YASD - DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

Died of stupidity.

Hi everybody,

I really don't know why, but this draconian ice elementalist looks very very weak: I had to skip Saint Roka, was unable to damage him (not kill, I wasnt doing pretty much anything to him with cold bolt...).
Had to skip Spiders, Arachna was nearly killing me 2-3 times.
Had to skip Elves, can't deal with animated weapons, a dire flail was almost killing me.
I went to Vault. I forgot to remove ring of teleport (my bad :| I was trying to escape to the fire flail above and I ran out of TP scrolls...) and I went into a dire situation, sorrounded by yaktur and ogres. I decided not to give up, used a lot of consumable, played smart and eventually survived killing all the first floor of vault but it was SO F* HARD. I don't think I'll survive to V2.
What am I doing wrong? Where are my mistake? Or simply this poor Draconian is too weak to survive to the harsh of the Dungeon?

I've found a nice Daemon Blade +7 Vamp and Invis but I am afraid of losing the staff that is supporting my ice bolt. I'd become super hungry without it.
But I suppose I'm really doing (or I've done) something wrong.
Any help welcome.
Thanks!

Re: DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

You have 36 rations. Don't make decisions based on spell hunger until that number is 0.

Re: DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

The Vaults and Elf are actually harder than spider/swamp, Arachne and Aizul are tough, but not as tough as Saint Roka.

I would suggest you simply avoid the uniques you can't kill and go down to the next floor, you don't have to kill things that are too challenging, or that you don't have an easy solution for. You can probably clear spider and swamp leaning heavily on ice beasts and freezing cloud, conjurations are good for killing things quickly, but they aren't as MP efficient when you have to face lots of critters at once (this is particularly true of spider, where you'll face hoards of things for which using a direct damage conjuration is overkill) 3 ice beasts will do more damage than 2 bolts of cold, and 1 freezing cloud+some ice beasts will tear through just about anything you'll see in spider or swamp.

You also seem to have overtrained ice magic, comparitively speaking. If you'd stopped at like 15-16 ice magic and devoted that extra XP towards conjuration, summon, and air magic, you'd probably have a more robust set of spells, and sacrificed virtually nothing in terms of offensive power.

The staff of energy is generally not terrible, but it's not useful for you at all. As was pointed out above, spell hunger should not be the driver of your decisions, I'd wield the staff of cold all the time (it does decent damage with a little evocation) or keep the demon blade in hand all the time (demon blades are pretty good, it's better to whack things with a demon blade than use freeze at this point in the game, you can probably amnesia it if you need the slot) Energy is sometimes useful for a channeling device, except that you're with sif, who is way better at providing mana than the staff, so I'd seriously just drop it, and pick between the better no-mp offense and healing that goes with the demon blade, or the better spellpower that goes with the staff of cold. (I'd personally probably go with the demon blade)

Elf is a trap, its' dangerous, and the rewards are rarely worth your time once you can clear it with little risk (there are a few exceptions where you can clear it especially easily, but you don't fit into any of those categories)

If you *really* feel like you can't tackle spider/swamp yet, make sure you've explored all of the dungeon. Some people do a couple levels of the depths before they head into the vaults, personally I think the Depths are more dangerous than the vaults, but it's a close thing.

If you are serious, it is a bad advice. Having 1 ration means player should have been training and using a weapon long time ago

In this case 'don't make decisions based on spell hunger' means 'yes, train long blades and use that vampiric long sword', LOL.

Re: DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

Hi guys,

as always thanks a lot to all of you.
Yes, I have this thing with hunger. I've always had (despite my noobness, I'm playing DCSS since 0.6 :-|). I am one of those who take Kiku with Troll because "you never know I might run out of food when I am in Zot". Said that yes, I have to use those rations :)
And I'll train the damn daemon blade.
And I'll use the ice beast/freezing cloud combination :)
Thanks again, things looks a lot more clear now.
I'll update this once I have obtained YASD :-D

Maybe we are misunderstanding each other. My point is "don't make decisions based on spell hunger until 0 rations" can result in player spamming level 9 spell and then he/she starts making decisions based on spell hunger with 0 rations left but alas, it is too late and he/she dies with zero skill in weapons, using UC of course :)

I don't think Elf is a trap for experienced players who do it after Vaults or even Depths especially when you can ignore Elf 3 if you really want.

