Advice on avoiding emergencies

I often find myself in a situation that seems like it will be an emergency in a few turns unless I play properly. In these situations, I'd like to learn what a good player would do. So I plan to post these cases in this one thread. If you have any advice, I'm happy to hear it. Also happy to hear any strategic mistakes, e.g. skilling or items.

So, to start off, I just ran into Rupert who has a 67% chance to confuse or paralyze me. Seems like certain death unless I get away.

The definitely safe thing is to ?blink all the way to the SW, which will be out of Rupert's LOS, then go straight to the stairs. But that seems wasteful. Is there an equally safe method that is less expensive? And is there any way to upgrade my character so I don't have to spend consumables in these situations? The only book I've found is Young Poisoners which is useless.

You could also read ?fog. I don't think Rupert will be able to berserk out of los

100% safety gives just scroll of blinking. Potion of haste is close to that in this specific situation because Rupert is really close to edge of view so it will have only 4-5 chances to paralyze you and even if it does the paralysis should last at least 5 turns to be dangerous and then you can use scroll of blinking if necessary. OF course you still can die if Rupert paralyses you for 7 turns as its first action, then goes berserk as its second action and then has about 4 berserking attacks which can kill most characters from full HP.
If you had a scroll of summoning or summon butterflies or summon lightning spire (or scroll of fog in corridor and stairs were closer), it might block line of fire allowing you to retreat. Fear is unlikely to work, the same about teleport other and other things that check MR/HD.

In terms of "avoiding" emergencies, you should generally react to Rupert as soon as he moves into LoS -- it seems like you continued to move while Rupert was in view. You can prevent accidentally moving when dangerous monsters come into view by adding force_more entries for all (dangerous) uniques and monster types:

In most situation you flee Rupert. With enough MR you have an option to melee, but you need a way to either mitigate or escape if his rage mechanic kicks into gear.

It's better to use blink scrolls in those 100% gonna die scenarios like Rupert here.

So it seems like a ?blink situation then, which was my inclination. IIUC, ?fog would be risky since he might see through the fog on my way to the corner (4 turns).

I did not take any turns after spotting him - I always move with Shift-Direction. I suspect that he moved west as I was moving east, which is why he's not at edge of LOS.

Teleport takes 3 turns to kick in. Thats almost always enough time to get away from rupert. There is however the small chance of 'porting into his LOS again.

Or he paralyzes you before the tp kicks in, and you land within a group of dangerous monsters.

sure. Only use teleport as escape strategy if you have cleared a reasonable portion of the level.

Ended up using the ?blink since it seemed to be the only safe option. Now in Lair.

Strategy-wise, I'm a little worried that I'm not getting enough escape options. Haven't found any useful books, and Throwing only softens things up before they reach melee. I'll let you know how I progress.

Another situation where the optimal tactics elude me. I opened a door to find 3 elf knights, 1 elf mage, 1 elf archer, and an ironheart preserver staring me in the face. On the same turn I opened the door, an elf knight hit me with a Stone Arrow for about 25% of my HP. So this looks like an emergency.

1. How would a good player handle this situation?
2. Anything I can do to avoid this in the future? I guess opening the door from one tile above would have been smarter, but that's pretty tedious to open every single door that way.

1) I don't know what a good player would do, I would just activate heroism and finesse (in this order because you are at 6* of piety so you will still have enough piety for finesse after heroism).
2) It is typical situation, nothing can be improved because there is a corridor anyway
3) I don't see which spells might help here for character with Int 12. Freezing cloud and Invisibility would be a bad XP investment IMHO and I assume you have not found Spectral Weapon/Animate Dead

Stop training Throwing, you already have javelins at min delay.

Don't think this way! Consumables are to be consumed, when you meet dangerous things or make stupid mistakes. Rupert is a dangerous thing, and using consumables to overcome him is expected and wise for nearly every character.

In your elf situation: hard to see you losing this fight with Heroism and Finesse. Those elves will never sort themselves out to get more than 2 attacking per turn, and you'll chew through them pretty fast. If you take another big hit, your escape options are solid (blinking then haste looks best).

Yeah, when you get hit for 25% of your HP, it could be:
- Normal or even low for that monster; this is a crisis.
- Very high for that monster; worth worrying, but no need to press panic buttons
Knowing which is pretty much just experience (or the kind of detailed analysis noone does).

I would not train throwing from 18 to 19 to increase my base damage from 28 to 29, it's a rather small increase, about 3 percents

Yeah, Fighting, Dodging, and Armour are more valuable than Throwing right now. You have 0 Armour now and although you're in ring mail, 6 or so Armour is very cheap right now and should give 2 or 3 more AC. I'd train enough to get 3 AC and switch to Fighting and Dodging.

I'm trying a DDFi, never played DD before. I have no idea when I should use the healing ability so I've been walking around at low health, which seems dangerous to me. At any rate, I just ran into Grinder. It seems like guaranteed death for me, but I think good players would have avoided this situation somehow. So what should I have done differently? Tried the ID mini-game earlier? Healed earlier?

Any tactical advice for this situation would also be welcome, but the strategic part is what interests me more.

Heal up once and then run for your life to the SW and to the next upstairs. He is a normal speed monster, so he can only overtake you if he manages to paralyse you. Once safe, try to identify a few helpful potions, in case you encounter him again. If the upstairs are too far away, then consider using downstairs, and come back much later. Let's hope that the altar of Makhleb that you are probably looking for is not on D3.
With your (almost) unlimited healing, and your damage shaving, I think you should be able to defeat Grinder, even if he does paralyse you a couple of times.

Yes, never walk with too low HP, never walk with stacks of 2+ unknown scrolls when teleportation and blink are still unknown.
I don't think damage shaving will do much vs Grinder, on average it reduces damage by 1.75 at XL 4, that's almost nothing.
Don't train Fighting this early next time, DD is the least interested species in that skill.
Also I am not sure why you removed shield, it is great during early game when you typically fight one on one.

Thanks. Healing and running worked fine. Grinder just chased me stupidly.

I'll re-equip the shield and focus exclusively on Axes. I was thinking that adding to my weapon delay was a bad idea, but I guess not.

Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Shield does slow your attacks but it is not a big deal because your attacks are slow anyway (you are typically far from min delay early game, spending 1.2 turn per attack instead of 1.0 is not that bad) and SH is really great when you have low AC/EV (it happens with Tr often). But it can change later, for extreme example, if you have quickblade of electro at min delay and might attack with 0.3 delay, the shield penalty can make you attack with 0.4-0.6 delay, of course this is really bad because you lose half of attacks while your defense is not increased that much. Now add +10 plate armour on top of that and it becomes even worse, SH does almost nothing now (most attacks would be stopped anyway, especially as DD).
If you are seriously interested in all those, consider using fsim, it is very useful for making these decisions.
