Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You are partially covered in rugged brown scales. (AC +1, +3% HP)

I've always liked high elves because they're great for my favourite non-transmuter play style: skalds. The 0.19 addition of riposte (fun!) was almost purpose-built for HEs, so I must say I was a bit surprised to find out that HEs were about to get the axe in 0.20.

HEs have nice apts for a skald: +2 LBl, +2 Chrm, +1 Spc. They also have high attributes, and are balanced by -10% in both HP and XP gain. HP-10% is noticeable, but still good enough for a melee-oriented build. High attributes makes it possible to be formidable in melee, wear good armour, and be able to cast high-level spells, the best one being Tornado, and HEs have a +2 apt in Air Magic for that.

With a bit of luck in finding Str+ and Int+ items, HEs can wear quite heavy armour and be able to cast Tornado early enough to make a difference even in a 3-rune game, let alone in a 15-rune one.

My fav HE build is a skald of Okawaru, switching to Makhleb after Tornado is castable. Oka gifted this char the triple swords of both elec and holy wrath. Pretty neat. I switched to Makh when I had both Tornado and Necromutation and started busting Zigs.

This is my first char who got to wear the orangle crystal plate armour and who was able to cast 9th-level spells at 1% fail in it, achievement unlocked, eh? The benefit of the OCPA is of course the combination of good AC, Archmagi, and Clarity, the latter being a requirement for being able to effectively channel MP in lichform using either the crystal ball or the staff of Wucad Mu. Before OCPA, after the 3rd zig or so, I used the combo of the amulet of Four Winds + the Hat of the High Council + pearl dragon scales. But the hat got the axe as well for being "uninteresting", a rationale I also have problems with.

With no HE in the next version, what other combo would be good for a build like this? Also, the removal of the hasting and healing wands nerfs a lichform zigbuster to the extent of making it unviable. The removal of Stasis was bad enough, because the main way of getting a char like this killed in a zig is due to paralysis.

MfSk is the closest one can get to HESk, probably.

They have 10 pp more HP, but their Air apt make them impossible to get earlyish Tornado, so that particular build is out. Also, worse attributes. So it's like comparing a human to most builds: yeah, somewhat similar but not quite.

MfSk + polearms is the best skald combo though, because your spectral bardiche will help you even from behind your back. Used it on my first to 15-runers who weren't even Mf.

Unfortunately the devs seem to incorrectly think that having two species which share some overlap with a third is the same as being redundant. They seem to have a poor understanding of set theory.

VpSk is close to HESk. MfSk is much stroger.