I think by "trap" they mean that you find it in Orc, so you can enter it way before you can enter Vaults or advised to enter Depths, not speaking about clearing them. So an unspoiled and inexperienced player may think that it is easier than those.

In other words I do not think that "trap" means that it's hard to clear, but that its danger level is not easy to judge.

In this case Depths and all 5 Lair branches are traps too. Elf at least gives you a great reward on last floor and can have shops on first 2.

Re: DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

They are somewhat traps. But the difference is the biggest in the case of Elf (and maybe Depths, but at least the name may suggest that it is hard? I do not now). Ok, maybe Slime is a trap also.

Re: YASD - DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

A character with a source of invisibility, the silence spell, and the ability to deal moderate physical damage kills everything in elf.

With just invisibility a character can comfortably raid the hall of blades.

Re: YASD - DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

At risk of getting slightly carried away about Elf talk but... Oh heck, let's. 8-)

I agree that it's not easy for a new player to understand when to do Elf or not. I definitely agree that it isn't as easy as the placement within Orc might suggest (you rarely want to go in immediately after finishing Orc - I can only think of once or twice I've consciously come to that point, after understanding all that's in there).

Elf has: Lots of casters with varied magic abilities (blink invisibility, various bolt and cloud spells, haste...), some of whom can hit you really hard - possibly with high level spells - if you don't imagine what they can do, or have come along without many relevant preparations. It also throws some enemies that are resistant to more of the usual "out of the box" attacks like elemental damage -- Elves may summon their own elementals which are very powerful, and there are lots of flying weapons that sooner or later, you run into one with a brand you really don't want to meet too early. All before (well, usually before) some random super caster manages to fire off the Lehudib's Crystal Spear for some insane damage, or a demon summoner pops a smiting or tormenting fiend of one or another major variety to pound you from a distance. There are also a few elves who are more combat specialists, archers and swords types akin to the orc specialists you see earlier (but sneakier - faster - more magical too). Finally, a few may test your MR by trying to cast you away into the Abyss, which is often lethal for earlier characters.

Elf is vulnerable to: Pretty much anything I call "anti-personnel." If it can kill or disable a squishy humanoid consistently and preferably at a distance, bring it and keep launching it before they get to cast much. For example: Mystic Blast, Fulminant Prism, Mephitic Cloud, Silence (versus casters), Lee's Rapid Deconstruction are a few lowish level spells that can do wonders at moderate power if properly deployed. Any serious anti-magic weapon can help. A really strong (probably early on, very well-geared) archer type of character can pick off many of the elves before they get many turns to attack. Anyway, you'll generally need to be able to do some fighting at range, or at least suppress some of the elves before they can close -- and don't forget to plan and watch out for those things above that aren't squishy elves.

Basically, I go to Elf early if I can kill humanoids fairly reliably and have at least some hope of fighting hard targets, but other paths around the dungeon are also looking very difficult. If I've cleared the main Dungeon as far as I dare (around D:13-15), finished Lair and Orc, and yet I don't have poison resistance and the Lair branches are Snake and Spider (strong denizens with poison all over), but I'm holding offense that is fast and hits fairly hard or some good AOE, I might think about Elf early. A few elves will have poison, but it won't be as frequent as those branches and the elves may also die faster to a strong AOE or fast weapon attack.

Invisibility isn't a panacea anywhere. It has a good chance of succeeding if you can attack fast enough, but most elves are smart enough to know generally where you are and a large group can box you in (or at least force you to spend a blink or teleport scroll). If you aren't well armed, eventually some will hit. A few will also be carrying equipment with various interesting brands and egos, including the occasional Sinv.

Re: YASD - DrIE ^Sif - why so F* hard?

Latest version of Depths is harder than Elf, in my opinion.
If you are really careful and you have decent survivability in melee (for dancing weapons), you can manage it.
Just beware of banishment to Abyss... engage 1-2 enemies at once, and teleport away when things get hard.
Won: SpHu Slinger of Okawaru (3 runes) - DsGl Unarmed of Makhleb (3 runes) - TrFi Unarmed of Nem (3 runes) - GnFE of Ash (3 runes) - DsGl Unarmed (with Statue and Shatter) of Chei (15 runes!!!).
Demonspawn rocks. Unarmed also.
