CIP GreyDrWn (FE)

This character began as "viable character" on the selection screens. Excellent items to start with, so I've been acting like an FE from turn 1.

Some noob questions below, but it's been so long since I've won a game that I'm being careful instead of just playing for giggles.

I'm in the Temple with all Temple gods' altars present. I've won a Draconian, but not yet a Wanderer, so I can take any god and still (if I win) add to my life list. Kiku and Yred are strong but I think I should pass because derived undead are stupid around Conjure Flame. Fedhas is strong but unfun and I don't want to play it. I've won Makh and have some experience, but no with, with Hepl. Ru and Zin are strong but I've never tried them. Sif I don't grok well, and Veh I've won but it doesn't feel that strong.

Skilling: I'm aiming for Sticky at 10%, then more defenses, then Fireball with early Lair XP. Is blowgun and Ignite Poison worth doing? It seems a roundabout way that would cost more XP to get effective than just pushing Fireball. If I find OTR, though, I'm all in on it.

Melee: Should I train up the staff, or the halberd for poking over conjured flame?

Don't forget that derived undead and Inner Flame is good and hilarious.

Ru and Hepl are both strong. Zin and Sif are less so, but viable.

I haven't used needles and Ignite Poison, but it seems worse than your other spell options, possibly including Flame Tongue.

Confuse would be good after some defenses.

I think I'd use the halberd without training Polearms and wait for a better weapon until deciding which school to train. It might be smarter to just train Polearms/Staves, though.

Although you do need to be aware that surviving derived undead caught in the blast from inner flame become hostile (as if you had hit them with an attack) easy enough to work around, possibly unfortunate if you forget.

Also it is good to know that the damage from being covered with sticky flame or in a fire cloud happens before a critter moves, so inner flame explosions from those deaths will happen before movement.

Unfortunately, Zin has some food-conduct. So just for the sake of preserving your sanity, I would not recommend early Zin with a magically-inclined character. I say that even though Zin is probably my favourite god.

Ru is pretty fun. (I personally think Zin is stronger, but you know, food.) Just bear in mind that you may end up sacrificing some spell schools, so don't get carried away with learning all the spells you come across. I can't comment on Hep.

Halberd is a good choice. Doing damage from a safe distance without using MP is extremely strong. Many monster will just stand there on the other side and let you poke them.

I was under the impression that needles + ignite was a waste of time, but it was changed in 0.19 and I haven't used it since.

I made a lot of progress last night and am ready to enter Lair. I went with Kiku mainly for the familiarity with it and the Inner Flame reminder. I want to do Ru someday, for sure. I found a staff of fire, some awesome randart boots and also a randart battleaxe. Got the early-Dungeon scary uniques trifecta, Grinder, Sigmund and Pikel, fortunately they all showed up late. Also had the gnoll castle with Flame Tongue, so they all got steam baths.

Concerning the battleaxe, I think it is a trap. Getting to mindelay in Axes would be a massive XP cost, and I’ll be much better off with making a spear of pain I can poke over flame clouds with. I probably ought to be using it at 0 skill instead of Yiuf’s quarterstaff on popcorn, but I’m wary of the slow speed. A recent character was doing great, found a sweet battleaxe training maces, and died very soon after trying to use it. Of course chaos will bite me eventually, too.

Concerning the boots, ought I train Evo just for the +Blink and if so, when?

I have been feeling like my ranged killdudes is weak. Should I go back and pick up again the hunting sling of freezing, or learn Fireball, or learn Animate Dead? The only problem with the sling (or the blowgun) is that in practice I forget to unwield it when I need to and I want to lean on the early staff of fire. The problem with Fireball is the noise. I think Animate Dead is the way to go, with or without Inner Flame.

Even though I’ve had it explained to me several times and have spectated it, I still haven’t figured out how to use Conjure Flame in an open area to force a spiny frog say to walk into it. Giving hydras a line of them to slog through though is fine.

I think going for ranged attack with Kiku is a trap.
Personally I would pain-brand a hand axe and would become a hybrid, eventually going for the min-delayed battleaxe by around Vaults. As Dr you don't need to train Armour and have nice AC for caster so that battleaxe is more attractive than for other combos.
Definitely learn Animate Dead, it's amazing with Kiku's corpse delivery.
Underestimated: cleaving, Deep Elf, Formicid, Vehumet, EV
Overestimated: AC, GDS

Expand on this please. Right now I feel naked because I didn't get derived undead until Kiku's second book and need to train Spc and Nec to get AD online. Flame Tongue has nice range now, but the staff doesn't help it anymore and it doesn't do much damage if the target has any AC at all. I do see animated corpses as a form of ranged attack, so with AD I don't feel like I need to have a ranged conjuration also.

I could very easily see myself transitioning into a conjure flame & sticky flame melee dude with AD, Death Channel, and Bolt of Draining instead of Bolt of Fire (which I haven't found yet anyway).

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.

So i want to focus Spc until I can memorize AD. I"m not sure I need more Necro right now, since I have Kiku too help with miscasts and most everything in Lair leaves a corpse. Axes fro sure, I am persuaded by your urging to get it to mindelay ASAP, but I'm also feeling like I want some more dodging. If I'm going to be spending a lot of time in melee range of things I am nervous to not have a bit more EV.

