So I heard you liked Yaks (YASD)

Hello. I have recently really gotten into roguelikes in general after trying them briefly 10 years ago. I quickly found this game and decided that I'd get good at it.

Well. After over 100 games and lots of free time wasted pouring over noob-guides and advice on both this forum and the wiki, I can say that I do not suck nearly as bad as I used to. But what prompted me to post this story today was the fact that my most successful character died, and I simply had to tell his tale.

I began as a HEWz. After many fruitless attempts at various classes I discovered that I really, really liked magic. So with a cautious few steps born from countless dead mages I set out to get this orb. Or at least make it past Dungeon Level 8-9, which is where all my best characters met their various ends.

On DL 1 I found a dagger of venom that I liberated from a lone Kobald. In no time at all I had identified all the potions I needed and no longer had to risk drinking a poison potion or some such. I also found more remove curse scrolls than ever before, when usually I was plagued by hoards of curse scrolls. After I found a ring of Teleport Control I quickly grew very suspicious, as every other time I'd gotten lucky at the beginning I'd meet some horrible monstrosity I had never seven before previously. Like an Iron Devil or something.

Anyway, a few floors later I liberated from Edmund a +0 leather armor of fire resistance, found a cloak, a +1 hat, some boots and gloves as well as a wand of paralysis, and an amulet of warding. Exactly as I expected after this bounty the following floor did it's best to kill me. More named enemies than I even remember and 2-3 groups of orcs. Opening a door I found a small room packed to the brim with Kobalds and Big Kobalds. Thanks to my ring to control my blinks and several Mephitic Clouds + Imps later I had not only cleared out all the kobalds, but had several zombies including a few named guys that wandered into the open-room melee thanks to my shadow imps. From the countless Kobald Corpses I found a Sabre of Venom and I nearly crapped my pants.

Very early on, like floor 4 or something, I found a temple to Sif Muna. So I had thought that alongside these wonderful items the game had graced me with I would also get some gift books earlier, and thus I thought for the first time that I could lay my hands on a rune.

Sif Muna, of course, never gave me anything until the very end. You see, in Lair level 2 (Which I heard is where a lot of folk get their books, but I assumed they didn't get Sif until the temple. So...) I was having a bit of trouble.

By then, Magic Dart had lost its gusto. Mephitic Cloud seemed to begin wearing off much quicker than before, and my hoards of imps began to actually lose. After careful manipulations with my semi-controlled blink and conjure flames I was able to win battles still. But only barely. I really wanted Sif to grant me a book so that I could get back up to pace.

Then it happened. Yaks. Lots of them. At first I stumbled upon what I thought was a group similar to that of an Orc party. A handful of easily confused targets for myself to poison/hack away at while my imps went into a blood frenzy. I quickly found myself incorrect.

I don't know if this is normal, but there were a lot of Yaks. Their high HP made them eat darts like it was nothing, and I quickly abandoned that. They mowed down countless imps and shook of the Mephitic Cloud a mere handful of turns after they wander into it. And there were legions of them. I killed...I don't know. Easily over 20 Yaks. Very soon I was retreating and hastily mp channeling just to stay alive. Every semi-Controlled blink revealed that another 5-10 Yaks were just off screen the whole time, and more constantly poured into the room I had been backed into from every single hallway. Low on mana, low on imps, and very doubtful of my melee capabilities at that point, I thought I was a goner.

But then it happened. During one of the channel -> Imp -> Channel -> Cloud cycle I desperately tried to keep up, Sif Muna decided to grant me a gift.

Spending a few turns constantly channeling, hoping my few imps and clouds would "hold the line" for a few moments I chain-blinked as far as I could. Maybe 5 or 6 times. I was in another room at this point with only a few Yaks. A quick cloud later and I had bought myself some precious seconds to hopefully look at my new book and learn something I could use to survive this ordeal.

Sif Muna's Collected Works on Buffs and Orientation. Which is a really long title saying "crap". It contained Levitation, Control Teleport, Fire Brand, Excruciating Wounds, and Malign Gateway. With a bit of frustration I spent some time trying to sneak my way to the nearest stairs, hoping that I could either avoid the Yaks or recover enough mana to put up a decent volley of resistance.

