CIP VpSu Midgame evaluation

I'd like to make a post evaluating a character after D15, setting up for sbranches. Its a rather interesting character that will face a challenging branch soon.

1: Background
This character is rather powerful because I have one of the best gods in the game. I randomed altar'd wondering what hot garbage I was going to get on D2, pulled Makh, and expect to win simply because D2 Makh with a free pip of piety is game-breakingly strong. This is born out in the morgue:

Invocations can be used in bat form. The character has played like a centaur, abusing minor destruction as a ranged attack while maintaining a gap, with the option to summon demons as needed.

This isn't quite powerful enough, and I'll drop out of bat form to dump my Magic pool into summons as needed. The two notable difficult encounters that I had significant trouble with were when I set up my summons on francis and then got flanked/barbed by a manticore. I immediately tele'd, the floor was mostly clear at that time. The other notable encounter was a double ugly thing pack, too much health and damage for me to deal with easilly, but not exactly threatening either. Its more of a benchmark for how powerful a full MP pool of summons and spells is. I had to reset the fight twice.

1.1: I'm approaching the tail end of usefulness of minor destruction. I'll still get value out of it in the next couple of branches, but the era of centaur-like bat kiting entire floors is basically over.

1.2 I have a lot of summons. I can alternate between MP based summons in caster form and HP based summons in or out of bat form.

2: Sbranches
Sbranches are swamp and spider. Swamp should be no problem, but spider is rather terrifying for my character. Spider specifically eats quick dodgy characters, which is what batform is. I basically have all of the XP in swamp to use to set up for spider.

2.1 Spider: Lets start with the trash encounter. Leaping spiders will web me beside redback packs who are fast. My current summons are unreliable meatshields at this point, and I have less time to deploy because enemies can close the gap more quickly as I summon. Being webbed is devastating in bat form. A single pack of leaping spiders and redbacks is troublesome but i expect to be able to overpower it with summons. A pack with adds is expected overpower my MP pool and start taxing my Makh piety.

2.1.1: Emperor scorps will punch through and ignore anything I summon except greater demons, where its about an even match depending on the demon and I can get an advantage with some tactics. If I'm using too much piety during lesser encounters it makes using greater demons for emperor scorps troublesome.

2.1.2: Ghost Moths are troublesome as always. Canine and greater demons are the only summons that see invis. My first thought is to wand them down.

2.1.3: I have an amulet of faith which will help a decent amount.

2.1.4: Greater demon is 22% hostile ATM.

2.1.5: I may have to leave spider partway in due to lack of blood. This is fine.

3: I'm not incredibly frail. I have a full kit of +2 aux armor, 10 fighting/dodge, and face an armor choice. +5 ring mail artifact ring mail with no useful properties for this particular character vs + 2 robe of Fire resistance (fire resistance not relevant in spider) with ozos.

3.1: This armor choice has some tactical considerations, if I'm approaching fights as bat it takes more time to drop out of bat and drop summons and the question of when to cast ozo's has a bit more pressure put on it.

4: Spells
4.0 Useful spells available: Summon Forest (54% currently with red drain, expected ~30% once i clean it), Shadow Creatures, Animate Dead. No Spells higher than level 5 of any kind have spawned save shadow creatures.

4.1 Spells I Want that will help in Spider: Invis, Simulacrum, Death Channel, Ozo's Refrigeration. Honorable mention to book of the warp, because it gives me extended and clarifies how to build for spider.

4.2 Spell Levels currently available: 1. Amnesia scrolls: 0.

5: I have no melee attack. I have vampiric bite, but I think that was a mistake. It is very difficult to justify spending 3 MP on bite vs dropping another summon. A ring of Power would make this spell more usable, I think. A +2 vamp dagger is available.

6: I have no rings. The two rings that have spawned have been Poison Resist and Tele. Garbage. Notable pickups are rings of power (or a staff!).

7: I just ID'd an acquirement scroll.

