There were no monsters in sight!


I figured since I had never done new zot or the run through hell with the orb, I might as well pick a really powerful character. This run was very helpful and gave me statue form pretty early and I rushed to get it castable, abandoning the EE playstyle pretty quickly. I think I was able to (barely) cast it as early as d:10 or 11 if I recall, and from then on it was pretty smooth sailing. I picked up regeneration a short time later and kept them on all game. Most of the new zot characters seemed weak to me but I think that's just a factor of picking a very overpowered character - I went through Pan/Hell with around 50ac/50ev, and so aside from the occassional repeated torment/hellfire engagements, nothing else really hurt me very much.

Hellcrawl feature feedback:
The lack of upstairs and the overall shorter game (and thus less experience) make hellcrawl significantly harder, but it's certainly still fair and winnable. I really appreciated a lot of the QOL improvements: lack of food, identification, perm charms, etc. Perm charms might be a bit too strong as it is, but I think that the "perm" part is a huge gain, and they could be nerfed numerically without hurting the design. Part of this is also that as a transmuter, you typically don't need your full mana pool, so the reserved mana doesn't really hurt much. It'd be a much bigger impact to someone who used mana for their primary damage. Maybe transmuters could stand the buff, as they're typically very exp intensive, and exp is in short supply, although once you do make it over the 'hump' into the midgame, you feel really, really strong.

PS: My win in 32727 turns has a pair of 27's in it, and is currently the high score on LLD. Played in normal mode. Go beat it, someone :)

What's the branch order for branchless? I'm not really that familiar with the branch options at the end of each area in hellcrawl yet. Dungeon, lair subbranch, vaults, depths, zot, hell?

Is not taking chei to make it more difficult? For a really low exp/turncount game I'd probably fall back on VSMo^Chei, one of the most busted combos out there. Branch order wouldn't impact this - you can get statue form castable while still in main dungeon, so no matter where you go from there, you already have statue form going. This is of course subject to actually finding it and also focusing exp into it - if you start melee you might need a little bit more time to get it going as well. The above OpEE had statue form online around D:10. A melee start might take up until around d:14 or d:15, but should still have it in time for the next branch. Again, this assumes you find the spell early, but given that you can retry whenever you don't, that should be doable.

My understanding of hellcrawl is that you reach the end of dungeon and then have 2 options for the next branch: orc, or vaults. Those are both branches*. If there's a way to go from dungeon -> win please let me know. I've only done one win and I picked branches that seemed "earlier" to me as I was trying to get all 9 runes. Do I just pick "later" branches to do branchless?

*There really isn't such a thing as a "branch" in hellcrawl as it's all one direction. You can't go off to the side somewhere and come back. It is possible to be offered the same area twice which would make some paths a bit longer, I suppose (dungeon > orc > vaults vs dungeon > vaults), but there isn't anything that I would say is an actual "branch".

Dude it's called branchless. "Branch" meaning "branch", and "less" meaning "no branches". There's not a branch order for branchless, for the same reason your wireless mouse doesn't have a wire diameter.

There's no such thing as hellcrawl branchless. severen was telling you to play DCSS branchless, which I suppose is arguably harder than hellcrawl (it would definitely be hard with chei). It also requires going back quite a few versions to before Depths was added; the more modern equivalent is DUHZ (Dungeon, Depths, Hells, Zot).

edit: upon further reflection, severen's post may be stupider than the question.

Talking about Octopodes, does anyone here know whether they have a higher damage output with blade hands, because of slashing around with 8 of them? I can't find anything on that anywhere, and I swear I was looking around for at least eight minutes! Is it even advisable to use bland hands with an Op, compared to other starting book transformations?

Higher than what?

Yes, an Op does more damage with blade hands than an Op without (At least in any sane circumstance) and an Op does more damage than say, a human, if both are with or without blade hands (because Op get bonus damage that humans do not)

If you are asking "Do Op get more bonus damage from casting blade hands than other non-Octopodes do, because they have 'more blades' or something" then no, they don't.

I understand the frustration and confusion, as like you said, "branchless" in the literal sense isn't really a thing anymore with depths. But wouldn't even the older, pre-depths version involve dungeon -> hell/pan (portals, not a branch) -> Zot (which is a branch?) . They'd more properly be called "no branches until Zot"?

In any case, the answer I was looking for was just DUHZ (for main crawl) and DUZH (for hellcrawl). I might have to bring out the big guns (VSMo) for hellcrawl branchless, although I'm not sure if/when I'll make a serious stab at it.
