YAVP: HaFi^Usk (15 runes)
This was a fun game! Neither my easiest nor my hardest victory, though it is my first Uskayaw win and first 15-runer with a Halfling (all the others so far had to stop around 12).
The reason I decided to share this win is because I wanted to talk about how fun Uskayaw is. Theoretically, he doesn't sound like a great god, since he requires you to fight big crowds and punishes extensive luring and 1v1s, i.e. 'safe play' (since you won't be able to rack up the piety too well that way). So, at best he'd be fixing the problems he created. In practice, I found that he's much better than theory would suggest - especially for a relatively impatient player like me - and it's also great fun setting up the 'dances', trying to maximize the piety you get so you can unleash some Grand Finales at a good target. There was great synergy between my axefighting up close (which, through cleaving, allowed me to accumulate piety quite well in any fight against multiple opponents), and my - optionally Portal Projectile-boosted - tomahawk throwing: I found that I often benefited from moving through a level after I finished off a small monster pack, and alternating between throwing a tomahawk and shouting to draw more opponents and stop my piety from dropping too fast at the same time.
Having a faith amulet really helps with that strategy too. For a long time I was torn between a faith amulet and other amulets that offered Regen or resists. It was in extended that I ended up finding the amulet I was wearing at the end, which I just had to use! Other nice finds were a very early war axe of electrocution that was to be my main weapon for the rest of the game, several rings with nice slaying bonuses, and a set of golden dragon scales in Shoals. The boots were nice to buy early on as well.
Uskayaw is really a good fit for extended. I wonder if Usk would even be a good choice for ziggurats. Or at least the first one or two. Didn't want to try with this character - except that I did end up doing about 10 levels of a ziggurat because near the middle of my extended campaign, I had run out of consumables, and thought that was the least risky way to get some more blinking and heal wounds scrolls. (I had been suffering against Brimstone Fiends the most. It took me shamefully long to realize that things like an antimagic war axe or my needles - that I had meant to use much more than I actually did - were there as options even when I didn't have Grand Finale access. That's one of my weaknesses in this game - when I have more than 2-3 different options to kill things, I tend to forget about at least one for awfully long periods of time.) I did end up killing several of the bosses in Pan and Hell with Grand Finale, also using some needles of confusion when that wasn't available. Dis was the hardest Hell branch, while Tartarus - often a big challenge for my characters - was one of the easiest for this one. Gloorx ended up almost killing me due to my carelessness, and I got away barely - then, in Cerebov's realm, I almost died to Gloorx again when I got a bit greedy: I was close to getting 5* and wanted to stay in a fight against him and some random monsters around, but got down to ~27 HP by the time I finally managed to get that fifth star. I did have some careless moments in this game, but thankfully, few enough that I wasn't punished for them.
Tomb was also a blast. Slightly dangerous and I got close to death a few times, but Grand Finale allowed me to essentially "controlled blink" away when in danger. That's why Usk is such a good fit in extended - the high density of trash monsters allows not just easy piety accumulation, but also easy repositioning with Grand Finale.
Ended up finding the Shield of Resistance in Tomb:3, which I used for Zot:5 only against the OOFs (used a shield of reflection for the rest of the game). Of course, it was an ancient lich and its crystal spear that ended up being the most dangerous on Zot:5 - though luckily I had decided not to finish the game last night, so I was awake enough to figure out a simple way to escape with Line Pass and reset the fight. The orb run and Zot:5 ended up being more threatening than much of extended as I got several torment-happy Pan lords on the way up, though a well-placed scroll of summoning got me out of the stickiest situation.
And that was it for me! Uskayaw with a Faith amulet, top tier. Though I wonder, is there any reason to use Stomp if you are using axes? I don't know if it deals slightly more or slightly less damage than an axe cleave, but when Stomp reduces piety and axes increase it, I just see no reason why to ever Stomp when I could swing an axe.
