help with running away sometimes, force lance is only rarely helpful) generally speaking the translocation-based spells are great for escape, and not good for combat. Searing ray is actually better for doing single-target damage (once you understand the wonky "hit . to channnel" interface) than force lance or gell's, dispite it's lower spell level, as is IMB (which is less mana effecient, but better in damage per time than searing ray) It's definitely not worth increasing your translocations skill just to get better damage out of force lance or gell's.

Fulminent prism hits a wide area, but placement is tricky, it's very good with spriggan move speed, and you've got some extra power from your hex skill too, I'd use fulminent prism as your damage doer against more than one baddie. There are a lot of conjurations in the game, so it's likely you'll find more before very long if you start to rely on them when your hexes fail.

Be aware that explosions are loud, so prism will wake up any sleeping things in the general vacinity, I'd personally use spriggan speed to retreat and avoid things that are awake and that you can't hex to go around stabbing the already sleeping stuff in the general area before I started making loud explosions that would wake up some otherwise-easy sleep stabs. Also having things follow you back to already-cleared areas to blow them up with prisms is a good idea too.

Of the spells in your library:
Metabolic englaciation attempts to slows everything on screen that's not cold-resistant, so it's pretty good, expensive, but good.
Yara's can be used against anything that has any status magic (positive and negative) it will hit the targeted thing and the stuff around it, doing decent damage, removing status effects, and applying a debuff that (among other things) reduces their resistance to hexes, so it's situationally helpful.
Tukima's dance is super nice against stuff that wields nasty weapons, it yanks the weapon from their hand and and has it beat them up a bit, super good early against ogres, you probably don't need it now.
Lightning spire is probably the best bang for your buck, it does good repeatable damage, and is, itself a placeable blocker/damage doer that is very helpful for lots of situations, it's doesn't have anything in common with your current training though, so it's a 'maybe later' spell.
Guardain Golems aren't super good, they don't attack, but they suck in damage done to your other summons, they also explode in fire sometimes when they die. Don't stand next to one and it's an Ok blocker, and the explosion when it happens does decent damage to monsters, It's a moderately ok spell to support other summons, if you have them, but by itself is not very worth it. You *can* use it as a spriggan as like a really slow, and only sometimes effective fulminant prism that doesn't break the instant it's hit, but even in that role fulmenant prism is better and more reliable, and you already have it, so I'd likely skip it even though you don't need to train anything to cast it.

I would also stop training evocations for now, you only have one wand, and it's one of the weakest wands, and you have nothing else that evocations helps with (evocations makes wands and other "evocable" magic items better, so it's pretty good to train if you have some of those to use)

For future information, bows aren't very good for spriggans, you can't upgrade from a shortbow (spriggans can't use longbows because of their size), and it's two-handed, you can get just about as much damage from a hunting sling, which is one-handed (so you can use a buckler) plus slings are easier for spriggans to train, and ammo is plentiful, it's not that bows are *bad* but as a ranged weapon option, there's better choices for spriggans.

Identify that short sword by wielding it. A good brand will increase your damage a bunch, especially on non-stabs.

Many many thanks, especially to Siegurt. I'm still processing your spell's review.
As far as I can tell, Spriggan have (now?) +1 in bow skills like the slings.
I will definitivel try the runed short sword, totally forgot I had it. It is the only branded short blade I found in 13 levels of dungeon, while I get usually showered in branded daggers in all my other games.

I will let you know on Daeryl's future death as soon as I have some time to play it !

Quick update:

My runed short sword was in fact a cursed one...yeah
Cleared two more Dungeon levels.

D:14 provided me Short bow of Freezing, two artefacts amulets, and three artefacts rings!! After a bit of juggling, I settled for the setup you can see in morgue, improving both STR and DEX, allowing me to wear Acid Dragon Scales confortably. Took the Spirit Shield Amulet, lots of resistance covered but a glaring rF- bothers me a little (I am trying to convince myself I'll alaways have time to swap Ring of Protection from Fire)...



Now standing at Depths:1. Any Ideas/thoughts welcome!!

Bad luck on the short sword, but worth checking.

I'd replace the MR- randart ring with the ring of protection from fire. rF- is bad.

Is the bow doing anything that Magic Dart etc don't? I'd drop it and wear the buckler.

Next time, do D to 11 or so, then Lair, then Orc, then D to 15, then Swamp/Snake/Spider/Shoals (whatever you get, not Slime), then Vaults: 1 - 4 (not 5!), (then optionally Elf) and only after that Depths.