Nice boots!

Let me emphasize that Receive Corpses + Animate Dead is fantastically strong for a huge chunk of the 3-rune game. Even if the zombies immediately get slaughtered, you can swap places with them to make a retreat. (Simulacrum is a great upgrade late. Death Channel is great, but can't bail you out quickly.)

I think evokable blink gets reliable with like 5 Evo, so cheap.

Has a staff of death dropped? Some Evo would make enhancer staves workable in melee, too.

Beyond that, I don't think it matters so much which weapon school you choose to pain brand. Pick a fast and cheap weapon in that class and kill stuff amazingly fast. Polearms are a bit more convenient and safer, but a grey Dr has good AC, so you don't need to play that safe. You should be less likely to get surrounded with all the allies you're generating (Remember to generate allies!), so the benefit of axes is not as great. A quick blade is amazing, if one drops in your lap, but don't wait for the perfect weapon. A spear, whip, hand axe, falchion, quarterstaff, or short blade are all good (although you'll probably want to branch out of short blades eventually, if you go that route).

I mean it is often a good idea to use pain-gift on a fast weapon (whip, spear, hand axe) and later use a high-damage non-pain weapon (greatmace, glaive, battleaxe) vs monsters who are immune to pain. So you go for min delay on that fast weapon as soon as possible and then later train more weapon skills without big hurry for those orbs of fire and alike.

I in turn confused you, I knew you were referring to the fast weapon and that was the mindelay I was referring to, also.

Early Lair turned up a +5 amulet of reflection, and searching for a buckler and one-handers revealed that a whip of electrocution had been hiding under a stone since before I ever entered Lair (or started training axes). So now I have dropped the chaos staff and am using the electrowhip for melee, but I stopped soon after doing this when I realized that I may want to train M&F instead of Axes. AD is online and has helped me.

With this whip I feel like the need to rush to a pain weapon is less, since electrocution doesn't lose to pain until Necro 10 or so. When I had a mundane axe I was carrying to train Axes with, I felt underpowed and that I needed to get pain online ASAP. Now I can spam corpses because I don't have to build to 6* as quickly.

I also think I should treat the Axes skill points (~720) as a sunk cost and train M&F. Yes, I have a nice battleaxe in hand, but with whips of pain and electrocution I'll be in good shape for a long time, time enough to find a greatmace or an eveningstar.

I think you should train M&F. Electrowhip is great. Painwhip is great.

That battleaxe is very good but you're a long way from needing it and who knows what will drop by then.

Cross-training helps a tiny bit, too.

This character has now finished Lair, Orc and Dungeon.

I did switch to M&F and got the whip down to mindelay. I was not having any killdudes problems when I hit 6*, so I waited on pain branding hoping that a demon whip might turn up. It didn’t, but an eveningstar did. Now I have a +4 electrowhip, a +0 eveningstar, and Spellbinder in a shop that I cannot afford. No great mace has spawned. I have accumulated 5 ?EW, and again since I had no killdude problems I figured I should wait until I decided what to pain brand. So the options I see are:

A) +9 pain whip
B) +9 electrowhip and keep waiting on pain branding
C) +4 electrowhip and +5 pain whip
D) +4 electrowhip and +5 eveningstar of pain
E) +4 electrowhip and keep waiting on pain branding and using the scrolls

I don’t think I want to do A and lose electrocution against rN+ monsters until I figure out what the eveningstar will be (I don’t have a branding scroll yet). I’m not really sure what to do with the remaining options.

I do think that all these good options, and also the amulet, mean that I'll eventually be upgrading from a buckler to a shield.

A ring {*Tele Slay+6} has spawned. I shunned it even though I am using fast weapons, though it did just now occur to me as I’m writing this that I do have Recall in a book I could learn, so maybe *Tele wouldn’t be so bad.

I welcome your advice!

I am not sure what is optimal here but I would pain-brand that eveningstar for convenience, then you can use it vs everything and it will save much time and many key presses.
Though if talking about optimal strategy, probably paining a whip and enchanting that eveningstar is optimal. I mean you don't need high enchantment on pain/electro whips because most damage comes from brand which is unaffected by enchantment. And the enchanted eveningstar will be very useful vs monsters with both rElec and rN+.

I'm not sure what's best, either, and they all seem very good. Probably pain + enchant the eveningstar is strictly best.

Pain branding also gives +2 enchantment, right?

wizmode tells me that a +9 eveningstar of pain at M&F 18 does better against all benchmark pain-sensitive targets (troll, Polyphemous, org guardian) than a +9 whip of pain. The +9 eveningstar of pain also does better than a +9 electrowhip against wraiths and equal vs. pearl dragon. So pain brand the eveningstar it is.

If you don't have trouble killing things, then you could choose the Necronomicon. If you need pain branding, you may have access to excruciating wounds. It's a bit noisy and costs MP, but that's not likely a problem for this character.

On the other hand, if you have no intention of learning high-level spells, then just brand the eveningstar.
