CIP: not your typical HEWz

quick background:
been playing crawl for a few months and watching people play online trying to learn,my first wins have been:

MDDK of yred/lugonu/jiyva 3 runes (barely made it)
HaHu of Okawaku 5 runes (easy win slinging everything with steel+silver bullets)
DDEE of Elyvilon 8 runes (would of tried 15 runes but got mutated to much and called it a day,Ely is so underrated)

so ive been wanting to play a nuking mage for a while after watching all those pros pwning ziggurats with their tornados and icefire stroms,i want to abuse tornado at least once before it gets nerfed to oblivion in 0.9 but all my HECj have splatted horribly,cant deal with the low HP and crappy defenses.

switching from HECj to HEWz really improved my survivability and i finally got a great char going on.

found a very early dagger of venom and just spammed imps + poison to pwn the early game,worshipped vehumet but since i had higher summoning skill he only gave me the summoning books DOH!

summon demon + meph cloud + poison cloud made the orc mines,elven halls,swamp and shoals a cake walk.

so i just found these manuals of FIGHTING and SHIELDs lying around and i got 2 choices now:

1-do i switch to a melee crusader type with demon spam?
or
2-amnesia all my summoning related skills and start victory dancing my air/ice/fire skills so i can finally be a regular squishy mage with tornado abuse?
or
3-ignore the -1 summoning aptitute and just go balls out nuts summoning horrible things and tentacles,i got wizardry and can already cast the lv7 summoning at excelent.

other notes:
*got tons of enchant weapon scrolls and branded swords lying around,including crazy yuif chaos staff,is it worth it?
*none of my 20+ books has swiftness + flight =(
*i have full fire and ice inmunity,but no Rmut,should i still try going to hell/abyss?

Couple of comments

manuals won't help until you get some XP in the pool

-1 on summoning doesn't affect your abilities just the amount of XP to get the skill - and you already have 13 summoning - would be a shame to waste it

Update:
im up to 7 runes now (swamp,shoals,vaults,abyss,slime,coc,geh)

played most of the midgame spamming summon demon/poison cloud/ignite poison with all my skills turned off and finally managed to get my hands on max power tornado.

it really is the broken skill i expected,but i know many players have splatted for thinking they are invincible with it.

had my biggest near death experience with Antaeus today,i was expecting to just spam tornado's and escape to the gate if things got to ugly,to my surprise Antaeus FOLLOWED ME outside of hell and i was almost out of MP and it came down to a fist fight with haste+berserk,i was thinking "no way he can survive getting quadraslashed while engulfed in my winds,i can always teleport/blink away" until i realized you CANT USE WANDS AND SCROLLS WHILE BERSERKED! i didnt dare try to run away fearing getting shot down from afar,so i trusted my life to lady luck and barely killed him with 10 HP left,never gonna try that again =(

right now im working on the iron city,but the dispater refuses to move away from the rune vault so i can ninja the rune.

so my questions right now are:
1-is Tartarus,Pan and Tomb doable without necromutation? i imagine ill get tormented to death,still havent found that spell.
2-should i stick to my +9 sabre of speed or enchant a holy blade?will it really make that much diference on these branches? thought speed was the best brand of all.
3-keep using my fragile archmage robe or upgrade to a +8 dragon armour? i can cast most of my spells on excelent if i pile on the wizardry staff and int jewels,spell power vs durability,cant decide
4-mutation roulette yay or nay? got like 60+ mut pots and 10 curemut ones,enough to minimize variance?
5-victory dance evocations until i can safely spam crystal balls? (got no channeling)
6-still bother with summoning even if they die from my own tornado's?

finally managed to ninja the iron city rune,just 1 more hell branch left.

gave summon horrible creatures a try,its very nice since its summons 4~5 meatshields at a time,the butterflies of the late game,the int drain isnt that crippling cause i just go wild spamming them and then eat one of the many royal jellies and res pots when i get to -20ish int.

tried to tackle the tomb and made it to the last floor,torment is too scary and i dont dare tornado those huge mummy mobs for fear of dying from multiple torment and no way im meleeing them either.

working on building my summoning skill to start summoning dragons,i guess the fire breath will be useful for this.

found a distortion scimitar in there,so should i try doing pandemonium now?

Nothing in Pandemonium will be remotely threatening to that character's life, as long as you don't bullishly insist on fighting Pan Lords that prove to have dangerous spells. Controlled Blink would be nice, though, if you have access. The purpose of the distortion weapon is to make returning to the Dungeon somewhat less tedious, not to make it any safer to pass through Pan.

finally took my first trip to pan and almost instantly had another near death experience when a random panlord with icestorm (WTF!?)spawned near me,shattered a lot of my pots and got me under 30 HP,does tornado repel the clouds from fireice storm? that would of saved a lot of pots.

rest of the trip went smoothly,pwned Mloleg and Lom,i wasnt hardcore enough to take on Cerebov so i just lured and ninja'd,Gloorx was dumb enough to teleport away leaving the vault completely open,didnt bother to follow him.

finally found a clear floor and started wielding and unwielding my distortion scimitar,in no time i was banished to the abyss,thank god i didnt get red glow like my last game using distortion weapons

so all thats left is tartarus and the tomb,any advice? im paranoid of splatting in my first realistic 15 rune attempt

you shouldn't have problems in tartarus.
be as paranoid as you can afford in tomb, though. don't use tornado (or cloud/storm spells) unless you know what you're doing, and abuse summons to deal with the death curses. and even so, be careful walking down to tomb:2 or :3 (always haste).
