I think by skill they mean player skill, not that choosing character skills is a major design goal. And there's still plenty of meaningful decisions to be made besides skill training - in fact some new decisions are opened up due to even skill training - such as immediately switching weapons or learning a very diverse set of magic spells.

While I agree with your point, I'm not sure the logical argument really works here. Imagine a very good player did win their first ever gnoll game; that doesn't mean gnoll is badly designed, it just means the player is very good, very lucky, or both.

For example, I won the first ever Qaz game I played, but I don't consider the god overpowered. It's a strong god, and I was lucky to get through the early game reasonably easily. I don't have anywhere near a 100% winrate with Qaz, I just won my first game.

Gnoll is overall a strong race, but they aren't in the top 3, and are probably in a fine place overall.

There is a problem with your argument, not mine. Any lost game proves species is not too powerful because it is still possible to die, any won game proves species is not too weak because it is still possible to win.

Thanks Sprucery.

When novice players ask for advice, most people will say don't train two weapon skills or don't train two magic schools at the same time. And gnoll is just opposite of that. That was my thought.
