CIP TeAE - looking for religious advice

I just completed Dungeon level 7 with a Tengu Air Elementalist. I'm playing online so I'm unsure how to post a character dump from there. I have 12 Conj, 10 AE and around 4-5 in Fighting, Staves/Pole-Arms, Dodging, Shields and Evocations. I just found a staff of air and a +9 plate armour of ponderousness which has me seriously considering if switching to Chei (from Ash) would be worthwhile. Only other meaningful gear is a +2 (rElec Regen+ Slay+2) robe and an MR ring. As this character is the most promising I've had a TeAE at DL:7 so far, I would appreciate some help with the decision to switch gods.

The time to think about gods is BEFORE you pick a god. For the vast majority of characters, switching gods is a bad idea. In this particular case, it is a really, really horrible idea. That plate would kill your spells, leaving you with nothing.

Re: CIP TeAE - looking for religious advice

Thanks @Magipi. I wasn't sure how much Chei stats would end up offsetting the plate armour. I just thought the game was trying to tell me something by giving me a Chei-less temple. Then suddenly +9 plate, staff of Air and Chei right afterwards. I may be slightly superstitious when playing DCSS (blame Xom).

Chei will take a long time to get enough piety that your stats improve markedly. Until then, you're just slow.

The file at the link gets overwritten by new developments. In the future, copy paste from that page into "Code" tags here, so that everyone is looking at the same chardump.

Re: CIP TeAE - looking for religious advice

Some god transitions are safer than others, but generally speaking you don't want to switch gods until your character is fairly high level, with a strong offense and solid defenses. I'd say most people (that do switch - it's overall rare) are doing it after 2 runes, or after 3 runes and before they go to extended. You don't want to take one god early and then switch to another god suddenly for lair.

The plate is tempting and could be good for the right character - someone who's set up for heavy armor melee. Ponderous is bad, and I know some players wouldn't touch it, but for an early +9 I think it's good for some characters, just not yours. It isn't a good idea for a mage to try to pick it up and immediately convert. You need 160 or more piety for the +15 stat bonus; +15 would offset a large amount of the penalty, but even then it isn't 100%. If I had to guess I'd say it would cover about 60% of it, but that's just based on vague memories and feelings. And 40% of the plate penalty is still a pretty large penalty.
