(CiP) Harold the Gladiator Ghoul

After messing around with a Ghoul Monk, I decided to make a more serious attempt with a Ghoul Gladiator. (He should really be named Harold II, but I didn't type in the Roman numeral while generating the character.)

The first floor was simple. Eating meat dealt with any minor damage Harold took, and he even found an Okawaru altar!. Okawaru is still the standard non-Trog melee god, right?

Harold II identified Potions of Lignification and Potions of Curing. Unfortunately, there was no Remove Curse scroll for testing out the two rings.

UPDATE: Harold II cleared the 2nd floor, which had more open spaces than he would have liked. He isn't a Summoner! :P Melee characters want claustrophobic corridors.

He found a Book of Cantrips, which I'm not sure what to do with. Harold II wouldn't burn it like a Trog follower, but at the same time, are these spells worth skill point investment?

I don't want to make him chug random potions for fear of Degeneration or a bad mutation.

Ghouls can't mutate, so potions of mutation give stat rot instead. Those and degeneration aren't too bad except Ghouls' Int sucks...

Unarmed, Fighting, and Armour are your core skills. Okawaru is great for Ghouls. Keep upgrading to heavier armour as you find it.

Bucklers are generally considered bad on melee characters because you loose the off-hand attack for a pretty minor increase in defense. I like shields generally, and with just leather armour it might be a decent idea to keep the buckler.

Eventually train some Dodging, but your Dex is going to suck, so don't spend too much XP here. Eventually train one of Evocations or a ranged weapon. Ignore spells because you Int and apts suck, and you want to be in heavy armour.

For Okawaru, train Invocations to 2 when you get * piety and then 6–10 when you get *****. (I like 10 for 1% fail on Finesse and long duration on both Heroism and Finesse, but it's overkill.). Use Heroism at the beginning of every non-trivial fight: the piety cost is minimal. Use Finesse + Heroism at the beginning of every tough fight: the piety cost of Finesse is large enough that you can't use it all the time.

Chop up every corpse. (There's an init file option to autobutcher.) Eat chunks between fights when low on HP. (Don't eat in battle: it doesn't heal fast enough there.)

Stats are Ghouls' only real weakness. Very late: stat 0 sucks. Carry Int+ ring or amulet in Abyss, Zot, Tomb, Pan, & Hells if your Int is low, which it almost surely will be. See goes for Dex, but that should be higher. Try to kill fast or block line of sight to malmutators, but be aware that those corrupting orb things in Abyss and demonspawn corruptors in Pan don't need LOS.

Harold shambled through floors 3-5. He found a much-needed ring mail and +2 helmet. A Scarf of Resistance was pretty nice too, but that was toward the end of this play session, so it hasn't seen much use yet. Really, I'm beginning to think I should have started as a Fighter instead of a Gladiator. Don't they get heavy armor from the start?

I put my points into Dexterity. Isn't that the way it usually goes for melee types? Or has Strength become more useful in this version?

Okawaru's Heroism helped for fights where I autoexplored into what turned out to be a group of enemies. Gnolls gave Harold a hard time on D:3 or so. Potions and Teleport scrolls helped him survive.

I hear that many players have problems with training Throwing because Okawaru keeps giving them Javelins or something like that instead of new melee weapons. Then again, Harold doesn't have any Evocations items except for the Polymorph wand. And that sounds a little risky.

Playing in short sessions seems to be the way to go for roguelikes. Usually when I die, it's because I play for too long and stop paying close attention.

Sadly, Harold II died to a two-headed ogre. I thought I could take it on with Heroism and a Haste potion, but this is what you get when you think that Okawaru is "Trog lite". Should have teleported away with my scroll. Next time, I'll probably use a sturdier melee race than a Ghoul.
