YASD- An exercise in insanity

For some reason, I decided I wanted to experiment with Jiyva and his ridiculous piles of mutations. So I rolled a TrMo, on the logic that trolls don't need anything jellies might eat, and I might be able to lean on the arrow keys and actually make it to the slime pits if the altar didn't spawn earlier. Not that I expected to survive that long.

So learn on the arrow keys I did, killing and eating everything in my path, really playing sorta carelessly, until I hit the temple. Unsurprisingly, no Jiyva. So I saved, planning to think on what god to come back to, and start playing my Troll as if he were a viable character. I returned later, weighing in my mind the merits of trying to fill my limited slots with Oka gifts before dealing with his wrath, or going to forgiving Ely to try the TrHe I keep hearing about... and then I realized I had saved directly in front of an altar of Xom.

I froze. Rational, strategic thoughts struggled against a sudden, insane, suicidal, and completely compelling impulse. Why play safe, why wait for mutations and power, when all the might of insanity and chaos made manifest could be mine now? Why die in pointless mundanity, when I could die in triumphant, resplendent glory? Seconds later, a new Xomite left the temple- screaming.

From this point on I played really recklessly. I thought I was being careless before, relying on my trollishness to power through everything; but when I threw care to the wind and embraced Xom, I did so wholeheartedly. I flew through floors, mashed arrows through monsters, test ID-ed everything, including wands on myself, I never stopped to heal, charged out of halls to fight crowds in the open- I left everything to chance and played as fast as I could. And I did so with an amulet of faith, which meant Xom was firing off even faster.

What really surprised me, and what promoted me to post this, is the fact that it worked. I survived suicidal charges and open room brawls with Sigmund and Menkaure. Xom didn't try to kill me- in fact nearly his first action was to gift me a wand of healing! I've never seen him so well behaved- almost every action was helpful or negligible. He didn't try to outright kill me once! In the end Grum got me with a lucky wand of paralysis. I must say I'm a little disappointed- getting killed by the RNG before Xom could do the job.

Re: YASD- An exercise in insanity

My mouse slipped during character creation and I ended up with a Troll priest of Zin. Rather than (Q)uit him, I decided to kill it by taking every downward staircase I could as soon as I found it, fighting only when something got in my way. Nine levels down and still xp level two, he ran into the most impressive artifact robe I had ever seen. I immediately sobered up and tried to retreat to the first level to do things properly in my shiny shiny robes. Promptly boxed into a corridor by orc warriors and hacked to bits.

Re: YASD- An exercise in insanity

Going for the Pantheon banner in the last tourney, it came time to choose Xom, so I went with a TrMo and dived for the Temple. Fully expecting to die after another level or two, I ended up making it as far as halfway through Lair before getting squished.

My best games with Xom have been when I didn't try hard.

Re: YASD- An exercise in insanity

Jiyva altar never appears in the Temple (at least in 0.7).
Sometimes it might appear in the dungeon, in the Lair or in the Pits.

There is always one on the last level of the Pits (in the middle) I believe.

Because he rewards you for doing a bunch of stuff that normally you wouldn't do, because it'll get you killed.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
