CIP: VpEn^Sif Reflections
Working on a VpEn^Sif, haven't played sif since the rework, wanted to get some thoughts down about the character.
History
Sif was an early altar so I figured I'd try it out. I like the new sif. Early pickups were a ring of prot fire and a ring of ice, followed by a book of callings and a +2 archmage robe. Character transitioned from rolling an double boosted ensorcelled hibernation into an ice beast summoner.
Had a major problem at snake 3. Four uniques, Vashnia was a terror. Character is weak to ranged attacks. Bounced to swamp, but couldn't get a foothold inside of swamp 1, greeted by a Nikola and a shambling mangrove. I got nikola down but didn't have the juice to deal with the mangrove. Luckilly Sif came through with summon forest which stabilized the character. I picked up mana viper shortly thereafter and I feel like I'm on pace again.
Finished up vaults 1 now, Yaktaurs are the biggest problem thus far, but wardens could be lethal too. I just bought the shield of resistance in a caravan and am training shields to bring it online. It should help significantly against ranged attacks, which are the bane of my existence.
I have a few skilling inefficiencies where I left some skills on for too long (i'm looking at you charms, necromancy, conjurations). I'm not too worried about them.
Observations
Observation 0: Goddamn I miss spell invisibility. I really wish potion invisibility was more common now that the spell was removed. (edit: i'm an idiot, spell invis is still in the game)
Observation 1: Hexer Summoner is solid but not straightforward. The two playstyles differ too much. Approaching a fight as a hexer is a silent solo affair. Approaching a fight as a summoner, especially right now as a forest summoner, is a noisy brawl. Hexes help mop up fights after a summon battle has thinned the herd, but these fights frequently are not 'important'. Through Orc, Lair, and D15 I was generally approaching nearly everything as a hexer, but setting up on fights as a hexer in sbranches and vaults leaves you more vulnerable as monsters are often quicker and come in larger packs. At some point in time i took off my ring of ice because ensorcelled hibernation wasn't my bread and butter anymore.
If I choose to initiate a fight as a hexer i give up the chance to initiate as a summoner, and vice versa. The two different initiations don't transition well into each other. This is made more sever by (1) the lack of invisibility, (2) my use of a staff of power, but mitigated to some extent by Sif Muna. At least enough stealth usually gives me the choice of how to initiate.
Observation 2: I'm kind of underwhelmed by hexes midgame at the moment. I have yaras and mana vipers both of which i've used a good amount to good effect. I learned metabolic englaciation but never cast it, forgetting it in favor of mana vipers (i've never really managed to make englaciaton useful on any character.) I have darkness and silence available, but neither seem incredibly appealing. Maybe I'm undervaluing darkness. Silence is trash on this character, though on a different (beefier) hexer build would fine. Invisibility was always the glue that held the school together, and right now it sorta feels like where poison school has been for a while. At least discord gives hexes an endgame, however.
Hexes as a school makes a decent amount of sense now that I understand spell invis is just reduced in availability, not removed. I still had plenty of tools to struggle through the midgame, and honestly, invis wouldn't have helped in snake where I had the most problems. I would have been less worried about yaktaurs with spell invis.
Sidenote: Both metabolic englaciation and ozo's refrigeration feel underwhelming. Do people use these spells to good effect?
Observation 3: Sif Muna is pretty nice. I estimate divine energy works out to a bigger base MP pool and ~triple?~ MP regen (edit: this is probably wrong) when you are out of MP and are using it. Furthermore, it doesn't feel like i'm helpless when I'm out of MP, which is a problem specifically for summoners but also mages in general. I suspect mages that draw out fights into longer time consuming affairs use it to better effect than glass blastermages who are chaingunning spells to end fights as quickly as possible or, alternatively, reset as quickly as possible.
Divine energy just feels -nice- with this character.
I'm probably not using channel enough, but channel is also more geared to the aforementioned blastermage.
Observation 4: Vampire summoners are the best summoner. Not worrying about food feels so good. If you hate vampires because of the fiddly food system, and hate summoners because you're always starving, play a vampire summoner. They feel great.
Looking Ahead
I'm missing one major spell, blink, which is a snap learn as soon as I get it. It would have gotten me out of a couple jams cleanly. I'm low on blink scrolls, and teleing before I've cleared half a floor is a shot in the dark with a character this fragile.
Vaults could give me a small room with a warden where I can't escape and can't forest. I have 21 wand of acid that hopefully should be able to get me out of these kinds of encounter if they come up as long as I start gunning early before a fight turns sour, and i'll re-evaluate if I run low on charges.
Mennas is terrifying in general. Mennas spawning with a warden unfavorably is probably gameover.
I'm really hoping going from +2 buckler to the +2 shield of resistance gives me some stability vs ranged attacks. DMsl is not available. I'm not sure if it is a priority if it was. I'll get a feel for how stable the shield makes me. I feel like DMsl at this point pushes me towards freezing cloud, whereas if I can delay DMsl til after Depths I can omit Fcloud.
Forest is not amazing in Depths like it is in sbranches, the dryad gets killed too quickly. Forest is functional in vaults but does not troubleshoot all problems. Shadow creatures is available, however, and gives a natural transition into depths with minimal investment.
Yara's is strong in elf, but I don't like clearing elf 1 and 2 as a vampire. Those floors are the bloodbank if needed. I'll probably do hall of blades looking for a quickblade. I might attempt elf 3 pre-depths. I don't know if yaras + summons is enough to carry the vault on this character though. It might depends on which vault spawns.
Discord, XXX, and the Great Tentacle are all missing from my spellbook. Cblink is available, disjunction is not. I don't know how quickly these holes are going to be filled by sif. I'd really like discord and blink for depths, I'd like a bigger summon than shadow creatures for the endgame, and I'd really like disjunction for extended. Tentacle + CBlink + Disjunction + bat + darkness is just a damn quick and sneaky character with just enough gas to punch through something if you need to.
Alternatively, death channel and shadow creatures might let me steamroll depths, but I don't have haunt to build into, and have never really been impressed with the spell. Haunt might work better than previous experiences for this character though.
Dragon's call is available. Its not a bad spell. I usually favor the previously mentioned summons but I can play with it too. It probably works pretty well with channel. I've never felt that the spell brings the same oomph that the other lvl 9s do.
I haven't decided if I'm going extended or not. I really like the way vampires play in extended, bloodless bat ninjas all runes (one of the funnest ways to play extended IMO), but as vaults comes to a close, it is approaching the time to make the decision. I'll probably do extended just to see how sif extended feels, regardless of whether or not it is a good choice.
I don't know how much value i'm getting out of archmage at the moment.
