CIP MiBe Could this be the one? (Apparently not. YASD)

Trying to get my first win (3 rune). Really hoping this'll be the one, I got to Zot:1 once in an earlier version with a MeDK. That was a while ago but this guy feels subjectively stronger.

I'm a Minotaur focused on Maces with branching out into Evocations and Slings. My thinking with Evocations was I'd use that evokable blink sling as an escape although I haven't done so yet and I'm not sure how reliable it is. Right now I've got both slings and maces and min needed for delay and shields at 15, so I'm just training armour and fighting.

Finished Shoals and Spider (and Lair and Orc) and have done first four floors of Vaults. Plan is to finish the depths, maybe do the first two floors of Elf, then Vaults:5 and Zot.

Mostly asking if I should be using different equipment (yes I've ctrl- f'ed for different shields, hats, boots. There aren't any). And if I should be training skills differently. And any other advice I guess for first win.

1. skills: the high levels (>20) are extremely expensive for little gain (unless you have something in mind like mindelay for exec. axe)
Your armour skill is at 25.6, dodging at 2.2.
Stop training armour and skill dodging instead (focus)
if you ever think about skilling armour again:
- how about getting shields to 25 instead (large shields)
- how about great mace (2-handed)
Not that I advise you to do that, it's just that 25.6 in armour is high at that stage

2. resists
Reflection is nice to have with a shield but you have no F+ and only Mr+
I would swap the amulet for F+,C++
Put on ring of prot. from magic instead of prot. cold
Is there another ring of prot.magic ? I would equip that, too, instead of dex+2
Mr+++ (or Mr++++, depends on the diff between them) is wanted for areas with % to get abyssed/paralyzed
Check with 'X' and 'v' on a monster to see what % their spells have on you.
Mr can be substituted by trogs hand but this requires you to act before any other one acts which is not a given

Skilling:
The rest of your skills are fine, but your dodging is too low. Being in plate armour doesn't mean that you shouldn't train dodging.
Other skills to be trained are: slings to 14 to reach min-delay for fustibalus, and a bit more evo (later on).

So I would turn off everything except dodging and slings, and focus dodging. Once I reach min-delay for slings, I would replace slings with evo (keeping dodging focused). Train dex on level ups.

Items:
Wear MR+ ring instead of ring of +2 dex. Ideally, you want at least one more source of MR (so it might be a good idea to wear the MR+ plate as well). But you can get away with MR++ for a while if you use Trog's Hand carefully (around monsters that paralyze/banish)
Use your enchant armour scrolls on your auxiliary armour (cloaks, boots, gloves, hats). If you don't want to use all of the scrolls, use at least half of them. Dying with enchant scrolls in your inventory is bad.
Use your identify scrolls on your wands.
You should have other hex wands lying around. Confusion, paralysis, polymorph, disintegration are all useful. Also, wand of acid, lightning and iceblast are useful offensively. You have recharging scrolls for empty wands.
I would keep wearing the reflection amulet, but swapping it for the amulet with resists is possible.

Misc:
You seem to be carrying too much junk. Drop two out of three of the following: meat rations, bread rations and royal jellies. You can keep beef jerkies for the cases when you need a quick snack in the middle of a battle. Drop the +5 antimagic eveningstar because it's identical to your other weapon. Drop the artifact fustibalus (because it has *Contam, you can't switch weapons if you wield it). Drop most of the slings (perhaps keep the +Blink one). Drop the dex and strength ring, and perhaps the flight ring as well (you have lots of potions of flight).
Replace the inventory space with wands or other evokables (you should have found something useful by now).
With MR+++ you can clear Elf, if you want, though it's not mandatory. Just be careful of the end vault in Elf:3; lure monsters out gradually. You should at least peek into Elf, because you can often find shops there.

Ok thanks, I will do that when I get home. I'm curious why you recommend dropping the eveningstar over the demon whip? I was under the impression eveningstar's were better in general.

I'd heard about training a mix of dodging and armour even when in heavy armour but somehow forgot about it for this guy. Magic ring was usually my default but switched it out for cold due to a ice dragon earlier. I'll consider making the +MR armour my default, I liked the other because of it's higher enchantment but I also don't want to get banished.

I've been dealing with inventory space constraints for a while and definitely have left some ok wands lying around. Good to think of dropping the food; early on it's so scarce but you're right I don't need it now.

Update on where I'm at having just finished Vaults:5 (which was super hard and brought me close to death quite a few times). Prior to that I'd finished Depths, then done first two floors of Elf except Hall of Blades, took a portal to desolation of salt and did that too.

I've got some artifact jewelry I'm wearing. The +9 strength/SeeInv seems like the one to swap out for specifc resistances when needed. Plan to wear my MR+ armor going forward unless I duck into the Crypt, where I'd wear the rN+. I have the rN one of because random shit kept draining me. Accidentally overtrained slings past 14 but that's hopefully ok.

