Yes, I am addicted to Okawaru. 30 times he's given me victory, and for whatever reason I don't get bored with him.
I've had a hell of a time with barachi skalds. It's a terribly weak start; no real tools, poor equipment at the beginning, a level one spell that doesn't seem all too effective, and perfectly evenly spread stats in a modern Crawl in which dexterity is utterly unimpactful. I play under a restriction against learning and using any magic other than what I start with, and rarely bother even with that, so I always transform into pure melee bruiser regardless of what I begin the game with. Yet I feel more discouraged at times with this combo than I did with a formicid wizard. The slow speed is an awful combination with skald's other problems. A few times I've come very close to winning, only to get cheesed by a firestorming pan lord or killed by my own stupidity and hubris.
There are a couple questions I'd like to ask the pros here in case it could improve my odds of finally putting the nail into this thing and help me in the future. One, whether to keep training shields while using only a buckler under the *expectation* that you will find something larger, and two, when to train dodging. I often neglect it until very late in the game. Any other thoughts are welcome. I'm really hoping to turn this into a victory post either today or tomorrow so I can move on to other classes, even if some of them aren't really much better.
