CIP: DEWz^Kiku wondering whether to go Snake or Shoals first

I have a DEWz that got lucky with an early D2 Kiku altar and some good book drops which gave me a solid direction towards summoning once I go to the late game. To put it simply, things have been going fine for this pale elf so far. Unfortunately, I went through all the easy portions of the dungeon and now need to pick between Shoals and Snake, two branches that make even my more powerful characters quiver. I do have access to Shadow Creatures, Mana Vipers, and Kiku support; however, the spike damage these places can dish out do have me a bit apprehensive since I'm controlling a character with sub-100 health. I was thinking of tackling Shoals first since allies and Repel Missiles should keep me safe enough from all the Javelin tossing while Shadow Creatures and derived undead should be able to take care of enemies who mesmerize me. I rather not deal with smite-targeted arrows with sub-100 health.

Also, I know that Shadow Creatures is a good spell in Depths and Zot, but how does the spell fare in Snake, Shoals, and Vaults? I haven't played summoners too much, so I don't have too much experience using that spell in earlier areas.

In addition, what would make for a good third rune for this character? I was thinking of doing Vaults, but I'm a bit afraid that this character might be overwhelmed even with Staff of Energy support. I don't really have the rC to do Slime, and the Abyss would probably not bode too well for this character who doesn't enjoy protracted conflicts with limited time to rest.

Snake will be much easier. You overtrained spellcasting IMHO, also it's probably better to put remaining bonus stats in either Dex (if you stay in robe) or Str (if you go for MDS or ring mail). Kiku characters are better played as hybrids IMHO.

Edit. I wouldn't worry about 3rd rune yet, you still have Vaults 1-4, Crypt, Elf and Depths to explore.

I would wear wiz ring instead of stealth. It'll save you some MP and I don't think the stealth bonus is so important at this point. No better rings are available, I assume?

For a low HP character with spammable allies, I prefer resists over AC. I guess I will stick with the robe of fire resist for now and pump up my staves, fighting, and EV. Hopefully I eventually come across a ?acq so I can get myself an lajatang. Maybe a few more to get access to better jewelry, /hw, and /haste. I mainly invested into spellcasting to get Mana Vipers, Simulacrum, and Shadow Creatures castable. Seeing as I now have those spells memorized, I don't forsee myself training the skill unless I find something like Death Channel or XXX. Might also remove Mephitic Cloud to make room for either Recall or Aura of Abjuration.

RNG hasn't been kind to me in terms of jewelry. The jewelry I have on this character is the only ones even worth inventory space. I did wear the wizardry ring, but the only major difference it gave was reducing Shadow Creatures from 8% to 4%. I might just wear it anyway since stealth isn't so useful to this character anymore.

Did not see Rpois so Parrow is a really ugly thing. Mostly mitigated by optimal play but that just causes death via cntrl+Q.

Between terrible terrain, nets and mesmerisation, Shoals is almost always more likely to be more difficult (i.e. create a dangerous situation)

Did I mention the terrain is terrible?

I often find shoals:1-3 easier than snake:1-3. Shoals:4 is way harder though, and if it happens to be that "open" variant, then even elf:3 should be easier.

Snake brings constriction shutting down regular walk away escape, polearm attacks that may reach past a line of summons (but merfolk do that too), and Guardian Serpents dropping a whole gaggle on top of you sooner or later. It will tend to mug you in melee left and right, as much as the scattered archers are a pain. On the other hand, Shoals can surprise from a distance consistently and has fewer choke points...

I agree you've gotta watch it with Shoals, especially Shoals 4.

A couple days back with another DeCj^Veh, I pretty much breezed through Shoals 1-3... I had around 16 EV, similar AC and MR to what you (OP) have, Bolt of Fire on main gun but only Fireball for AOE (which I find mediocre at least around 10-15 Fire+Conj). So I step onto Shoals 4, open the first vault 8 paces or so from the stairs, and there's a whole pack of 9 or so merfolk etc. including javilineers, acquamancers, and their friend that summons water ghosts. They waltzed right through a little flame cloud I set in the doorway hoping to contain them (silly me) and spread out faster than expected. During the first turn of combat, more missile throwers also appeared from the other direction in the water. Total fusillade. I might have forgotten to refresh my new Deflect Missiles in the middle of all that (ugh!) but still... It was over in about 3 turns. :o

For balance though, since you have to make a choice and if you're feeling sure you have much better dodge/cast than melee defense, you could very carefully try some upper levels of Shoals (with plenty of summons up at each provocation, and escape tools ready) - and hope for a shop with something to "shore up" your defenses a bit. Very bad pun there, "shoring" in Shoals you see. :evil: Just avoid packs and possible blind ambush areas like the plague...
