YASD - Early Poison

I started out a minotaur with the idea I was gonna get him a halberd. Made him a fighter. I start strolling through D1. Find a +2, +4 Elven Spear of Chaos. Finish D1. Climb downstairs. Get hit with a poison dart from a kobold. Retreat upstairs. Rest. See that I'm at 15 health. Quaff my potions. It's agility, brilliance, and something else that wasn't healing. I die from the poison. > .>

Re: YASD - Early Poison

Well. The inspiration was that I had picked up a +4 +4 halberd of chopping or something like that. And was satisfied when I killed most everything in one hit. But I know I know, they're slow and inaccurate and you can't use a shield.

Re: YASD - Early Poison

if you find a sleeping snake, ant, scorpion (not quite for a giant mite), hit 'X' to bring up the map, put an autotravel exclusion on top of it with 'e' and keep autoexploring on the main screen with 'o'. pick up darts, daggers, clubs, and anything you can throw, and don't approach the critter, use whatever ranged weapons you have until it's adjacent. use wands, if you have them (although you shouldn't waste them on snakes, as a general rule). if it's kobolds with blowguns, they likely aren't faster than you, so turn a corner and wait for them to get close. scorpions you can run away from too. and if it's really pissing you off play a ghoul or a naga (or a thirsty vampire or a mummy, but those are tougher early on.) a couple floors later you'll be stronger, and you won't have to worry about poison until killer bees start to show up.

conjurations work too, but i assume you're playing melee characters.

Re: YASD - Early Poison

Thanks for all that. I really just play random characters. I don't take the game THAT seriously. Half the time I'm drinking when I play. ^ -^ I've tried some of that, and sometimes, it's not so bad. This case was kinda unavoidable. I walked down the stairs, first thing that happened was poison dart, I walked back up and died from the poison. > .>
And yeah I don't play Nagas because I like to test my luck a lot. When I get in trouble, I'm not very capable of running with a Naga. :( So far, the last time I died from poison was this, and running into my ghost that had a whip of venom... So it's not so bad, just decided I'd share the my buzzkill. :P

Now if you do have some advice on melee progression of dungeon branches, I'd like to hear that. My last characters took down Lair and Orc, but I went into Elf, and was doing fine, til I met Nikola on Elf 2... With no electric resistance.

But that only depends on the user.
I use a blowguns and a poisoned dart and use my range skills to kill the enemy unwarned.

you ran away from nikola without rElec, not much debate there.
melee characters don't have as much leeway as magic users, but i'm still very flexible order-wise. you do lair whenever you find it, and then either more of the dungeon until it gets too hard, or the mines, or floors 1-4 of snake/swamp/shoals (snake is better with rPois, and for swamp you want clarity or rPois to deal with mephitic cloud). if one gets too tough, try the others. for the elven halls you want see invisible and conservation, but sometimes you have to do without. you can also just skip it. that's my take (and not very useful, i'm afraid), but there's plenty of advice in the wiki too.

it really is very crappy, because it's very slow. check the speed delay, and use '@' in-game to see how fast you can attack with your wielded weapon.
it's also good policy to set 'show_gold_turns' and 'show_real_turns' to true in the config file. you see how many turns the last action took, which helps figure out a few things by yourself.
