One of my favorite builds for a straight forward, easy game. Trolls handle everything physical, but don't have much in the way of an aoe/magic solution, so you just pick up Qaz for invocations that don't require any int or magic skill training. Plus, free resistances, including AC. Run went pretty smoothly, and as my first game in the tournament, I had a 100% win rate. This was also a streak of 2 for my overall scoring, with the win before the tournament, but not a streak for tournament points.

So I managed to get a VS going all the way to statue form immediately after the troll, only to completely tab into Asterion without even noticing he was in the middle of a large pack. I sort of almost managed to clear them out with some slouches, but you know, not enough. One of the downsides to vine stalkers of Cheibriados is guardian spirit has a way of draining your mana and making it hard to step from time when you're down to around 25% life. Of course the solution there is to not be at 25% life, but some of us just need to tab, man.

It should be noted I picked VSGl because my favorite banner is Politician 3: steal a high score for a combo previously won with at least 10M points. VSGl had already been 15 runed in ~95k turns, so any 15 rune win faster than that would get me the banner. My typical 15 rune win these days is around 60-70k, without too much diving. So I decided to just keep trying until I succeeded...

This is where it starts to get painful. I don't think the game ever generated a single potion of mutation; when I entered pan I found Mnoleg's floor in 13 turns. And then:

And the character was never the same again. Any mutations gained/lost through a potion of mutation would say [a potion of mutation] right? There's none in the notes. I never removed any of the mutations. I cleared Pan and Hell, but the main risk to a statue form VS is always tomb, and tomb:3 was just infested with more mummies than I could handle. If I didn't have blurry vision I think I'd have been fine, but ouch...

Let's just repeat that shatter on player ghosts is complete BS, and this really isn't my fault. Sure, you might say that it's a player's responsibility to XV all player ghosts, I say they shouldn't have to. Ghosts shouldn't have a spell that randomly deals over 100 damage (post AC) because I happen to be in statue form. Please fix. It's largely similar to drowning in deep water, and should be likewise removed.

So shattering aside, this character took off and was having a grand old time, right up until extended, when things started to look a little too similar to the previous 14 rune death: I mutated with blurry vision and frail. I got frail within 20 turns of entering Pan, although the blurry vision didn't come in until later. When I cleared Mnoleg's floor, I had -20% hp and blurry vision, and after quaffing all my potions of mutation, still had -10% and blurry vision. And then tomb 3 did basically the same thing, although with slightly different setup. Basically as soon as I entered tomb 3, a monster entered a dispersal trap, blinked me south, and then another dispersal trap triggered again and blinked me south as well. I'm not sure if it was all one turn or two, but the end result is I was right next to a solid rectangle of about 4x6 mummies, all asleep. I don't think I've ever managed to walk down to them while they were all still sleeping, so it was cool to see their initial spawn location. Of course I should have just read teleport at that point, but I had to try to get a few slouches off before I left, and probably stayed here far too long. I did survive long enough for a few teleports to kick in, and landed in "slightly better" areas, but they still had monsters, and after resetting a few times, I was eventually worn down somewhere on the south west side of tomb:3, not near the entrance. This one I'm almost entirely sure I could have survived if I didn't have blurry vision.

"Call me a sinner, call me a saint" -- Just don't ever call me a quitter. Turns out Tomb is a lot easier without blurry vision and frail. Note that this character got -30% frail from Mnoleg's floor, but fortunately was able to remove all 3 stacks with only 4 potions of mutation (which was all I had). My final mutation set was mostly neutral, I'd say:

I mean subdued magic 2 sucks, and deterioration can hurt especially in areas which already drain your stats, but they're both managable and I have some bonuses like fire/cold resist, bone plates and repulsion field. Certainly better than frail and blurry vision. If only I had ever found a goddamned potion of mutation on that first 14/15 rune VS, I could have saved myself ~10 hours of deaths. After this win a fired up a centaur for an easy "fast" character who would be safe and streak, but we all know how much I hate being fast, and it died to a hornet's paralysis. So then...

