CiP- DsGl of Usk. What should I do for Ranged?

Hey all!

I'm currently in Lair and have got long blades to 14 (mindelay for falchion and longsword), and I'm wondering where to skill from here. I've got my hands on the EE starting book, the IE starting book, and the book of clouds, so I'm thinking of making this character a mage hybrid. I've also got the demonspawn mutation that lowers the encumberance of armor, which would also help with this strategy. However, it might take a while before I have any real ranged help online from magic so I'm wondering if it might be better to focus defense for now and then increase slings instead.

You are in Lair and still use a falchion? This is a bad situation, falchions are early game weapons. Don't you have at least a scimitar somewhere, or even better, a great sword?

I believe +3 falchion of draining deals more damage than +0 scimitar/great sword of flaming and alike.
I would train just Fighting for a while, then Armour/Dodging.
I am not sure you need ranged with Uska. Consider switching to light armour and training some stealth, you have Uska, crosstraining for Short Blades, Nightstalker, Demonic Guardian for several ways to stab.
If acquirement has not been identified yet, consider reading unknown scrolls or using identify on them.

You should consider going into earth magic. You have the night-stalker mutation, which plays well with the short-ranged, but powerful one-shot solutions Earth Magic gives you. No swapping is needed before you shoot. But you need to train three skills (SC, conjurations and earth), which is much steeper than just training one ranged weapons skill.

nightstalker = tab harder, evocations give all the range you'll ever need.

I'm not sure you need a strong DMG ranged option, but it's definitely worth learning the value T3 spells. Lesser beckoning + conjure flame is a strong combo for a long time and mephitic cloud deals with non-naga-sharpshooter/thorn-hunter ranged threats. The extra experience you would spend getting strong T6 clouds online is probably better spent in fighting>armour>dodging so you don't die.
