CIP: FeTr^Oka, a transmutery transmuter

I got a couple of melee felids going before this one but had trouble finding hex wands and books and ran into a wall.

This transmuter, however, looks like a winner. A stealthy transmuter works nicely early on, and a book with Petrify pre-Lair gave the necessary tool to safely stab a lot of Lair dudes. Passwall and +Inv ring made this cat a super-stabber and Statue Form from the Labyrinth before doing Lair runes made Spider a breeze.

+Inv + Statform + Heroism + Finesse makes shenanigans like this possible; clearing the rune vault in Spider:4:

Took a peek in Depths:1 and found it relatively uncrowded and proceeded to clear it. V:1-4 was next and mostly incident free, thanks to quite slow playing and liberal use of invisibility, statform, and god powers.

Went back to Depths and U:3 was a full-level vault with all the upstairs in the middle. I stairdanced with the usual buffs until I got some breathing space, but some positioning mistakes led to my first near-death experience caused by a LRD-casting deep troll earth mage, a bane for my low-HP statue cats.

I had picked up RM in U:2 and decided it was Shoals time. My gameplay slowed even more and I had to skip most of A:2 because Nikola was blocking a couple of stairs but luckily he kept on sleeping as I snuck (sneaked?) back upstairs. Having had the foresight to apply Heroism for a Stealth boost before descending might've helped.

In A:4 I cleared all the rooms with the same tactic: Statform, +Inv, Heroism, Passwall in, stabfest. If I landed on water I quaffed a flight potion. If the room had particularly dangerous dudes, I invoked Finesse as well. Worked well. Found the rune in the last room, of course.

I might do Elf (sans the E:3 vault) or Crypt next. Silence would help in both, but haven't found it yet.

Picked up Aura of Abjuration, always a nice addition to the toolkit, and cleared Elf (apart from the end vault since still no Silence spell), Crypt, and rest of the Depths, all without scary moments. Reached UC:22 so this cat is pretty much maxed out offensively, just in time for the 3rd rune.

V:5 would be my primary choice, but I guess I have the tools for Abyss and Slime as well. I've stashed a whopping 8 curemuts so badmuts shouldn't be a factor in this run and I could buy a book with Apport for Abyss. Maybe I should leave the choice for random.org.

Re: CIP: FeTr^Oka, a transmutery transmuter

Picked 1 for V:1, 2 for Abyss, 3 for Slime and rolled 1d3 in random.org: got 2 so Abyss it was. If you play carefully, like I do when I make a CIP post and really want to win it, Abyss is one of the most cognitively draining locations to play: monsters pop out from everywhere, and terrain changes all the time and might instantaneously change the situation for worse. I also explore manually. It took me 2k turns this time, but managed to apport the rune and flee.

FR: Place Pan runes deep in Abyss so I'll never get the urge to all-run again.

But I think I'll try to snatch a few more, after the following messages.

Re: CIP: FeTr^Oka, a transmutery transmuter

Cleared the E:3 vault with ?silence, Oka buffs and Dragon Form. There's something rewarding about just stepping into the vault as a dragon and shredding all the elves to pieces.

Then onto Slime, where I had a couple of hairy moments when I descended to heal up and some dudes had appeared. I tried my hardest to avoid malmutates with Butterflies and Sticks to Snakes, but one got through. The snakes got most of the shining eyes though. I wonder if some other summoning spells would work even better for this purpose.

V:5 was a tabfest with a few Abjurations and Silences, as I finally found the spell in Elf.

With Statform, Darkness, and Silence, Tomb was straightforward. I teleported out once when too many greater mummies came into LoS at once and Silence was starting to run out. Without the wand, it takes a lot more luring which doesn't sound much fun.

I'm only missing CBlink from a solid all-runing kit. And maybe hasting and healing wands. I guess it's been long enough since I last gave it a go if I'm considering it.

Cleared Zot as well and it was a mixed bag. At first I played it safe, +Inv wiped out all the draconian packs. In Zot:4-5 I held my ground in situations where I should've just positioned better. The result: I burned through a good amount of HW potions to conserve the "perfect score" of 0 deaths. Well, at least it worked, but I'm down to 2.

But Zot is empty now. Orb and flee, or fetch all the runes?

I haven't personally taken a felid through extended, as I fear that the low hp would make some of the swarms just too high risk to really get through. If you're brave enough to try it, it's pretty likely that you won't fully die since you've had 0 deaths up until this point - you could die and then leave extended if it ends up being too much. I guess it's ultimately up to how much you want to keep playing the character.

I have two successful similarly built felid all-runers and one that perished, so it's doable, albeit risky. IIRC, the winners had /HW though, and at least the other one had CBlink as well.

Having only 2 !HW feels risky (but I can dip those 36 curing potions into !haste to make more, right??)

Maybe I should take a peek in the U Zig. Any of /HW, CBlink, more !HW/?blinking, and maybe even the Necronomicon for Borg would be welcome -- if I don't end up burning more consumables that I'd find. Although my biggest risk in zigging has often been diving too deep; I have lost too many good chars that way.

Note to self: remember to upgrade RM to DM. And maybe memorize Shadow Creatures. I wonder if there are some other other useful spells that'd be useful in Zig/extended.

Is Discord of any use? I've never used it because it sounds so dangerous, having zerking enemies around seems more like a danger than a boost.

Last time I gave up on extended when I was about to run out of HW / blinking. If you feel that's already now, then I would suggest just winning.

I didn't enjoy statue form cat much. Statue form of course gave some nice AC, but the damage was so-so, and I didn't have any proper ranged attacks. You also don't have any solid ranged attacks, but you are more stealthy.

I would definitely stop training spell-casting and get some decent conjuration (iron shot or so) and/or summons (shadow creatures probably).

Lack of !HW is the main issue for sure.

Ok, the plan is to say a prayer for the floorgod and take a peek in the U Zig. If I'm not better off (or am worse even) after exiting, I'll just make a run for it.

As for the lack of a ranged attack, I find Iron Shot to be underwhelming as a statformer. My reasoning is: statform makes melee a lot better, but everything else a lot worse. Without boosts, punching dudes is the only action that takes < 10 auts. Being Slow makes everything else take 15.

The lack of ranged is somewhat remedied with wands, and using Darkness to lower LOS and using Lesser Beckoning to snatch primary targets to melee range. Having said that, I've all but forgot about Beckoning in this game so far.

Also, Petrify sort of works as a ranged attack against many threats: I use it a lot to paint distant targets and they are either disabled for a while or get safely one-shot from melee range.

I got some levels where +Inv helped a lot, until I descended into Zig:13, cast Shadow Creatures and got a mummy. Shit. I was down to my last !HW.

Buffed up, casted Darkness and Silence. Barely got all the greater mummies within the Sil radius, but soon realized I wasn't killing things quick enough not to ran out. Evoke Tele a bit late and what followed was a comedy of errors, including evoking disc of storms while at questionably low HP and running away from monsters while forgetting to cast any summons:

But I really lucked out, remembered about summons again and somehow managed to clear the level.

Overran Vestibule. Sleepy Geryon took a statuefelidstab for eight exclamation marks. A statuefelid might be the weakest of the Statue Formers, but when they get stabs, there damage output is ridiculous.
