YASD - not knowing where to go

Well this is the furthest I have got ever. Lair 8, Orc 4, and dungeon 16, killed first hydra. Didn't know where to go next. Tries snake 1 - ran into a high level naga, and failed to execute the excape properly. (forgot blink, forgot healing, tried a risky combat)

4 questions
1) where was the next place to go?
2) how were my skills looking
3) how were the spells looking
4) which God to go with.

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

It looks as if your character is a bit spread. Personally, i think Nemelex is a great god and offers much utility, but it's better if you are not a caster.
You invested many points into spellcasting without having many spells, you followed Nemelex without investing into evocations, difficult to see a clear concept.

Snake is a good place to go at this level, i think, but maybe hive first would have been better (you seem to have missed the entrance, maybe one of the wax secret doors)

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

FWIW, if you want to play a Troll of Nemelex, then play a Monk (for huge unarmed capabilities - Summoning decks can take for the rest) or even better, a Hunter (for the same reasons, plus some large rocks at the very start).

As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

Plan was Troll necro with support. Probably over emphasised the support aspect. Magic dart was good initially for the extra range, but pain had higher damage in the end I think. I wanted conjour fire for tactical sealing off of corridors.

Trying agin focusing on animate dead, and pain, dispel undead (works wonders on vampire mosquitos) and seeing what else comes up. - perhaps train throwing - javelins were ok, and large rocks later.

So given that - probably not nemelex. - but the question remains - what instead - kiku?

I had more spells available, (about 5 books in a stash in the temple) - just wanted them at at least very good before i bothered memorising them.

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

A troll Necro can work i guess, just like a deep dwarf necro. In that case Kiku can be a valid choice indeed (think there is a deep dwarf necro guide in the wiki, bit outdated though).

Might work as a hybrid, but i think its either melee or ranged, not both? Melee unarmed works good with a troll, but ofcourse you have to be close to the baddies. But you have loads of HP, so should be fine?

Anyhow, sounds like a fun concept to me :). Good luck on your next one (if you make another, but i think you will).

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

Here's what I do:
Do Dungeon and complete any vaults/portals till you find Lair
Do Lair and alternate Lair/Dungeon if Lair gets too tough.
Do Dungeon till you find Hive if you haven't found it.
Complete Lair.
Complete Hive if you have rPois, otherwise do Dungeon till you find Vaults.
Alternate Vaults/Dungeon till Vault:7; if bored, do Orc.
Do Orc fully; helpful if you have mapping and/or dig.
Do Snake/Shoals/Swamp 1-4 as follows
- Snake if rPois
- Shoals if rPois, clarity, levitation
- Swamp if rPois, optional levitation, and ways to kill hydra.
Do Snake/Shoals/Swamp 5.
Carefully Do Crypt if rN+++ or ++
Carefully Do Elf fully
Carefully Do Dungeon fully
Carefully Do Vaults fully
If have artefact clothes and rCorr/conservation, do Slime Pit 1-5 carefully; do Slime Pit 6 if have ctrl-teleport
Carefully Do Zot 1-4
Do Zot 5 or Hell entrance:1 - don't take rune from zot 5 unless you don't want extended game
Do Pandemonium/Abyss/Hell branches/ziggurats/Tomb
Take zot:5 rune and win

It's pretty much my reinterpretation of the walkthrough from the Crawl Wiki. Not that I used it for reference or anything, I didn't.

That would do more harm than good. It's just XuaXua's personal branch order and it would be a bad idea to follow it exactly (in particular most 3-runers should stay out of Slime, run through Zot:1-4 instead of clearing them, and Snake/Shoals:5 should nearly come after clearing the main dungeon).

In addition there is some dubious information in there, like the "rN++ or +++ for Crypt" bit since you don't need any rN for that place. cTele doesn't help at all on Slime:6. Orc 1-4 is easier then Dungeon to Vaults and most Crawl players do it before then.

Re: YASD - not knowing where to go

Of course you could just use a wand of digging or disintegration, which is more common. cTele will almost never be a determining factor on Slime:6.

I'd say the best use for cTele on Slime:6 is for escaping back to the stairs when you have killed the royal jelly and are now surrounded by jellies.

Sure, cTele isn't useless here, but it shouldn't be a determining factor. The best way to kill TRJ when you don't have strong area spells is standing in the corridor while hasted anyway. And you may just as well use an uncontrolled blink to get out of the surrounding group or even an uncontrolled teleport. Personally I think it's safer to just clear the rest of the level first so any teleport you need to use to escape TRJ during the fight is safe.

Just dig one room, walk in, get the loot you want, proceed with the other three. :| I've probably cleared Slime for 10+ times now and never had a problem with this. I didn't use cTele once.
(okay, three times were with Jiyva)

While it may not be utterly useless on Slime:6 I would enter Slime:6 without cTele any day. rCorr, rMut and rC+ and Stasis are much more important in making the decision and weighing up the risks.