Got a naga necromancer off the ground after struggling for a fair amount of the early game, always feeling just slightly underpowered, but still able to make forward progress. Might have been a side effect of having played so many overpowered VS, but either way, I had a "won game" on my hands. I went with blade hands so I could still get my +9 scales AC and naga barding. I wasn't super thrilled with my body armor choices, not really having anything heavy enough with a resistance I liked. My barding was already rF, so I didn't want to wear the rF plate and have no cold resistance. Ended up using +0 ice dragon scales for a while instead. Would have loved CPA; there were gold dragon scales in a shop, but 1) they were 2800 coins, and 2) I was very low on enchant armor scrolls. Either way, what mostly did me in was the lack of rN and not taking a pack of vaults monsters which included a shadow dragon seriously enough. I had *plenty* of time to blink to nearby stairs and leave the floor, but in typical fashion, decided to roll the dice on killing the shadow dragon instead. I think I might be a bit too risky of a player these days, it's not like resetting the fight would have been that hard, really. I had 4 scrolls of blinking.

Final thoughts
Overall I'm somewhat disappointed with my results, but I primarily blame that on real life scheduling issues. Certainly the wasted time with the two 14 rune deaths in tomb where a major factor as well, but I think the horrible lack of mutation potions both times was at least somewhat out of my control. It'd have been possible to try to farm a zigg for them, but I don't think I should have to and I didn't really want to. While it would only add a couple thousand of turns, there isn't really a guarantee that it'd be significantly safer than tomb:3 if I got a bad floor with pan lords or mummies or whatever.

It did hurt a bit to not win that final naga which would have been both a 3rd win as well as an important 'naga' win, since I have a bit of a naga reputation, but ah well. Next tournament I'll try to play a bit more carefully (and therefore, end up with only 1 win) :P

I'm thinking maybe we need some sort of guaranteed potion of mutation system like there is a guarantee of a certain amount of food. While it's rare, that first 14/15 rune death literally had zero potions of mutation. This makes getting out of Mnoleg's floor in a decent state nearly impossible. Of course, you don't technically have to run extended, but you don't get a politician 3 banner without 15 runes. The previously certain potions of cure mutation (when those existed) in the holy pan Zin altar don't exist anymore, apparently because of the flavor mismatch of turning those into potions of mutation. Fine, I suppose, but we need somewhere to go in order to unmutate ourselves, I say....

If Tomb is so dangerous, maybe train Necromutation for it? It wouldn't take too much time with those Int 37 and

Yeah, the ghosts 'problem' was pretty much resolved by the ghost valuts, why would you even let out an uber-powerful ghost?

The ghost thing is really more a complaint about Shatter/flying/statue form interactions, but that's been around for years and seems like it's going to continue to be that way. Generally speaking, the character was overpowered enough to not really fear any ghost, except when shatter suddenly does x6 damage* and shatter is a spell you so rarely see monsters with. I think it's only ghosts, Jorgrun, and maybe panlords? Not sure if panlords lost the ability to cast it or not, I think it was removed from them.

The thing about Necromutation and tomb is I'm not sure if it's really an improvement. It would be less AC and less damage, but more resistance to torment/rN. Generally though I think statue has enough defense both with the 50% torment resistance and rN+, but maybe the full immunity would be worth it. I should probably give it a shot. Plus, it fits in with the theme of "slow and steady" :)

*x6 damage is based off shatter doing x2 damage to statue form and 1/3 damage to flying.

When I look at your turncount *and* your complaining about low # of mut potions I have to say: there probably were mut potions but not on your way to a low turncount :)

While it's possible I dove past a few towards the end, really these runs explore floors 100% and aren't leaving ground uncovered. It was just bad luck. I'd like to see some floor get a guaranteed 2-3 mutation potions, maybe in depths?
