YAVP: GrEE of the Long Haitus

Hello again! Been a while. I went and all runed a game, mostly just to prove that I still could. Been over a year since I last touched the game, and I haven't played seriously since... 0.12? 0.14? Something like that.

Ran a GrEE since EE's are my favorite of the E's, and Gr's make nice non-squishy casters.

Some highlights:
  • I found that +8 int robe in a shop pretty early on, which made rushing to LRD a breeze.
  • I kept finding plain and randart rings of wizardry in the early game that I just didn't need. I blame Xom.
  • I tried to give Leda's a chance, I really did. Used it a little in Orc, but really it's just kind of disappointing. It's also completely upstaged by BVC and incompatible with flight.
  • BVC was a very nice surprise. It does so many things! LRD has been the EE's best friend, but now you have two.
    • A crowd or area control option for out in the open to compliment LRD's wall-adjacent solutions.
    • It traps enemies at range so you can blast them better than Leda's does.
    • You can use it to pin meatshields in front of monsters with dangerous ranged attacks.
    • Grab Pan or Hell Lords with lots of evasion, and now they can't dodge your crystal spears.
    • Slowly crush neqoxecs and other mutaters to death while you laugh behind your wall of butterflies.
  • Bolt of Magma was more useful than it usually is. The end vaults in both Elf and Spider had choke points with shallow water, and I got the Shoals (LRD don't work without walls, and BVC don't work in deep water). So there was a lot of magma flooding vaults with scalding steam and stopping too many things from having LOS at once.
  • Also helping BVC and BoM was that I found staves of death and fire before earth.
  • I picked up Ignite Poison to blow up Spider, only to discover all the fun had been nerfed out of it, and forgot it without casting it once.
  • The Elf endvault was a straight up slugging match that went much easier than expected, especially as I was low on elemental resistances. Just walked right up to the entrance and started blasting until everything was dead. Didn't have to retreat for hp or mp at all.
  • I got LCS and Shatter online earlier than I ever have before, well before endgame or the post endgame.
  • Cleared the last floor of the Vaults by spamming shatter until things stopped coming. Unlike Elf, I regrettably did have to duck upstairs to heal.
  • Jorgrun, sworn enemy of gargoyles and rival EE, had the misfortune to encounter me in LCS range. He didn't get a single action in.
  • The last floor of Slime was more annoying than I remember. Normally I pick off the slimes around the perimeter, and then engage TRJ in the center vault which contains his spawn, but nope, he decided to come out of the vault and charge the stairs almost immediately. And he regains his hp now, so you can't kite him. LCS to the face followed by BoM spam through the slimes did him in eventually, followed by a tedious mopup.
  • Deflect Missiles now has an open ended duration! How convenient. If I'd know that I would have memorized it a little earlier, although I think I didn't find it until I was most way through Hell, anyway.
  • I'm carrying literally every crossbow bolt, arrow, and stone that spawned. (Minus the ones that mulched). Someone took away weight limits on inventory, I can do that now.
  • I went to Hell with something like 20 unused spell slots. I already had all the raw killing power I needed, and most the buff or utility spells I usually grab either weren't in the game anymore, or I never found. Haste, Dig, Stoneskin, Phase Shift: gone. Flight: gargoyle, and gone. Spellbound Servitor, Controlled Blink: never found. The slots were burning a hole in my pocket so I grabbed Firestorm just so I had the option of killing a bunch of things without wrecking the terrain, and Bolt of Cold... uh, because I figured I might cast it a few times in Geh for the hell of it.
  • I found Blink really late. By the time I finally found a spellbook I only had 1 Pan rune and the Tomb left.
  • I picked up the "You do not regenerate when monsters are visible" mutation in Zot, and was initially rather concerned that was going to be a problem for the post endgame branches. Didn't really end up being so- it just meant I had to be a little more careful of when it was time to retreat, and that casting Regeneration was something I did more after fights than before (unless I expected it was a fight I would have to run from).
  • The amulets available seem to have completely changed, and most of what I found honestly didn't seem worth my time. I had reflect on most the game cause I found it early. I suspected that artefact harm amulet might be better, but I don't know the formula it used, and there wasn't much I couldn't already kill in one or two shots anyways, so I didn't chance it.
  • Haste now being a limited resource had me concerned the Hell and Pan Lord fights might be harder than usual... but they really weren't. Most went down to Brillance + BVC + LCS. Cerebov needed haste. Ereshkigal got Shatter spammed. Lom Lobon just strangled by BVC at the edge of LOS while ball lightning exploded fruitlessly without reaching me.
  • My rations fell into the single digits 2 or 3 Hells in, so I took a jaunt through the Abyss to go shopping.
  • Someone made all the staircases in the Tomb one way! That was a very unwelcome surprise. Sure, I had plenty of consumables and firepower to deal with that, but rude.
  • Had something like 6-10 points of stat drain in each stat after the Tomb. So I took another scenic Abyss vacation for my health.
  • There sure weren't a lot of things bothering me on the ascension run. Only 2 pan lords, really? And a seraph, but he showed up when I was halfway passwalled through a shortcut already, so he survived.
  • A lot of the later uniques I was hoping to splat were apparently too cowardly to spawn and face me. No Boris, Mara, Mennos, Saint Roka, Xtahua, Tiamat.
  • I don't think I actually used Shatter to sequence break into anything. That's for people trying to grab runes and run, not for people who go around beating up demon lords for lunch money.
