This is a continuation of my "Need Help With Humans" DCA thread, in which the consensus was that I ought not be having as much trouble as I've been having lately. I've been taking copious in-game notes, describing my thought process strategically and tactically, to better enable feedback from you all. I've also found that this is making me play more carefully. Please excuse my horrible typing, in general I get it down and then fix typos, but Crawl isn't a word processor.

I think this is going well thus far. Please let me know if I've made any stupid mistakes build-wise or in particular battles

I would keep training LBl along with fighting/dodging for comfortable play. Basically then you won't need to open m screen until mindelay

Well I died again. I had no solution for a dancing halberd of distortion that was apparently a random spawn on O:2. At the end of the second attempt of swarming it with allies, I was running away and would reluctantly forego the O:2 shops for a while, but it surprised me with the amount of damage and I just unexpectedly died. I had all the escape consumables I needed, I was just playing a bit too fast and stepped when I should have blinked.

This game. It takes just one half-second of inattention to throw 4.5 hours down the drain.

VEF/Sandman, IIRC you have some init.txt magic that autosaves after certain criteria are met. I poked around at the link from SAndman's signature but didn't find them. Can you share them with me please? They would have helped me this time, since the halberd did the big slug of damage, and then 10 more to kill me. I must have moved instead of blinking in that extra move because I was playing too fast.

Monsters from adjacent branches—Elf in this case—spawn sometimes, on the stairs/portal I think.

That's a death that I would totally have. The correct response is to flee the level without engaging. RIP.

Dancing weapons with some brands are extremely surprising. I remember I recently almost died twice from full HP to a single dancing weapon in Elf 2, that's after clearing 2 Lair branches and Vaults 1-4. First time I believed it was just lucky so after teleporting I tried again but second time was very similar to first one except I did manage to kill it.

I've also recalled that I had throwing nets. But yes, I was wary of it because of the distortion, but I was thinking banishment and not straight-out death.

Yes, I meant that it is possible to miss when berserk ends and continue tabbing while being slow and without berserk HP boosts.
Probably it is not that dangerous unless you are color-blind (screen is red while berserking as far as I remember) but can be really annoying for Berserker so basically that comment is wrong and outdated.

Edit. Oh, maybe I meant that it is possible to die because autosaving does not happen if you lost too much HP on the same turn when berserk started/ended.

I did Hexer. Hydras are a big problem and I know I won't get a bladed weapon with Hexer. Plus the Slow helps me to run away if I have to.

That makes sense. The hexer seems strongest in general, especially for a hybrid character.
