My character might not be the best example because of how strong they were after Lair and especially Elf, but I still feel like I played enough with Elyvilon to come to the conclusion that they are underrated. Not in the sense that nobody talks about them, but in the sense that people hype on about Fedhas, Trog, and Kiku way more. It really can't be overstated how good Elyvilon is.

Pacification works on a ridiculous number of enemies and has a very good success rate at modest invocations (around 10 to 12). Creatures with animal or lower intelligence (that are not mindless) are even easier to pacify, letting you simply pick off Hydras and Mambas with just a few key strokes. I can't think of a single other time I have trivialized those monsters as soon as I started running into them.

You can't pacify everything, but it's essentially a fairly accurate, smite-targetted, entire LoS ranged instant death spell that has a chance of distracting other enemies (neutrals become targets). Even though you can't spam pacification attempts like no tomorrow, Ely is still top tier for Lair, no doubt about it. Other notable good pacification targets that came up during my game were Very Ugly Things and Titans, among many, many others. It takes several attempts sometimes, so don't be that dummy that only uses it in an emergency. Piety is a renewable resource.

Speaking of which, Greater Healing is extremely cheap for how strong it is and is useful literally everywhere. In later sections I would heal around 30 damage in a single turn (average 37 at max invo) and I could use it multiple times in rapid succession if I ever got worried. Ely gives piety for discovering new areas, which makes it a pretty much limitless resource in Abyss and Pan and still very very cheap in Hell. It doesn't list it in the morgue, but I don't think I quaffed a single potion of heal wounds during the entire game nor did I use either of the wands that were in my possession.

Divine Vigour is just really really strong. Training invo to 12 gives +25% HP and MP. In earlier sections of the game I would regularly see my health shoot up a solid 70 points. At max invocations it's +50%. In extended I managed to get my Op to have over 600 HP as a berserked statuepode with divine vigour, meaning I had more HP than every hell or pan lord I fought except Antaeus, a fact which changed very shortly after the battle started. ; )

Lastly, Ely has purification. It's not as amazing as her other abilities, being mostly duplicated by pots of curing, but it does heal all lost stats without the player having to kill tons and tons of monsters. It also heals slow, which came in handy more than a handful of times.

I didn't do this because I didn't realize it until now, but you can literally put on a ward that prevents a lethal blow without any negative drawbacks in all extended areas (except for the piety loss... AFTER it activates). According to the bot in the discord chat, Elyvilon only gives penance for hurting natural monsters which means demons and undead should be free reign. I would assume it would also be solid in Zot when fighting OoFs.

Elyvilon doesn't solve every problem, but they solve all of your worst ones. You get an instant death spell that works everywhere on everything that isn't a unique, you get a large quantity of constantly replenishing pots of heal wounds, and you get a jacked up HP bar on demand. Ely has no low points in any section of the game other than when you still have low invocations and piety (which is the case with most gods); this god is extremely strong everywhere else.

The only downside to Ely is that you can't use Necromancy, which could hurt some areas but I really didn't miss it one bit other than Mnoleg and OoFs (and it's just malmutate, I'll live, I really will). Besides, Necromancy is just a cheap way of having a lot of different options. Invocations is the same way in this specific instance and was worth every point I put into it.

Oh, you can make angels that shoot blessed fire cry. Ha, fuck you angels. You can also kill apis without retribution, though for role playing reasons I tried to avoid doing this any more than I had to.

Besides that, Statue Form is, as usual, absolutely crucial for octopodes. You can win without it but it's almost always optimal to get it online if you have it, especially if you start as a transmuter who can really make use of the bonus UC damage and who already has skill points towards transmutations.

Re: OpTm^Ely 15 rune. How is Ely not considered the best god

Ely requires high Invo for successful pacification while with Fedhas and Trog you don't need to train any extra skills and Kiku can give you Animate Skeleton before Lair. Also you started using her abilities at XL 10, when the hardest part of the game is already over, at least the hardest part for OpTm.

Re: OpTm^Ely 15 rune. How is Ely not considered the best god

Guess that's kinda valid. But the hardest part about OpTm is the first few floors where you (most likely) don't have a god so that's kinda moot. I find lair way more scary than anything in the first 9 floors of the dungeon.

Although 10 invo isn't high. That's a 69% success chance on Hydras.

Why is animate skeleton considered so good? I hear a lot about it but I don't get it. It's just a crappy summon isn't it?

You answered it already ;) Hydra skeleton will annihilate everything.
Also you can kill one yak, animate it in the same fight and continue fighting, kill one more, animate it too. Snowball effect.

How do you exactly do that? I mean in order to animate it you have to stay on the corpse tile, and during a fight it requires you to move and get some free hit instead of holding position and keep fighting, or there is some tactic I am not aware of? Or it's ok to get some free hit for the skelly summon?

well I suppose that if I start running in circle vs yak with an unarmored toon I'll be almost dead at the end of the circle, but I might be wrong...

Running in circle does not mean here 'run around the yak' but 'run around some dungeon features so that you get to the corpse'. If you started the run while the yak was (at least) one step from next to you, you should be able to get to the corpse and cast the spell without taking extra hits (bar energy randomization).

There's a reason why I don't subscribe to the mainstream belief that Elyvilon is a 'good' god. So-called 'pacify' is actually 'erase loyalty'. Arrange a traffic jam then pacify something inside it - laugh at the expense of missed EXP.