Soon, the Yak Legion discovered me, and soon I was once again accosted by an unending torrent of Yaks. Very soon I was out of food to use in conjunction with Channeling, and I was out of my supply of healing potions. I downed a few yaks in single combat to my surprise, and gained enough mana to hastily try to escape death yet again with a final blink.

I soared right over the entire Yak legion and into a mostly empty room. But before I could book a hasty retreat a dark blue bolt of lightning struck me dead. Apparently an Electric Eel was somewhere afoot.

And so ends the tale of my greatest character to date. I have learned much from him though, and I think I could not possibly improve any more when it comes to tactics regarding the wizard starting book. Regardless, Sif Muna let me down. I think from now on Vehemut will be receiving my faith from now on (if I don't want Kiku of course.) At least with him I get sweet passives and I know what books he will throw my way.

I wonder if I'll have any success as a Naga. I rather enjoyed that race last time I tried it. Until next time guys. Thanks for hearing a newbie out!

Re: So I heard you liked Yaks (YASD)

Yeah, that sounds like Sif Muna all right. I like her better when I'm playing a background that starts with a decent mid-game blast spell, which is pretty much not remotely close to wizard at all.

Your game log shows that you killed exactly six yaks, by the way. You may have been encountering the same two packs of yaks as they followed you all over the level. Since you turned off stealth, they have a pretty good chance to know where you went after you broke line-of-sight with them. Next time, you might try looking for a corridor where you can funnel them into Conjured Flames, or at least lure them upstairs one at a time.

Re: So I heard you liked Yaks (YASD)

I see. So what was actually happening was that the Yaks fled when they were low, and simply kept on returning. I did not notice the fleeing ones probably due to all the confused ones. I simply could not do enough damage to them fast enough, I guess.

I do recall that two of my apparent 3 kills were done from my Venom Sabre. I don't remember how I got the third. Imps and zombies took care of the other three buggers. Don't remember why Stealth was off. I probably was trying to victory dance or some such and just forgot to turn it back on.

I suppose I'll save Sif Muna for when I start as an IE or something. Blink was extremely valuable with my early ring of control teleport, but without one it normally just puts me on the other side of the monster I want to put distance between. I don't quite know. Maybe I'll play around a bit more with various elementalists.

Thanks for the advice. I got too used to fighting in open areas with a lot of Imps and clouds. Should have blocked a corridor with fire and fled. I'll be sure to remember that next time.

Re: So I heard you liked Yaks (YASD)

A cheap trick for melee creatures (in your case, yaks).
Lure 2-4 enemies in a corridor like this:
  Code:
#######
@.YYYY.
#######

Conjure flames on the both sides of yak pack and fire a Mephitic cloud at the nearest. Two yaks closer to you will get confused and bump into the fire and die (melee them), and if the cloud still lasts, others may too. So, you can kill 2-3 of them with just 9 MP.

Re: So I heard you liked Yaks (YASD)

Also, now you know two useful things about yaks that will help a lot next time:

1) they run away when they're badly hurt, so you have to hit them hard or fight them where they can't get away so easily, and

2) they come in herds.

Because of the way packs work, it can be fiddly to separate them from their little friends, but it can be done. In particular, getting them to chase you to the upstairs then pulling just one up with you (even better, back to the Dungeon) is very effective. This makes it easier to chase a fleeing yak down when 1) happens, because you don't have the others goring, trampling, spitting on etc.
I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh

Man. That sucks for you. The first book Sif gave to me was a tome of annihilations. Or a tome of summoning. I can't remember which was exactly second. At one point I also found this tome on D3. With a minotaur fighter. > .>

Yes. Well it has been a number of years since I last saw that particular meme. At least one person got the joke though, right?

But yeah. I really have a strong dislike of them now. Since this character died I've been gored like 5-10 more times by the darn things. They seem to always catch me at the worst possible times...like right after a nasty run in with a pair of named elf twins, for example.

They seem to be my nemesis, at the moment. Sigmund has never killed me, despite all the talk about him, but these random monsters no one seems to talk about end me. Badly.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
