CIP DDNe^Makh now YASD on Zot:5

This character has finished Swamp, Snake, Slime, Elf and Crypt. I would like to get the silver and abyssal runes also, and have no interest in doing extended. I feel fairly confident I can do Vault:5 with a Death Channel/Simulacrum/Animate Dead snowball, but Abyss is another matter entirely. I had a horrible time with shining eyes in Slime, unlike any other time I've done that branch. I started with two !CureMut, and they are gone (I wasted the first one in retrospect) and now have frail. I also found in Slime that not having corpses really did affect my overall offense. Should I try Abyss, or settle for four runes? (One more note on the dump below, I've not sorted through Crypt loot yet, mainly the rings.)

11 Armour skill and 20 str don't do much with a +0 robe. Perhaps upgrade to something like ring mail or dragon armour? The rC+ from the robe isn't important.

Oh yes, totally. I had the rC+ after azure jellies kicked my butt on my first foray into Slime, and just forgot to switch it for Crypt 3 (I'd done Crypt 1-2 before Slime). But at the same time, with the armours I have on hand, Ozo's + robe/leather is better than say ice dragons scales, because I get the same AC with higher EV and better spell success. The armour skill was trained earlier when I was using quickdragon scales for MR. I'm leaning towards a +3 leather {MP+9 Dex+3} as the best option I have now. I did a bunch of gallivanting around wear-IDing runed ring and scale mails before Slime, and all I got out of it was piety decay.

One more question. I have access to a +9 lajatang of speed. Should I use this instead of the +9 vampiric lajatang? If this was any other species ^Makh, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But I don't have enough experience with DD to evaluate vampiric's value to it, whether Makh alone is enough healing. Vaults:5 is next.

game is trivial if youre mostly >80 % hp, which vampiric does for you

if you have a super tanky deep dwarf (better defs than yours) and a decent AXE makhleb healing can manage that alone, but this char doesnt look like it yet.

So for this particular character, DD needs the vamp brand even with Makh because 1) it takes damage more often because of the lower defenses which enable spellcasting and 2) the lajatang doesn't cleave so I'm killing mobs in series instead of in parallel, meaning Makh rewards me with HP less frequently. Both of those reasons make sense; thank you.

I certainly don't regret committing to the lajatang, IIRC it was the first vampiric weapon I'd found--in early Lair no less, when I'd barely started training weapons after getting Necromancy up to speed--and a good base type to boot. I remain puzzled though by Sandman's preference for vampiric over speed for non-DD and/or non-Makh characters. [edit] And I've certainly come close to dying plenty with this character, even with the vamp laj. But it's my first DD to get past mid-Lair, so I suppose there's a learning curve before I achieve invulnerability (that's not as sarcastic as it may sound, I gather that DD played right can be as close as Crawl gets to unkillable).

1) DD in heavy armour would benefit from vampiric even more because it would rarely cast spells
2) Vampiric Executioner's axe with DD of Makhleb is the most hilarious combo of the game. You can literally play with closed eyes.

But isn't being weaker (as far as defenses are concerned) exactly why this present character needs vampiricism? So vamp is more important for spellcasters, than for melee dudes. Or did I just miss the memo that DD must have cleaving? It's Axes apt certainly doens't scream it like HO's does.

Okay, I keep thinking about this. Tell me please if I'm on the right track. Vampiric is a good brand if its healing keeps you above the damage curve because your high defenses limit the damage you take. But if vampiric is not enough to keep you ahead of the damage curve by its healing alone, then you are better off with a brand that has additional damage and staying ahead of the damage curve by killing stuff more quickly instead. I think about my only character that won with vampiric, HOAK with a war axe: it had stellar defenses. Vampiric is still best for this particular character, even with its lower defenses, solely because the race is DD.

I think I get it now. Previously, I thought of vampiric as just "heal-on-kill". But giving up the extra brand damage is significant, something I was getting close to when I was comparing it to the speed lajatang. Now I understand the circumstances that make vampiric shine.

YASD on Zot:5. Vaults:5 was a breeze, but I had trouble with Orbs of Fire and made some tactical mistakes. Another DDNe next. This time I'll use necromancy to get to Makhleb, then transition into melee in Lair and go tanky.

Good plan.

For reference, the chances of floor weapons having the vampiric brand:
Axes: 5%
Maces & flails: whip 5%, morningstar 2%, eveningstar 2%, demon whip 7%, others 0%
Polearms: spear 5%, demon trident 7%, others 5%.
Short blades: dagger 4%, others 4%.
Long blades: demon blade 7%, others 4%.
Staves: quarterstaff 0%, lajatang 12%.

The justification comment is interesting.

  1) The main purpose of weapon brand distribution varying across weapon type
     is to help to balance the different weapon skills against each other -
     staves and short blades getting better brands as partial compensation for
     their other drawbacks, for instance. It is true that we have other knobs
     that we also use to balance different weapon types, but they don't all
     affect things in the same way. For instance, lajatangs having very good
     brands on average partially compensates for the rarity of good staves in a
     different way from how raising their base damage would - it means that

     like a lajatang of speed or elec or pain is one of the ways that players

     different weapon skills more individual feel. For instance, if you play a

     then when you switch to axes for a few games you'll actually find vamp
     axes with some regularity and use them and be excited about that.
     This isn't a particularly strong effect with the current distributions -
     among the four "normal" weapon skills (axes/maces/polearms/longblades),
     only the m&f distribution is particularly distinctive. But it is
     definitely a noticeable effect if you play 5 non-maces games in a row and
     follow up with 5 maces games, and it contributes to making maces feel more
     distinct.
     They could probably be simplified to a certain extent (only one set of
     brands per weapon skill, for example), but there is a reason not to
     simplify them down to just one table.

To address #1, it seems like a single good-brand knob (increase odds of elec, pain, etc) would be simpler.
