It also has the unique ability to reflect things that might otherwise hit you. Would you trade it for the following:

Str+7 would improve the damage output, but at Str:22 it's quite enough as it is. It'd also improve SH, but would require training more Shd. UC being at 22 + Oka's Heroism to bring it up to 27, there are not many other skills to train apart from Fighting for more HP.

Needless to say, the randart is better, because you are kinda warrior and need high SH, and Str+7 is crazy boost for Statue form UC.

Also, warlock's mirror is not reliable because it's unique reflect ability also checks SH, which must be small as the item is buckler-based.

Also, shield's atk speed/ev/acc penalty is not that harsh.

In case when the penalties max out, like shield skill lv 0 and you're wielding a large shield,
it drags +0.17 turn for atk in average. = mean of distrib defined as minimum of two i.i.d U(0, 0.5)

I somewhat disagree about statuepodes *needing* SH, superb melee damage and good AC/EV is quite enough even without a shield, but more defenses don't hurt of course.

But Str is especially good as a statue and a good offense is the best defense so I'll switch.

Out of curiosity, I ran an fsim vs death yak with an identical char:

Freaking 113 AvEffDam at UC:27 (with Heroism). Make it double with Finesse. Statuepodes are pretty freaking powerful in melee.

No wonder I rarely use any other spells with them, what's the point?

In general for a melee Op I would say more shield and str is better than warlock's mirror special reflection for two reasons:

1) the 10 extra shield you are getting is a big deal for Op. Your 34EV + 17Sh is right around the point where you can melee a Gold Dragon fine and especially for unarmed (and even more for Op due to tentacle slap/squeeze) the 15 more str you have is considerably less time you spend in melee as well.

2) as an Op you have no armor restriction and typically get decent int from the 10 start and you just invariably pick up jewelry with int even when not looking for, therefore you can develop alternate tactics to replace the reflect effect. Like getting MR or learning shadow creatures to block mutation etc etc.

You should be reaching the point where your Op feels more like a normal species and possibly even a little puzzled by how tough it now is.

Freaking 113 AvEffDam at UC:27 (with Heroism). Make it double with Finesse. Statuepodes are pretty freaking powerful in melee.

No wonder I rarely use any other spells with them, what's the point?


Statuepode is extremely strong, but at UC 27 with 34 str and 35 EV and say 25 SH even a normal Op can tear through most things.

Tentacle slap and squeeze can both hit for !! hits with statuepode. Statuepode normal attack can easily hit for over 100 damage. Two !! hits is something like 40 damage. Add in constriction on 37 str. Its a lot of damage. The Op auxiliaries proc at liek 50% ad 66% too.

I have actually come to the conclusion that people often over rely on statuepode, there is no point in being slow when you one or two shot things anyway. On hard bosses there is an obvious difference and you certainly want to be statue or whatever, but try running around as normal Op with good defense in depths or whatever.

I have killed mnoleg without much problem as melee necro-pode.

I don't think it's over-reliance. Good AC + ~double damage per turn is just too good to pass. In extended, taking 50% less damage from torment makes almost any situtation tabbable with the barest regard to positioning. High enough damage output solves every problem in the game by itself.

Being slow has little impact on the game when your melee attack is at 0.75 speed and you kill every monster in a hit or two.

V:5 was a breeze. Strategy: tab through everything, cast AS on corpses. I put on a crappy *Contam ring though. 3 !curemuts, maybe I should get rid of it.

2/15. I always postpone Shoals but it's the next logical place to go. For Slime, no Airstrike, which is my usual tool of handling shining eyes from behind LOS. 3 !curemuts should be enough, I always get a crappy mut or two from there.

Or if I find Tornado, I might get distracted by Makh+zigbusting like I did with my previous Op.
