CIP HEAE Oops, I did it again

My starting AE book was starting to feel limiting once I got everything at high success rate, and I had a bunch of choices of weapons. The shortbow of freezing and the great sword of venom were working really well in Lair with the cold and poison vulnerable stuff, so I split the difference between Long Blades and Bows, stupidly putting myself into 3 killdudes skills. :(

Now I've got a jack of all trades master of none situation, and I'm savagely underpowered in Swamp -- forced to run, use consumables, or both, for every encounter. Worse, Lightning Bolt + Swamp + Fedhas is a terrible plant-and-piety-killing combo. I just recently found a Book of the Sky, and a book with Iron Shot, so reverting to Conjurations/Air for killdudes has become an option. Can this character be salvaged?

Which weapon are you using, which kill dudes skill are you focusing, and how do I avoid snap-dying when I get in melee range with a hydra?

As Swamp is hard right now, let's try the other branch first. Is it Snake or Spider?

I say a venom great sword is not a good weapon at this point. Let's try to rebrand it. We also have some other good options, namely the elec dagger and the staff of air (elec weapons are just amazing). However, the best weapon you have is the longbow. Bows are usually bad with allies (as those dumb dudes block our line of fire) but our allies are stationary. But it requires some more skill to be really good. Too many options, just as you said.

Well, as you have discovered, Fedhas and AE don't go too well together. I would say: ditch the mushrooms and concentrate on killing stuff with spells. The mushrooms have already done their job in getting you through Lair and Orc.

Why have you not learnt static discharge? Just don't use it if you have mushrooms or plants around you. You also have not learnt conjure ball lightning for the same reason. The latter is a great spell if you use it properly.

Snake is relatively easy for HEAE: if you keep your distance, you can kill everything with conjure ball lightning. Spider is a bit more tricky, because the monsters are fast: static discharge will help you if you are surrounded. A venom weapon would also help you in the latter case, but rebranding it is also ok.

Use your enchant armour scrolls. Your AC is very bad, and every point counts. No point in saving them for later.

You have a +5 longbow and fedhas. Ranged combat is even better than usual as you can fire behind a line of allies or water.

The other branch is Spider -- sorry for the aggressive snip that cut that out. That's why getting rPois is so important, but, unfortunately, problematic. The only sources in the game the swamp dragon scales, the +0 buckler of poison resistance, and a staff of poison. But the buckler is incompatible with the bows and the great sword, and the SDA wrecks my Deflect Missiles (but, to my surprise, did very little to my other spells).

On the plus side, since my last post I've gotten
1) a +3 rapier of electrocution, making losing access to my great sword less bad, and
2) a amulet {Reflect +Blink rElec SH+2}, making Static Discharge much more attractive

If I'm not mistaken you can cast deflect missiles in the Robe, then switch armors, provided you're in a safe location. It's only really an problem if you want to recast mid-fight. Also DMsl isn't super important until vaults (and isn't all that important there imo)

You don't need Deflect Missiles in Swamp or Spider.

I don't know why the amulet matters: you have a staff of air, which provides rElec and increases spellpower. You don't need rElec to use static discharge, though it helps.

You can use the bow or work with spells; it's up to you. Rapier of elec is a fine weapon as well.

In Spider, watch out for the demonic crawlers, which resist elec.

Spider has 2+ ghost moths that I couldn't seem to deal with despite some strong efforts, and I bailed on the branch before descending to the last level. I've re-emphasized my commitment to being an Air Elementalist getting enough memorization slots to cast all the spells that were mentioned in this thread, and committed to rapier {elec} with enchants up to +8, and wearing buckler rPois with Archmagi robe. I finished off D, S (ducking Mara to get the rune), and the first few levels of vaults.

Having staff of Air, ring of wizardry, and robe of archmagi sort of makes me want to learn Tornado, although I realize that's pretty ill-advised for a 3 rune.

I still am trying to figure out tactics for Conjure Ball Lightning. That spell is screwy, and they blow up in my face a lot.

Tornado is single school, and HE has +2 air aptitude, so it's not hard to get.

For using Conjure Ball Lightning, cast the spell with a monster near the edge of LOS and back away.

1) I still haven't really decided on a weapon. I thought I had settled on rapier of electrocution, and boosted it to +9, because it went with my buckler of rPois. But then I got a significantly improved amulet {Reflect rC++ Str+4 Int+4 SH+5}, which unfortunately loses me my rElec, and now I'm thinking I want to use staff of air (and level a 4th weapon skill?!?!?!). But then! -- I found a triple sword in hall of blades, and now I'm thinking I should go back to long blades, so I can make use of all the XP I blew on both 2-handed weapon skills. ARG! Indecision! (Oh, and there's Singing Sword, but I'm sure I can ditch that. I'm not Qazal.)

2) Still no see invis in this game, so I'm still avoiding Spider's multiple ghost moths. But I don't think I'm tough enough for V:5 or for E:3, so I'm kind of stuck.

3) Would you wear this {-Tele +Inv rN+ MR+ Str+3 Int+4} ring over MP+9, even though it costs you one turn to swap if you want to Blink or teleport? (PS, more than one turn, if you forget to swap, like I've already done... twice.)

Staff of Air gives +rElec.

You are putting way too much thought into weapon choice on a character with 16 str 31 int 16 dex and 117/28/5 defenses. Triple sword is bad, 2h weapons are bad. Use a buckler and take more advantage of that amazing reflect amulet.

Rapier with staff of air swap is natural, figure out a solve for the rElec mobs in the endgame. Don't train staves.

You are only wearing one ring for some reason.

Use +9 rapier of elec as main weapon and use staff of air as a swap when you need rElec.

You can probably kill ghost moths with the rapier, even without any MP. Use a scroll of fog if necessary to figure out where the monster is around you (it's usually not necessary). Btw, ghost moths can't see invis.

Vaults 5 is best done after Depths.

Also, you have see invis. Sunlight reveals.
