Read one of 4 scrolls labeled WIURYAMASI IMHO, don't push your luck too much
Edit. FDS can be useless for a long time. I remember I had a game where I got first rC+ source in late Depths.

Rings, late game armour, good aux armor early, solid wand. It wouldn't be that impressive on average, but for D2 it's pretty damn good. iirc I just cleared 1-15, going to go to either Orc or Lair next. I have an elec great sword and a flaming great sword so I'm pretty solid as far as that goes. I also found three brand weapon scrolls. Later I'm hoping to get a vamp sword, but at least for now I want to be able to deal with hydras easily.

It's almost certainly the +EV ring, try on both, wear the one that gives you more EV. The only non-ev things that dex gives you is a very slightly improved chance to hit, and that's a miniscule enough bonus that it shouldn't factor into your decision making at all, and a very small bonus to stealth, which for you would be completely negated.

I wouldn't bother trying to get a vamp sword. That elec great sword will serve you very well. There aren't many dangerous enemies later that vamp actually works on. It's alright for Dungeon, Lair, branches, Orc and Depths, but then it falls off pretty sharply in my experience. In many cases you are better off just killing things faster and then resting. Unless you are speed-running of course...

Vamp is still great in Zot, especially if you can switch to non-vamp weapon for a few monsters who cannot be vamped.

Maybe it's the way I do Zot, or the characters I take there, but Draconians, Dragons, Killer Klowns and Orb Guardians are not usually scary. Are there any significant other vampable monsters?
The things that you usually get me in trouble are ALiches and ALiches.

There are only a few of ALiches in the whole Zot so you usually have enough food to remove vamp weapon.
ALiches are immune to drain/venom, don' care much about electro/flaming/cold. This leaves us with holy/antimagic/vorpal/speed and of course using those vs dozens of "Draconians, Dragons, Killer Klowns and Orb Guardians" is far from optimal or requires luck (speed is very rare).

I'm not proposing using the 'wrong' brand on Draconians, etc. It's unusual not to have access to Vorp, Speed, Flaming, Freezing or Elec. Those are all fine for the mundane enemies in Zot.

I just don't agree that vamp is much better. In my experience the healing isn't particularly consistent and often not particularly strong. Given that there's no huge time-pressure in Zot, unlike say Hell, killing things (faster) with a 'normal' weapon and resting on stairs has never been an issue for me.

If I have a good vamp weapon in a future game, and plenty of food, then I'll give it another go. The thought of staying near full health is of course nice, and it can make playing quite smooth with less resting.
