In my recent newbie efforts to get my second Crawl rune ever, I have been playing Summoners, and finally seem to have got one off the ground. Summoners should be easy - you can stay out of danger whilst your summons do the hard work, and get XP just for abandoning a bunch of imps to an orc pack whilst you run away out of LoS. It barely seems fair... Also, the spells are such fun, and it feels like the starting spells can take you an incredibly long way.
I mainly play human or vampire summoners, I don't know why, and this guy is of the bat loving persuasion. I just cleared Snake 1 to see if I could, and it went ok... Ice beasts rock basically, and as Vehumet finished gifting me summons books whilst I cleared Lair (dire elephants yay), I have also been experimenting with ugly things, which certainly did for those nellies.
I guess I should do a bit more of Orc (tasty tasty orc blood, hmmm), dive the dungeon a bit, and come back to Snake and Shoals a bit later, but meanwhile, is it worth battling against my -3 aptitude to learn some conjurations? Vehumet just gave me the first Conj book, and having some good ice based ranged attack feels like it would be handy... I think there is also a book shop upstairs someplace, I should get blink and deflect missiles I suppose (had to burn a few teleport scrollls on the dire nellies).
