Been playing for awhile and have a couple 3 wins under my belt and gotten 4 or 5 runes (without getting out) a few times as well. Trying to learn octopode now and have a couple of questions about progression.

First off I didn't even know this was possible, but to my knowledge i had only trained maces, and Oka gave me "the +10 quick blade "Zueh" {vamp, rN++ MR++} (Okawaru gifted it to you on level 5 of the Lair of Beasts)" i know quickblades are only 8 to train to min-delay and i have since started training it, should i just abandon training that? is it worth switching to quickblades?

Also from what i've seen of octopode fighters i should be looking be looking for statue form if i want to go past 3 runes, i grabbed an earth skill early so i could start training earth magic in preparation but i'm not sure if that was a mistake or not. is it worth pre-training for skills you know you want to take? what other spell schools and spells should i be looking for for utility? I think i remember regeneration being a taken a lot and maybe something like repel missles and passwall?

Any other advice or things i'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: CIP OpFi of Oka

God gifts can be for a non-trained skill category, you are more *likely* to get a weapon from a trained skill over an untrained (or less-trained) one, but it's absolutely possible (The chances of getting an untrained weapon over a trained one for acquirement are even smaller, but it's possible there as well)

Re: CIP OpFi of Oka

(Please train stealth it's one of an Op's primary strengths.)

I wouldn't start training earth/transmutations before you've even found statue form, you may not even find that spell at all. And, even if you found it, it can be a bad idea to immediately pump earth/transmutations because you're neglecting your other skills. I would only get statue form when I've got an abundance of exp in the game, and my core skills are adequate, so somewhere in Vaults or beyond.

I've gotten quite a few decent octopodes killed because they found statue form, and they trained earth/transmutations to the detriment of their other more useful skills. Don't fall into that trap, Octopodes are nowhere near as weak/fragile as you think that they can't survive without needing transmutations.

Here's an example of a melee octopode of mine that didn't use statue form, or any transmutations at all(He had spells but he only learned them in the lategame.):

Melee octopodes with a shield are pretty survivable with good tactics. Pump Stealth + Dodging + Fighting + weapon skill and ALWAYS try and get into 1v1 situations with enemies. You can be a little more fragile than most melee guys, but you can generally pick and choose your battles more with Op's godlike +4 stealth.

I usually go for short blades on octopodes and then transition to long blades later on (Octopode massive stealth apt means you can stab a lot of dudes, even without using hexes or trying to sneak up on guys)

Good spells to have:
Blink
Passage of Golubria
Sticks to snakes
Ozocubu's armour
Any good summoning school spell (Ice beasts, lightning spire, shadow creatures, XXX, monstrous menagerie, Malign Gateway, Dragon's Call)
Statue form (Only if your core skills are trained properly.)
16/26 on the way to GreaterOctopode (Win all backgrounds as an Octopode)

Thanks for the response! I sadly ended up losing that character to one of the purple stone cows that i didn't notice until it was already too late, guess that's what i get for playing late at night!

I'll have to give your responses some thought and apply them to my future octopode games.

You say you often go short blades for stabbing early, since fighter doesn't get short blades as an option what class do you normally start as? or do you just pick up the first dagger you see and go from there?

Fi can start with a long sword, which crosstrains Short Blades, and pick up a dagger.

IIRC fighter gets rapier as an option, which is a shortblade. In my winning game, I used a rapier of freezing for pretty much the whole game up until my 3rd rune.

On backgrounds that don't get short blades, train stealth/fighting/dodging as your starting skills until you can get a dagger. Octopode constriction damage is good enough that starting weapon type/skill doesn't matter too much.

Huh, TIL...

I never even bothered looking into it since i would never have though of a rapier as a short sword.

Thanks!

Re: CIP OpFi of Oka

OpFi can win 15 runes without ever using weapons or transmutations:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=22831&p=305335&hilit=opfi#p305335

That was on old Tomb though, but I think new tomb is probably doable as Zin. That guy was Oka for 3 runes then Zin.

Transmutations is certainly easier though. Both Dragon Form and Statue form (or both) are doable. Obviously Statue Form has certain key advantages in a place like Tomb, but overall I have gravitated away from statue form to the opinion that Dragon form is actually somewhat superior. However I would say in 15 rune there is little reason not to have both. Of course if you are going weapon then you are kinda limited to SF, which is fine, but probably sub-optimal.

Personally if I plan to go transmutations I always do UC pode. UC pode is fine for OkaPode, finesse works quite well with UC but weapon Oka has obvious high points.

In general once you get UC statue form on line with a decent shield then you just need to be careful. You usually die because you think you are tougher than you are. While you suddenly go to hitting very hard and having good defense, you don't get truly stellar defense until later on with some good equipment and skills nice and high (like 20 dodge and 15 shield). So it is easy to think you are doing well in a place like shoals and then get overwhlemed and your statue form slowness creeps up on and you die. This is the main advantage of Dragon form, while it does hit harder than SF, the main thing is it attacks faster so you clear things out faster and move faster so you tend to get overwhelmed less often. When SF is fully mature you can be fine completely surrounded as long as there isn't some really nasty thing with that group (bad pan lord, OOFs etc).

Stealth is a valid choice on Op and I always train some on Op, eventually. However specifically on OpFi I do not always prioritize it early. Some people will say this is sacrilige but since I have 15 runed multiple Op and won branchless Hellcrawl Op I am pretty comfortable with it. Basically in a nuthsell certain types of Op are actually easier than most species early on, so rushing certain skills instead of stealth is perfectly valid, however you do want stealth to get around certain things that will cause you problems. So as an example you should strive to have some amount of stealth say 3+ to 4+ or 5+ by lair explicitly so that you can spot a hydra before it spots you and run away. But training stealth on d1 or d2 as an OpFi since you have a shield is in no way necessary and I would go so far as to say potentially detrimental. An OpFi has actually decent defense due to shield and more damage in melee than most species in the context of d1-2, I personally like to rush as much offense with some defense as possible on an OpFi, once I hit certain points I feel comfortable that I can kill an ogre with minimal risk. At that point around d6 or so I will maybe train stealth. Since Op apt is +4 you can just focus all xp on stealth for a level or two and get where you need to get. This is of course completely different on other starts. Some mage starts need no stealth and should rush certain spells or starts very much benefit from stealth (anything with very little defense help). Stealth is great for giving you the ability to choose the battleground, but its also inconsistent even at very high levels.

My personal recommendation on a OpFi that will do transmutations is to train UC to 9-10 above everything else and then fighting to 8 or so. Then train a defense skill (probably shield to lessen attack penalty). Then the other depends on what you get, book with an important spell train that and shield, a dex ring train dodge, a useful wand train evo, nothing special train dodge/fighting. Possibly train throwing as Oka. Most people will not agree with this reccomendation.
