A player said "YAVP/YSD/CIP: wow, you won a game of Crawl! Good job! Want a cookie?" so I am posting this just to prove that it is not about cookies only 
I almost died to Minotaur in lab, used 5 zaps of heal wounds and my last scroll of blinking to survive. I restored HP and returned, minotaur didn't notice me this time (despite I forgot to use Heroism) and I picked up all the loot except which was wielded by minotaur. Minotaur was using an amulet so I decided to kill it. Quaffed agility, activated Heroism and Finesse (again forgot to use Ozo Armour but let's pretend that I was smart to have a way to retreat
) and died... The minotaur was hitting me almost every time despite EV 21. Of course I might avoid the death if I knew that Minotaur has attacks of 35 and 20 damage each and I don't even know its accuracy (is it like 80%? too lazy to use fsim to check). Funnily I started to get hit more often after quaffing agility, shows how reliable EV is
