CiP SpEn^Usk - Seeking build advice to go deeper

Greetings all,

I've been playing Crawl for years but never made it beyond pocketing one or two runes. I've just hit level 12 with a SpEn and I have decent gear and consumables. I'd like some advice on how best to spend my XP from this point onwards and how to best set up a character for the mid-to-late game, because I can usually get to this stage with no problems, but end up dying in one of the harder branches. The main thing I'm not sure about is how how to spend XP and what skills/level of skill I should be aiming for in general.

From what I've read, I understand that stabbers usually need to switch into a different weapon class later on? I picked up a vampiric falchion early on which I thought might have potential, and also just found the +9 hand axe of Causality {holy, +Rage rC+ Int+6} - but not sure how good that is.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Do Lair and Orc normally: use Hexes to stab most monsters and run away from anything you can't handle. Train Fighting and Dodging, and some Invocations; the rest are high enough that you can turn them off (maybe train a little bit of ice to get more power on Ensorcelled Hibernation). You can also start training Necromancy if you like; zombies are good. But it's often not necessary; you can do Lair and Orc with the starting Enchanter book alone.

At that point, you'll have more options on what to do next. For Uskayaw, you ideally need a fair bit of Invocations. Options will probably include some Necromancy; but worry about that when you get there. You'll also have a wider variety of weapons to choose from.

Post a character dump after you clear Lair and Orc; you might get more concrete advice then.
