Ridiculously good weapon on D4...Doom must be coming

So, been trying to get back into the game, running Gnolls because I like the versatility and late-game tactics. Wasn't getting far, usually do to me just being distracted...or a stupidly persistent ghost.

On this run, playing a Gnoll Monk. Started out with a Falchion, planning to play with Cheib most likely (Gnoll of Cheib gives ridiculous casting and melee potency, with Cheib's usual downsides, ofc). Then I found the Zephyr bow...on D4.

Just realized I've never played a ranged-primary character (done ranged support before, but not primary). Burning through the levels and realized I need to decide on a god. I'm not sure which one to do, because Oka for ammunition and weapons, but with something so good Ashen seemed like a real possibility (just went in the temple, so not all gods shown on this dump) as well as Dith.

Input on that choice would be useful on this Advice thread!

Re: Ridiculously good weapon on D4...Doom must be coming

Doom came in the form of a Death Knight + amulet of Reflection paired up with a Basilisk on D7. Had he not had that amulet I would have won...and had that Basilisk not been there, I would have won. Oh well. Got another good run going, at least.

Re: Ridiculously good weapon on D4...Doom must be coming

Sorry to hear. In that character dump, you had 9 scrolls of identify and a lot of unidentified potions and scrolls. Also an unidentified ring, enchanted leather armour and a scroll of remove curse. I hope you had that stuff identified.

Did you get petrified by the basilisk? If you still had a teleport scroll, that might have saved you.

Re: Ridiculously good weapon on D4...Doom must be coming

When you have a stack of 2+ unknown scrolls, read-id them. Together with scrolls of identify you would have all your scrolls/potions known, that included 3 potions of haste and scroll of blinking, quite useful in any fight.

Re: Ridiculously good weapon on D4...Doom must be coming

Everything I had of purport was ID'd by the end. Yeah, the Basilisk petrified me. I was at about 40 HP and only needed to land one more shot to kill the Death Knight. Then I get turned to stone, and they pummel me to death. Ran low on heal potions that game, too, so that didn't help.

How do you think I wrote those numbers in my previous post?

Also another unasked advice from me. Stop playing "one more hit and it will die" mini-game, that's not good thinking for roguelikes because there will be many situations which will "prompt" you to do it and then it takes just a single "bad luck" accident and the game is over. Just escape earlier and then try again (if you really want to).

1) Must have gotten things crossed, though I had them identified.

2) Also, advice heeded. I've been doing another run and playing things much more conservatively (when possible).

Outgrowing this was a recent development for me and it has helped a great deal.
