Okay, just maybe getting going with another ogre caster after many attempts... This one is mostly using spells, although with the lovely white Slay ring and recent weapons (white mace, evening star), I can also do some real melee damage.
8-)

But what would you do with this ghost? It has resists to both fire and cold, which are my main attack modes so far. It can fairly well whop me in standard melee. I can sort of avoid it, but I want to clear Orc: 2 before long and see the rest of the shops.

Could back out and try D:14-maybe 15 first (or some of Swamp), but feeling rather iffy about those yet.

Here are the things I can think of for the ghost right away:

1. Send summons at it and pelt it with the Wand of Acid (but low Evocations) or maybe some Icicles. I tried this earlier and somehow (luck?) it took a few turns to cut through 2 ice beasts. Unfortunately, the ice beasts were also mostly blocking my line of fire and I'm not sure it would sit still for long if they weren't.

2. Play cloud attrition with Freezing Cloud (or Immolation and some quick kills at range) and maybe Lamp of Fire, probably using some Potions of Magic to keep the jig up until it's gone. Maybe see if some ice beasts can keep it busy inside the freezing cloud. Kind of leaning toward this. Not sure how long it would take though.

3. Take it on an excursion somewhere along a remote edge of the floor, dig a tunnel away from everything with some wand charges, teleport out and leave it in there. I still have a lot of the floor to explore though, so it would probably find its way over again.

4. Get some orcs to happen to be in its way, enslave some of them and/or Inner Flame some for more cloud kiting. Seems like a lot of work to set up though, with this map.

5. Quaff Lignification and Haste, take a go with the holy flail. This might flop except for a quick finisher, though. Not keen on that idea.

Can you simply summon some stuff, inner flame it and let it chase you in the middle of clouds?
You could add freezing clouds and let it chase you.

Actually, the best solution is probably to avoid it altogether. Lead it to the top, that small peninsula in the top middle of the map.

Amusingly, the ghost has the worst skilling I've ever seen (and that is saying something). Trained 11 skills simultaneously, including: stealth (in crystal plate), unarmed (with an axe using character), spellcasting (and no spell schools and no memorized spells), plus throwing AND bows.

(I am starting to think that _maybe_ it is possible for a human to do worse skilling than auto mode does).

Eh, the spellcasting does seem a little odd... But I've often trained more than one weapon category just because drops. It's rarely optimal, but not beyond explanation.

It seems this was a bit of a false alarm. Earlier I met the ghost almost right away when I came down the stairs (and probably after I sealed the deal by bolting and blasting nearby ogres and orcs). So I'd somehow imagined it would just pick up on my presence again where I was standing in the picture, but no. This time, with my whopping 2 stealth and whatever else it was doing, it somehow didn't even notice me as I ducked back into the halls. It did catch up at the entrance as I was on the way out, but didn't really have to engage it again yet.

Shops were okay but not stunning (good bunch of consumables and books maybe for later). Working through the rest of Dungeon. Kinda hoping for the lovely Bolt of Fire. Killed Rupert on D:15 and got a holy great mace... Awesome stuff if the ogre gets far enough to train it up. Not to mention that whopping Dragon King armor from earlier. Same typical "you'd love to use this many levels later, wouldn't you?" :lol:

I'd still consider switching to dragon king armour. Str 20, slaying, no dodging, good weapons.

Finished Swamp and got OOD online. Working on Spellforged Servitor, and maybe some Shields. Have Swamp Dragon armor and Fire scales for intermediate stuff later. Battlesphere is also about in a book when spell slots get open enough. Now if I can not get smacked in the notorious entrance to Spider... I don't have much venom stuff, unfortunately. Oh... Actually can get Mephitic Cloud for a start.

It's up to you of course, staying a primarily caster is fine too. I remember a game as Mu where I struggled as spellcaster until in Depths I finally gave up on casting and used dragon armour king. I had Str below 20 and used something with a shield, giant club is not a prerequisite for using the armour :) +5 evening star is an excellent weapon when you have high defense and casting level 4 spells means you still can use sticky flame. IMHO ogres and mummies have a common problem with spell power, they cannot train magic schools too high.

Meh, I've never had good luck with Spider and anything so low on EV. :evil: And yes, I've gone in with pretty heavy armor too fwiw.

Was doing well for a while, but ran into an emperor scorpion and a pack of other things too far from the entrance. Never enough magic for all that.

Teleported right into another pack, even through probably at least 3/4 of the floor was cleared. Splat.
