Basically, I'm at the stage where I haven't got much left to do aside from Zot and the post-endgame, but as a hybrid I haven't found a lot of the spells I would hope to have by this point: Abjuration, Haste, and Repel/Deflect Missiles being the main ones. I'm also missing a good mid-range offensive spell; I've got access to Throw Icicle and Ice Storm, but essentially nothing in between.

I'm reluctant to go to Shoals:5 without Repel or Deflect Missiles (but could learn Phase Shift - would that be an acceptable substitute?) and the same goes for Elf:5 and Vault:8. Crypt is pretty much off-limits, as Mara, Mennas and Khufu + greater mummies are all clustered around the stairs.

I haven't been to Hive, as I didn't need the food and I was saving it in case I needed to regain piety at any point, but it seems fairly unlikely I'll find anything to change the situation there.

Should I focus more on necromancy/summoning, and maybe hope to learn Haunt? Or just go for translocations and get Controlled Blink, which I also have in a book?

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

elf 5 should not be too problematic without repel/deflect, especially with your high stealth. it should give you a considerable boost item-wise and a nice selection of spells.
in vault 8 repel/deflect does help for sure, but it can be played without it. shoals should even be a bit easier, with flight/swiftness and high stealth ranged attackers should not be an issue (but there is not much to gain, equipment-wise).

you have a very nice amulet, why do you wear warding instead?

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

Shoals 5 doesn't really have anything that can see invisible, so if you have a ring of invisibility you can pretty much walk through unchallenged, stabbing everybody. It's rough on somebody who's just cleared Lair 8 and Orc 4, not so much on somebody who's currently considering Vaults 8 or Elf 5.

Lure the welcoming committee in Vaults 8 into a prepared zombie mob upstairs, and then you should have quite a bit of backup to work with when you're clearing the quadrants. Corpse drop if you run low on zombies, and if you can get Haunt online that'll help too.

Haunt is pretty good in Elf 5.

For Crypt, you can cast Control Teleport, pop a teleport scroll, enter Crypt 1, read magic mapping, and move directly to the stairwell down to bypass the uniques. There'll be two other exit stairwells on the way back up, so as long as you do it all in one trip you won't have a problem.

You really saw no dragon hides this entire game? +4 dragon armour is a really easy Trove to get into, and it probably has some good stuff. Worth the enchant armor scrolls, certainly.

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

Ok, thanks for the advice...

I really have seen no dragon hides the entire game - this is probably the first game where I have cleared most of Vaults & Dungeon without seeing a single "vanilla" dragon. A few ice and storm dragons though. I wonder if I could get a hide from a corpse given by Kiku if I keep trying...

I was just wearing the warding amulet for rN+ because of Khufu's mummies, it would help a bit against torment.

I think there is a ring of invisibility in a shop somewhere, so I'll try using that for Shoals:5 as the next move.

Edit: also, I'm pretty sure all the exit stairwells on Crypt:1 are close together by where the uniques are.

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

Update: Shoals:5 was relatively easy with invisibility, except that Xtahua and Margery also showed up there. I now have a dragon hide from Xtahua, but I'm one enchant armour scroll short of being able to get into the trove.

Cleared D:26 & 27, then went back to Crypt.

The uniques were sleeping, and I stabbed Mara to death in one hit. Mennas followed me back up the stairs, where I had prepared a zombie horde, and I also tried spamming simulacrums, but he blitzed through them all in about 2 turns. I led him away then teleported back to the stairs, so he is still loose on Vault:3 somewhere. I then went down the stairs and with haste and potions of magic killed Khufu with Dispel Undead.

On Crypt:1, I found Book of Wizardry and Book of the Sky, so I can get both Haste and Deflect Missiles, though I need some more Spellcasting for the slots; I'll see what I find on the rest of Crypt.

I'm still wary of going to Elf:5 without Abjuration and with low MR - I think I was pretty lucky not to get banished on Elf:1-4, though I could probably survive the Abyss now.

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

Elf:5 is doable without Abjuration, especially with as much firepower as your character has. Ice Storm should make short work of the vault elves, and if you can get Deflect Missiles online, that will protect you from most of the stuff they can do to you. It's also notable that two of the more obnoxious ones - the Master Archers and the Blademasters - can't see invisible. At your level, it's usually possible to kill the Demonologists before their summons get out of hand, too.

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

I'm nowhere near having Ice Storm castable - I just said I had access to it, meaning I have found a book with it in and could theoretically learn it at some point.

It's a bit unfortunate I've trained Ice Magic so much, as I have found a good array of fire, earth and air spells, but not so much in the way of ice. Now I've found Book of the Sky I can start training air magic for Deflect Missiles and maybe eventually get Tornado - though I might be better off training earth for Iron Shot as it doesnt wreck my stealth so much. I'm wary of using any of the lightning spells because of the noise they make, so if I do learn a level 9 spell I'd rather get one that does as much damage as possible as quickly as possible for killing big enemies in an emergency.

My main weapons in Elf:5 would be poisonous clouds from Evaporate or the rod of venom, melee/stabbing and zombies, unless I find some alternatives in Crypt (Freezing Cloud, Bolt of Cold, where are you?)

Re: CIP - a bit stuck due to lack of spells.

A quick suggestion that might not be helpful is that I have just discovered how wonderful orb of destruction is.
I had a poison/ice mage who really struggled with things that could resist both (although dispel undead is also great). Orb of destruction really filled a void for me that was similar to your need.
The slow launch makes it a lot of fun to target too. :-)
