[CIP] DrWr^Qaz - new player, 2/3 runes, what's my play?

I'm pretty new to the game, and playing a Draconian Warper of Qazlal. The tl;dr of the character is:
  • Draconian inherent bonuses (and Ozocubu's if I can find it) for non-terrible AC
  • Train dodging for non-terrible EV
  • Use a shield + Qazlal for non-terrible SH
  • Hit things with axes to take advantage of Qazlal passive clouds liking open spaces
  • Use Qaz invocations as oh-shit buttons
  • Modest spellcasting (Shroud, Blink, Regeneration, maybe some summons in the late game if I can get it going)
It's going...okay. I'm at 2/3 runes, having cleared Dungeon, Lair, Orc, Spider, and Shoals, which is about as far as I've ever gotten, and worried I've hit a wall. The issues are:
  • My weapons are mediocre. I have a +4 hand axe of elec, a +1 broad axe of freezing, and a semi-decent randart trident (close to trident mindelay just from axes crosstraining). I have one scroll of brand weapon, which I'd like to use to get a better broad axe, but the one I'm carrying is literally the only broad axe that has spawned all game.
  • I've found 0 sources of rCold all game (I even cleared an Ice Cave, but no luck).
  • I'm not confident I've skilled reasonably.
I've poked my head into both Depths 1 and Vaults 1, and they're both really scary. A frost giant almost killed me in Depths, and a Rakshasa did something scary that took away like a third of my health in Vaults. But I don't think I have anywhere else to go, so it's gotta be one of those.

*edit* Wait, I forgot about Slime. There is a ring of rCorr sitting around somewhere. Would that be better than Vaults or Depths?

What's my play? Where should I go, what should I skill, what should I be most scared of, etc.?

You have a lot of Axes skill and a great broad axe, but instead you are using a trident? That is hard to understand. (Plus that trident is pretty bad)

I am also not a fan of using a large shield on a spellcaster. It kills your spell success. Even though it is a bit hard to guess what you want with your spells anyway, iron shot and servitor are both at 100% fail rate.

Is the broad axe good? I've been assuming it's not great because it's only +1 and lots of things have cold resist, but I don't actually know how important base damage is compared to enchantment. Is the axe better, should I be using that most of the time? I've been using it for clearing not-super-scary packs, and then swapping into using the trident to 1v1 scary things in hallways, but I don't know if that's actually correct.

I wish I hadn't used 3 enchant weapon scrolls on my hand axe now, but I was trying not to fall for the "saving things for late game and then dying because your early game is weak" thing that's gotten me before.

I wish my shield weren't a large shield but it's the only decent shield I've found, and I think rPois is important (though I guess less so now that I'm done with Lair and Spider). The Conjurations are hail-mary late game maybe's, I'm not trying to cast them for now. At the moment I'm buffing with Shroud, hitting things with weapons, and dropping Qazlal explosions when I need them.

So large shields aren't strictly speaking *bad* they just take a silly amount of XP to work off the penalties (getting your Shield skill to 25 from 15 for a regular shield is about like getting two other skills to 20 from 0) So they are usually reserved for "I don't really have anywhere else productive to put my XP" and by the time you get to that point, shields aren't as awesome (as there's a fair number of things that can bypass shields later in the game, which makes them not quite as cool as they are in the mid game, still good though)

Base damage scales with skill, which means that at 0 skill it's about as good as enchantment, but as your fighting and weapon skill increase, the base damage gets a bonus. This means that higher base damage is much better as you get later into the game.

So ignoring brand, your broad axe is going to do more than the trident by a fair amount.

Holy does *nothing* against things that aren't susceptible (mostly demons and undead), but does do a significant amount of damage to those critters. Freezing does less damage than holy does when holy works, but freezing will work on most things, if something is cold resistant that means it takes *less* damage from cold, not none. So overall, the freezing broad axe will probably handily beat the trident in most cases, and in the best case for the trident, it will be about the same to maybe slightly worse.

Both Holy and Freezing are what are called 'multiplicative' brands, in that the amount of bonus damage they do is based on the amount of weapon damage you do before the brand is applied, getting freezing on a dagger for example isn't very impressive, because there's not a whole lot of pre-brand damage to multiply (even with high skill)

Electricity (and a few others) are what are referred to as 'flat' brands, as the amount of damage they do doesn't vary with the amount of pre-brand damage you do, an elec hand axe is actually probably better than a holy trident a lot of the time, because you can swing a hand axe a lot of times, and every time it hits, it has a chance of doing the electrical damage (and being an axe, you can hit more times per swing)

The upshot of all this is that your broad axe is probably your best weapon most of the time right now, you can use a scroll to rebrand it, but freezing isn't a bad brand, and there's a not insignificant chance you'd make it worse, so I wouldn't chance it.

However the reaching from a trident can actually be useful in some circumstances, if you end up with something that's at range 2 and won't approach because it doesn't want to step into a hostile cloud, for example, you can poke it at range for free, I just wouldn't make it my primary weapon.

Vaults: 1 - 4 is what you want to do next (not 5!). Then optionally Elf, then Depths, then optionally Crypt (not Tomb!). Then the 3rd rune from either V:5 or Slime.
