Is the eveningstar or the dwhip better? Am I ready for V5? In the past, I typically just stairdanced the middle, but I have read that it is better to teleport away and fight on the edges/in the vaults. Should I learn bolt of lightning or freezing cloud? I know that magma is the worst bolt. Gnolls seem really strong. My character is decent at melee, decent at throwing (but Oka keeps giving me bolts and arrows, which I can't use, as ranged weapons mostly disallow shields or are bad (hand crossbow), decent at blasting, decent at evocations, and decent at charms/hexes. Also, should I use this +2 mundane shield or a +0 artifact shield with rN+ Stealth+ MR+?

The demon whip is better.

In Vaults:5 either stair dance (watch out for vault wardens) or blink/move to the edge of the level (halfway to the corner in one of the side corridors). Haste, Blinking and Swiftness are useful for achieving the latter. Don't teleport, unless you are in big trouble.

Why is the dwhip better? Against high AC opponents, wouldn't the eveningstar deal more damage? And why should I not teleport? How will I get past the initial ambush? I always stairdanced in the past.

You can use fsim to check. Dwhip is better against almost all enemies. Exceptions are things which are elec resistant.

You get past the initial ambush on V:5 by moving or blinking.

immolation is a good idea on V5 welcome party, since you have decent AC and rF+++. Sure, it's going to attract a lot of enemies to the center. That's why you teleport out of the center after you've blown everything up. Now, everything has been drawn away from wherever you teleport (probably) so the noise works to your advantage. Of course, if you teleport to a place full of monsters, just teleport again.

Also, use Magic Mapping to find out which quadrants are least open/have narrow corridors in them. Those would be the safer quadrants and you want to land in one of those or walk to one of those after you teleport. Alternatively if there are few monsters where you have teleported to, you can fight at one of the corners of the map using a wall for cover, or try to rest in one of the corridors at the edge of the map.
