Tasonir's .21 tournament writeup!

Wanted to get a quick win with a "common" combo before that combo sunk down in points. I'm really not a fan of actually playing MiBe so I went with CeHu of okawaru. Interestingly this combo isn't as popular as I expected it to be - I locked it in at 55 centaur points and 25 hunter points. By the end of the tournament centaur was worth 60 and hunter 23, so I actually came in slightly worse than the final score. I did however gain on Okawaru, who I got 39 points for, and was eventually worth 10 points by tournament end.

When that was done I looked over the race values, and lo and behold one of my favorite races was tied for the highest possible value: Octopode! The other race was felid. It started somewhere around 250 points when I started playing them, but I splatted the first few and no one one them at the time, so their value climbed higher as I drove my winrate down. The one that eventually stuck was worth an even 300 points for
being an octopode alone. Yermak (our resident tournament winner) managed to snag 306 points for his. I'm fairly sure he's checking for people to be close to wins with each high value species, and then creates one at the high point just before they get won, and then plays through the created characters. That, or he just had some really great timing finishing his runs, as he had 4 species which gave over 300 points. Anyways, here was my octopode:

Was very powerful, had 3 good rings of protection (+6, +4, +4) and then a few decent resist rings to round out offense and defense. Found all the spells I wanted except for controlled blink, but that's not really terribly essential in any case. Managed to miss out on both the Politician banner (previous win was <10m) and get beaten for high score by bhh, who win in approx 6000 fewer turns. Neither this nor my next 15 rune win were really trying to be speed runs, and so won with good-but-not-really-fast scores of 70k and 60k turns. I generally play quick (in terms of turncount) and use things like regeneration and chei in most of my games, but I wasn't specifically diving or manually exploring, so it isn't too surprising to not have the combo highscore.

The highest scoring combo in the game (currently) and a true powerhouse: VsMo^Chei. Wanted to get at least 2 15 rune wins, and so I did basically the same thing as the OpFi game, just with a vine stalker this time. While I didn't escape while in statue form, I'm pretty sure this character had quite a few more AC points than average due to having a robe of archmagi as well as a whopping 50 int. This may be one of the best amulets I've ever found: amulet of Dekhliysh {Regen+ Int+8 SInv}, especially for only 3 properties. I don't think I had any Sinv prior to this, or maybe that was the octopode game...It's a bit of a blur. In any case, regen and int are two of my favorite things.

Both of the 15 rune games had trouble with mutations - once you get up to 6-10 mutations in extended, it's very inefficient to remove them with potions of mutation, since it's adding some back on each time. While they do tend to shift towards good mutations, it's quite hard to get down to having only 1-3 mutations. Both characters had decent stacks of potions (something like 8) but ended up staying heavily mutated. Berserk was a possibly game ending risk if I went berserk while statue form was ending, but with careful play it's possible to make sure you have a high duration left on statue form so that it will always outlast any berserks that trigger. Still, it was always a concern and I had no way to cure the mutation.

One interesting and new thing I decided to do on the VSMo was nature's ally 3 banner: Get the golden rune after picking up the orb before entering tomb for the first time. With Cheibriados. This may have been a foolish mistake, and there were definitely a few times I got critically injured, but I did pull it off. I shattered my way through tomb 1/2 to save some turns, although they aren't really difficult areas in general. The hard part of tomb is always the entrance to tomb:3, and that remained quite difficult. I was a bit afraid of trying to shatter the whole floor so I went with teleports, some of which backfired and landed me just on the other side of the huge swarm that was already killing me, but with all of my regeneration and roughly 50AC/50EV, I managed to last until a second teleport took me to a relatively quiet area of the floor, and then cleaned up everything a bit at a time. I'm not sure I'd recommend this challenge to other Chei worshippers who can't Cblink due to the orb. Those teleports are quite slow. Nevertheless, it is possible.

And then, some splats:

Overall, my motivation to log a lot of time this tournament was somewhat lower than the past, so I didn't quite make my usual 4-5 win goal. I did fire up a BaTM because it was a nemelex combo, and was more than powerful enough to cruise to an easy win, when I decided why not go ahead and plunder a loot vault with an orange crystal statue in it:

It turns out that even if you have incredible physical strength, wearing only a single ring of magic resistance while walking (slowly) towards an orange crystal statue is a death sentence. This is something I knew, but it's been so very, very long since it's last happened to me, that I didn't pause long enough to check my MR before going in. Really should have known. Was a bit deflated after such a simple mistake, and the BaTM combo had gotten up to around 4 or 5 already won, so I didn't make another attempt at getting a nemelex combo.

Honorable mentions: A couple of low level trolls! Usually after a win, I'd fire up some troll combo, and try to go for a streak. Usually died to some careless fight quite early on. One I remember being completely surprised by was a troll at full health and having already leveled a few times, dying to two adders. You'd really think a troll could cut through a few, but if you keep getting terrible rolls over and over again, it is possible to lose...

That morgue: http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Tason ... 080541.txt

Level 3 troll with 7 ac, and adders only hit for 5...I wonder how much of the final damage I took was poison vs physical, but ah well. I wasn't all that heavily poisoned, and they had to cut through 51 hp, but they did. In fairness I only had 2.9 UC because I started as a necromancer background, but that isn't a big deal compared to all of the innate troll advantages. That and the 0 fighting skill might have made my accuracy a problem - I certainly did miss the adders a lot.

I did it with TrMo^Chei at the 0.19 tournament, and it was quite exciting (good way to break boredom).
My routine for Tomb:3 is stairdancing with some immo scrolls. Did it same for nature's ally banner, even I had Orb and all dudes that were jumping on me during the orb-run.

Stairdancing is no longer possible. I am really impessed by that banner in late versions. I got golden rune twice in later versions and both times it was extremely hard despite it was not during orb run and I was GrFi/MiFi of TSO in GDS.

Re: Tasonir's .21 tournament writeup!

Yeah the lack of being able to just go back up the stairs immediately is what makes tomb:3 so deadly. It's hard for everyone, but then fast characters (anyone with haste, or less ideally, just running at 10 speed) can run to the up escape hatch. For Chei characters you probably want to have a controlled blink for each time you go down so you can jump to the up escape hatch more quickly. If you have the spell, I'd even use two blinks to go there immediately.

With the orb you can't have controlled blinks, and teleports are really slow. There's basically no guaranteed safe way to overcome this - it's always going to be risky. I did get a very bad teleport on my first try, but through luck and sheer stats I had enough time to get the second teleport to kick in, and that one put me further away from the swarm. Once you're out of the entrance area and only have to deal with the "normal" amount of things approaching you, it's fairly easy. I should probably look up the fooTV thing and watch my foolish tomb:3 run again :)

edit: !lm tasonir vs br.end=tomb -tv will get the tv, but it ends too early. need to adjust it to play further, but for some reason I'm getting timeouts on http://termcast.develz.org/ and can't actually see it myself. Boo. Will try to improve the query and actually verify it myself when I get home.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
