Hmm, I definitely avoid plain harm, put +6 slaying is interesting. I'd keep it on, but look for other options. (Gourmand is definitely not better.)

You didn't ask, but you should identify some of those scrolls. You've got 5 scrolls of indentity and 6 un-identified scrolls. I'd read-id the 2 big stacks. There could be an acquirement in there!

Harm is good for almost all characters. Improved outgoing:incoming damage ratio = you take less damage overall, because you kill things faster. Of course you want to take it off when you're running away, but that's ok, it's very fast to take off amulets and the drain isn't that bad.

The fact that you're with Chei (WHY) does complicate things a bit though.

Oh right, that sucks ! But Chei is one of my favourite gods, Ba are slow anyway, and since there are no god whose name starts with "An" (to play a BaTmAn char), then Chei we go :D

Edit: can plain Regen be considered as a better amulet ?

Transmutations Book available in Lair, I really like every spell in it (Hydra Form, Statue Form, Irradiate, Dragon Form), even if most of them are maybe less powerful than Chei-BH...

I kept running the Harm amulet. Other options are now Regen and Faith, the latter probably being the best one and I might swap for runes.

I'd remove it ASAP. You were at 2 HP at one point according to dump.
Harm amulet can be useful for characters with strong ranged attack, especially AoE, when you kill monsters before they are able to attack you, but I don't see how it can be good for melee character (unless it is DD of Makhleb with vampiric axe I guess), even with that slaying.

Well if you fight 1vs1, when necessary, it's good because you deal more damage than you suffer, so assuming "optimal play" is a good amulet even for melee char.

I would definitely not wear with a common^chei char, and I avoid also to wear in 99% of cases because I never play "optimally"

It seems like harm is always good on average, but it does make the worst case worse, if your worst case scenario without harm would be "almost dies in one shot from current health" then harm is pretty clearly a bad choice to be wearing.

Now i feel like you (theoretically) should never *be* in a scenario where that is your worst case (if you are you are either playing incredibly risky on purpose, or made a mistake and did something terribly wrong) but if you do have worse max hps, you do get pushed to that worst case much more quickly on average, so it is easier to make a mistake and leave yourself in the situation where harm is bad.

For the optimal player, harm is very good. Personally, I would never ever use it, because my sloppy play gets me time and time again in near-death situations.

Why it is true, there is an intrinsic problem with it i.e. optimal player will win no matter if wearing the amulet or not. Hence there are no players for whom the amulet would allow to win a game which otherwise would be lost but I easily can see how the amulet would make you lose a game which would be won without the amulet. That means the item is strictly bad IMHO, there are no "100% optimal" players.

For the record, as far as harm's power is concerned, it doesn't actually matter how many monsters you're fighting at once. Killing the monster(s) 30% faster on average is going to give them 23% fewer actions on average, meaning they deal 23% less damage to you on average, meaning that on average, you lose 92% of the HP that you would have lost without wearing harm. This holds whether you're fighting 1 monster or 10.

This theoretical benefit seems small, because it is, but consider that in practice you will usually get the first strike against a monster, and if you're using ranged attacks you will get several attacks against most monsters before they get in range to attack you - in this case harm is very good.

The situations where harm is a problem are specifically those where you are taking damage, but do not plan to deal any damage. This is where sloppy play is a problem; if you have to run away/teleport/whatever, and you forget to take off harm, then the amulet is acting as a big disadvantage. The ideal way to use harm is usually quite swap-heavy, despite the drain. What a fun item. (The actual time spent taking it off is seldom a problem, it's 5 aut and if you're waiting for a teleport anyway...)

I will suggest (without proof) that it is beneficial to most ranged characters even if you forget to take it off, however.

Well, if harm lets you kill roughly 8% more efficiently (using duvessa's numbers, I haven't done the math, but that sounds right to me), that should translate into having to use consumables and emergency items 8% less of the time, which *should* give you 8% more emergency items available for emergencies. And that doesn't include the situations in which it's strictly an advantage (ranged against melee-only creatures)

The real problem with Harm is that you want to take it off in certain circumstances, and doing so causes drain, which feels bad, and makes you want to drop it because who wants to carry around something that you don't want to use all the time. (Plus remembering to take it off is one more chunk of cognitive load that not everyone enjoys adding to the number of things that you need to pay attention to.) The other problem is that it throws off your expectations, if you internalize how much damage things do, harm throws off that expectation.

8%??? So it is irrelevant in most 1 vs 1 fights and then you meet a monster which can kill you from range in 2-3 attacks (instead of 3-4 attacks when harm is not equipped)? No, thank you.

So if a creature can kill you at range in 2-4 attacks, you *probably* shouldn't be fighting that creature, and should be fleeing instead, and as previously discussed, when you're faced with something you should flee, the optimal action is to remove the amulet of harm (hence the comment about the draining feeling bad.) So no, you shouldn't be wearing harm in such a combat, (probably you should ideally be wearing an amulet of the acrobat or regen or something else that is beneficial when you aren't fighting things)

Yes, the amulet of harm is detrimental in situations when you shouldn't be fighting, and should be running away instead. And yes, the drain feels unpleasant to want to remove it for those situations (as compared to, for example, removing an rC- item when faced with something that dangerous could do cold damage, which doesn't feel as bad, but is no less optimal of an action)

If you *are* going to fight something that can kill you in 2-4 attacks, (presumably because you believe you can beat it in one attack) wearing harm increases your average odds of success (over wearing nothing), as terrible as those odds are.

For the vast majority of combats where it's reasonable to fight things, harm is beneficial, and using it in those situations decreases the likelihood that you'll be in an emergency situation due to being overwhelmed by about 8%

There are other situations in which harm isn't useful too, for example it is pretty much meaningless when stabbing. I don't think anyone is claiming "Harm is the best amulet and you should put it on and never take it off ever on every character ever" There are some circumstances for which it's the best thing to wear, if you're unwilling or unable to manage removing it when it's detrimental, then yes, you probably shouldn't wear it.

Seems to me that Crawl is filled with situations where if you have to ask whether you should or not you 100% shouldn't. I think that this can tend towards a fairly limited playstyle, where it's difficult to experiment unless you have a lot of experience or you have the capacity and interest to dig into the formulae and do the math. I still don't understand whether a ring which gives +6 Str and -3 Slaying is good or bad on a melee character and I have looked into it a decent amount.

Berserk with Chei still gives you 50% HP and might but not haste. Of course you are still slowed and exhausted when it ends.

Bezerkitis is generally considered a very dangerous mutation on a melee character because it removes a lot of choices about how you are going to fight. I'd bank the win.

I quaffed the remaining !mutations laying around and got rid of berserkitis... Went for Hell runes and now have Pan and Tomb to go. I might try to get Tornado online for the fun, all XP is now spare...

Maybe I'll use some Necromut in Pan too to avoid further mutations, no more !mut in all dungeon...