8 Path Forward: Aquire book, hoping for invis or book of the warp (haha that's not happening with 0 tloc). If I get any of the above Spells I Want in Spider spells I'll go that direction. Otherwise: Summon Forest will help out tremendously against spider trash. I don't really want to commit to Tloc and summon forest if tentacle hasn't spawned. Most of the XP in swamp will be put to spellcasting for the spell levels so I can learn it. After I get enough spell levels for a helpful spell I'll switch to invocations. More invocations = more greater demons, which should be enough for Spider. If I find invis i'll train shortblades instead of Invocations.

You're dead, too bad, but some tips for a later date:

As a vampire of Mak, you get a lot of benefit from going bloodless. You can chug some blood once in awhile if you fall behind in health, but ideally may not need to very much. In this scenario, I recommend pumping unarmed combat, fighting, evasion, invocations, and stealth. You noticed that after a certain point lesser destruction seems to fall off. This isn't really true because you can still use it to pepper stuff before you need to melee. Lesser destruction can also splash acid on targets. I don't recommend summons because it eats up XP and requires you to change out of batform to be useful, whereas unarmed combat and evasion are useful both in and out of batform. Once you find some very nice armour and get armour skill trained up a bit, and/or shields... and better gear in general, you can stop using batform as often besides an ocassional means of escape or flying over something.

The absolute best spell you can hope to find in this scenario is confusing touch. Pump STR.

VpSu is the only su I play, because it is so easy to play at bloodless and spell hunger doesn't matter. All other summoners are awful. I occasionally play other Vp, but not often.

I'm quite disinterested in going strength, I don't need a physical attack because resetting is basically free with bat form. I don't really want to trade in melee anyway. If I trade, there is a good chance I have to drink blood after the fight, and i'd rather be bloodless.

If i'm not trading in melee or firing a launcher, I don't have a lot of reason for strength.

Had I pulled a different God from the altar I may have justified a melee attack, probably short blades, maybe UC, but when I pull makh, there is no reason for me to commit to a melee attack for a long time. It guarantees me a late game caster, where robes may end up being the target armor regardless of my str.

I have had vampires (non su, maybe en?) find an early invis source and a vamp dagger who could not stay bloodless through lair. They were killing mobs too quickly, and passive bite procs were more than enough to keep up with any hunger. This kind of character would be way more interested in str, as it expects to have to trade in melee frequently.

My VpSu with no rings and no relevant artifacts and few books will never keep up with that broken character. It doesn't have to. All it needs is to be able to handle the threats in the next zone.

There isn't anything wrong with playing vampires differently, but i'm certainly not trying to set up a UC confusing touch str vampire when I start as a summoner. After you pull makhleb, you can build kinda just build into whatever you want, your makh, so much of your character is already solved.

Try MuSu, it's even more enjoyable than VpSu IMHO because you don't need to think about food or batform. Also it is more challenging because you cannot just run away from everything.

Edit. I don't see why you would want to stay bloodless as VpEn in Lair, the stealth difference is not that great with low Stealth skill (if it wasn't changed to zero lately)

Is stealth still higher while bloodless? I thought I read somewhere that it was changed/nerfed?

It was removed as far as I remember but I am not sure, that's why I put it in parentheses. I just don't see other reason to prefer bloodless for En so I assumed that probably I am wrong and the difference still exists.

I'm like the fiddly vampire food mechanic. Running all vamps as bloodless as possible as soon as possible is a bit of a mini game for me. It's the summoner food mechanic that is awful.

When I play Mu, i'm usually reveling in the purity of unarmed combat.

It is lair, the stealth bonus doesn't really matter. The poison immunity may be slightly relevant, but it doesn't really matter so much. Honestly, its lair, very little is relevant if you have two hex wands. If you can't kill death yaks now, walk away and kill them later (or never bother). I just find it fun to always play the "how bloodless can I play" game, but i don't take it so seriously to not auto explore or do other degenerate optimal play. Winning that minigame doesn't mean anything, it is just fun for me.
