[YAVP] TrHu of Trog, first win in years
Yeah, I know, a three-rune Troll win isn't exactly worth bragging about. But my last win is so old that it was a MDDK, so whatever! I've been splatting HOArs, GrEEs, and various Tms and AEs on and off for years on end until I finally said fuck it and picked Troll. And then won on my first attempt. Because Troll.
I actually skipped Vaults: 5 altogether and did Slime instead because I have gotten an unconscionable number of characters killed in late Vaults and I am a huge baby. Seriously, four of my next five highest scores since my last win died in the Vaults somehow. (The fifth was a MiBe who used Berserk against The Royal Jelly for some incomprehensible reason). Even this character came really close to dying in Vaults 3...I teleported away from Saint Roka and his cronies so many times (he kept attracting various convokers and such). Kind of wish I had remembered to go back and spite-kill him.
Trying to think of major mistakes I should learn from here...well, I found Mottled Dragon Scales in the Lair and didn't enchant them immediately. I guess I was hoping for Swamp or Fire scales but they both came too late for waiting to have been particularly worth it. (Although I did find Bai Suzhen in Swamp...and then killed her over deep water without thinking. Whoops!) I also trained Evocations and then never really used them. I found a +10 Rod of Inaccuracy in Elf 3 (which I did fairly early because the Vaults are scary and my MR was ridiculous even before Trog's Hand) but Large Rocks are so good that I always forgot about it. Then Trog gave me like fifty Javelins of Penetration just in case I needed AoE. The Rod of Clouds would have been worth the time to remember, at least. And also the cloak of invisibility which I remembered, like, twice.
My resistances got super good super fast thanks to artifact rings in shops, and I got Tele/Haste/Heal Wounds wands pretty early too. I probably should have gone for more runes (my record is still only four) but I was hungry for a win and getting kind of bored of such a simple character. Worshiping Trog and having no use for 99% of the gifts is depressing. And so many unusable artifacts left on the floor. Elf 3 had an artifact +7 Demon Trident of Electrocution. My inner MfIE wept.
I'm sure that whatever bad habits I learned here playing a Troll will help me continue to splat other backgrounds for even more years to come before my next win.

I actually skipped Vaults: 5 altogether and did Slime instead because I have gotten an unconscionable number of characters killed in late Vaults and I am a huge baby. Seriously, four of my next five highest scores since my last win died in the Vaults somehow. (The fifth was a MiBe who used Berserk against The Royal Jelly for some incomprehensible reason). Even this character came really close to dying in Vaults 3...I teleported away from Saint Roka and his cronies so many times (he kept attracting various convokers and such). Kind of wish I had remembered to go back and spite-kill him.
Trying to think of major mistakes I should learn from here...well, I found Mottled Dragon Scales in the Lair and didn't enchant them immediately. I guess I was hoping for Swamp or Fire scales but they both came too late for waiting to have been particularly worth it. (Although I did find Bai Suzhen in Swamp...and then killed her over deep water without thinking. Whoops!) I also trained Evocations and then never really used them. I found a +10 Rod of Inaccuracy in Elf 3 (which I did fairly early because the Vaults are scary and my MR was ridiculous even before Trog's Hand) but Large Rocks are so good that I always forgot about it. Then Trog gave me like fifty Javelins of Penetration just in case I needed AoE. The Rod of Clouds would have been worth the time to remember, at least. And also the cloak of invisibility which I remembered, like, twice.
My resistances got super good super fast thanks to artifact rings in shops, and I got Tele/Haste/Heal Wounds wands pretty early too. I probably should have gone for more runes (my record is still only four) but I was hungry for a win and getting kind of bored of such a simple character. Worshiping Trog and having no use for 99% of the gifts is depressing. And so many unusable artifacts left on the floor. Elf 3 had an artifact +7 Demon Trident of Electrocution. My inner MfIE wept.
I'm sure that whatever bad habits I learned here playing a Troll will help me continue to splat other backgrounds for even more years to come before my next win.
I'm a bit surprised your skills weren't higher since you're with trog and learned no magic, but I suppose skipping vaults:5 might have that effect. They were all still high enough to win, so congrats!