Plan going forward is to poke around in Zot, and if it's too hard do a little Crypt. I've never been to Abyss (not technically true 'never been there by choice' I should say) or Slime and from what I've read could probably do the first floor of those if I need more xp/loot.

Does this guy seem ascendable as is or do i need more stuff/skills?

Also in terms of evokables I have found some phials of floods, at least one fan of gales, disc of storms and phantasm mirror. Would those be more worthwhile then my other wands (and I know I need to drop another food item)

The character is strong enough to ascend, but if you want to over-prepare, you can try peeking into Crypt. Slime isn't good because there's no loot until the last floor, and you can get mutated there. Abyss is boring; I wouldn't go there voluntarily.

For Zot, have rF+ in general; for handling orbs of fire, have rF++. You should have MR+++ in general as well (use Trog's Hand as well against ancient liches if you're paranoid). You only need rElec for electric golems. You can use hex wands on draconians if required. Also keep some cure mutation potions for emergencies; you don't want teleportitis on Zot:5.

Phial of floods, fan of gales, sack of spiders, box of beasts and phantom mirrors are all useful. The former two don't stack, the latter three do. Disc of storms is useful but dangerous, so I would not use it.

If you want room in inventory, you can drop the dex ring, the protection ring, the rc+ ring and the potions of brilliance. You can also drop one paralysis wand and come back to it if you need it. You can also drop the stones and rely exclusively on sling bullets from now on; you have enough to finish the game.

A +4 fustibalus of freezing does more damage than a +8 hunting sling of venom.

Use at least some of your enchant armour scrolls on your shield.

Interface tip: if you keep your main weapon in slot "a" and ranged weapon in slot "b", you can easily switch between them by using the ' (single quote) key. You can adjust slot letters using the "=" key.

So it started when I picked up an unidentified potion. I didn't have an id scrolls but I thought to myself "oh when you are quaff iding potions on D1 you quaffed potion of cure mutation, and you've definitely ided potion of mutation and degeneracy. So this must be a potion of experience. Spoiler I was remembering something from an earlier game, and it was cure mutation. Took away my rank in mut resistance, which would've been handy in Zot.

First OOF I met (Zot2) I fought and payed close attention to my health but not so much to my mutations. It worked me over good, including teleportitis, which would be my death. Got banished to abyss, where I got my Int lowered to 0, then fought back to a positive value, then lowered again to -1. Escaped Abyss in this brainless state. Ctrl-fed for potion of cure mutation but nope. Decided to tough it out, got down to Zot:5 but eventually got teleported next to 3 orb guardians and a moth of wrath. Killed the moth, but not before it berserked everyone. My own wildly uninformed opinion is that moth induced wrath should end on death of moth. Anyway, probably could have been better about using panic buttons at the end there, but I think really when I thugged it out with the first OoF and got teleportitis that was the death of me.

I'm surprisingly non-upset about losing this guy so close to the end. A few years ago I'd be super pissed/sad, now not so much

I think I'm going to play around with other characters for a bit. I'm a little bored of Minotaurs Berserkers right now. Tempted to keep running them til I get that first win, and may in fact go back to that, we'll see

You can type "\" to see which potions are unidentified. If it's the last unidentified potion, it will be identified automatically.

Moths of wrath have very low HD and low MR, you can polymorph or confuse them.

You had lots of options left before you died. You were not hasted or berserked, had no buffs active like might/agility. Also, you had 5 scrolls of blinking, 7 scrolls of teleport, 3 scrolls of summoning and multiple heal wounds. In general, you should never die with scrolls of blinking in your inventory. I see you had blurry vision mutation, so even blinking might not have saved you. With so many mutations, it was not a good idea to do Zot:5.

If you want to try a different type of character, DrCj is good.

Ok thanks yeah. I definitely could have quaffed might and/or berserked. I actually did try to read my blinking scroll I think but blurry vision messed it up. I also did a heal wounds but then immediately got hit for as much damage the next turn (seems to be what always happens with heal wounds in critical situations). I was already somewhat injured when I got teleported next to the guardians and I think I'd more or less given up at that point. But yeah I could have survived a little longer with more panic buttons, somewhat skeptical I could have cleared the Orb chamber with teleportitis active, but maybe

Also it might be a good idea to visit several floors of ziggurat when you need to cure mutations, teleportitis is not a big deal on small floors.

Here's another interesting possibility to keep in mind for the future: equip a -Tele artifact. I noticed the ring "Daygroiku" {-Tele rElec Int+2 Slay+5 SInv}, which is an excellent ring if you ignore the -Tele. In Zot, all teleports are delayed 5-8 turns, and blinking is uncontrolled, so teleportation is a much less reliable escape method than it is elsewhere, and teleportitis will almost certainly get you killed on Zot:5. Besides, if you really need to, you can take it off in only 5 aut (half the time it takes you to move one tile.)
