CIP->YASD FeEn - boy, felids are rough.

Oh, man. Everyone keeps telling mummies are hard, but seriously, felids aren't even on the same order of magnitude.

More than the lack of gear, what sucks is the tiny HP; hell, even ogres feel like glass cannons sometimes, but this... :?

This is the second attempt actually; the first died to a single kobold with a dagger that bottled me up on D:1. Seriously, even bad as I am, I don't think I've ever died like this before. Having to stay away from anything that isn't a rat, a bat or a cockroach isn't encouraging, not one bit.

So this is the first FeEn that I managed to get off D:1. Level 5, and still only 22 HP - that's less than many newborn characters I've played. I'd like to pick Fedhas as a god, since I have yet to get a victory with Fedhas, kitties have no use for those lowly fruits, and people say good things about him all the time.

Still, there's one of the usual dilemmas. As the difficulty is insane, and it won't get any better, I imagine that every single point of EXP is going to matter. Hexes are very useful for the time being - being able to take care of that kobold with an elec whip in full safety can't be bad - but by lair, it's going to take some serious investment to hex highish MR enemies such as death yaks (or learn invis, which has essentially the same effect), and hexes become all but completely useless by late Vaults, where just about every monster can see invisible, and the nasty ones are magic immune. Not even just very resistant (of which there is plenty too, anyway), but flat out immune. Why the dev team has decided to make enemies like liches, statues, and fiends completely immune to even a hypothetical 200 spellpower hex is an alien concept that is, and will forever be beyond my understanding. Not to get started on Zot, where the only enemies you can hex at all are draconians and dragons - many of which still have a prohibitively high MR anyway - and again, who on earth needs to hex draconians anyway.
Now, rant on magic immune enemies aside, sooner or later I'm going to stop training hexes, but I still don't know when - the idea right now is to get confuse down to about 5-7% fail rate and then forget about hexes entirely - which is going to be very soon anyway. Getting spellpower up is probably going to be prohibitive - offensive spells like fireball & co. have one spellpower step down; with the bizarre concept of "Enchantment power", hexes have two, or in case of EH, three subsequent stepdowns. Whether I'll get into transmutations or conjurations+elemental offensive spells, I guess, will depend on what I'll find, and, in case transmutations come out on top, I don't know which stat I should focus on.
Still, this is the char dump; as always, any general advice from someone who has learned to keep felids alive is welcome.

Turn off every skill but UC for a while, I would say probably until 8-10 skill.

By the time you encounter infinite MR obstacles, you should have tech'd up alternate killdudes. Not every spell accessible to the Hexes school cares about MR (or SInv) and you should have branched into alternate skills by then. But that's for the future. Get to the lategame first.

Update:
Confuse learned (in fact, I picked tukima first only because of the aforementioned pesky kobold with an elec whip), works well for now.
I also learned Dazzling spray, but haven't had the chance (or the reason) to use it yet.

I trained UC exclusively, which quickly reached 9.4; I've begun to train fighting/dodging again, though UC is still focused. I also joined Fedhas, and I'm training some invos too.

I've then descended the stairs to D:7, right in sight of a very nasty surprise: skeletal warriors. Fortunately they were still dormant, and I immediately tiptoed back upstairs. I know these are way out of my league, and go down another staircase. Next thing I know, I'm at 24/39 HP, surrounded by 6 killer bees and a centaur.
I'm waiting for advice before taking any action, but the idea is to pop a scroll of fear and then get back up.

Conversely - I like having hexes way higher than UC for Felid Enchanters. I'm basically NEVER just tabbing anything, and always using confuse on stronger enemies and EH on weaker enemies. (I've learned not to try to stab powerful sleeping enemies after I failed to one-shot a sleeping orb of fire... and was then next to an awake orb of fire. Which easily killed me.) it might take me a few more hits to kill confused enemies, but with super-high hexes I make sure that the enemies can be confused.

And remember, hexes train twice as fast as unarmed combat on felids. So it just seems like a better investment.

My skill priorities through dungeon:

Highest: Hexes
Next: Dodging, fighting, stealth. (Stealth increases stabbing damage and trains - again - twice as fast as UC. And I care waaaaaay more about stabbing damage than I do about melee damage, because I am stabbing everything and straight out fighting nothing, because I am a felid.)
And then: Unarmed, spellcasting, secondary magic school (conjurations, transmutations, summonings.)

Also, some invocations but I'm not using high tier God powers because I just don't have the XP to spare. And some evocations if floor drops are good. Wand of iceblast, sack or spider and box of beasts are especially useful.


Afterwards the secondary magic school becomes more important, but I still don't train UC incredibly high unless I've got statue form online.

Problem with Confuse is that you still can be hit by that confused Hill Giant and Orb of Fire is immune to magic.
Confusion + EH is the safest way to kill of course, I try to do it vs hydra.

Ooh, I haven't tried that. Although hydra have enough resistance that getting off EH is tough, when I first meet them. (With Hexes at 14-15.)

Another option is confuse + dazzling spray at range, but that will eat up all your magic points.

Worth remembering: Ring of ice makes your EH far more effective. (Just remember to take if off if you enter the volcano! That killed me, once. :) )

First you confused hydra and then try to make it sleep. If you are unlucky and out of MP, just run away. Or alternatively just kill the confused hydra with Dazzling Spray, seems more reliable.

Got a book of minor magic and a book of debilitation; I'm more interested in the former.
I've stopped training invos and resumed stealth. I know that a +4 apt in hexes looks very good on paper, but unfortunately hexes undergo a double stepdown - the diminishing returns are, in fact, barely any return - and then there's the looming problem of resistant enemies, which means that eventually any and all exp given to hexes will be pretty much gone down the drain. Maybe I should've picked Ashenzari, but hey, mushrooms are fun.

I am not sure what you mean as diminishing returns for hexes, you are very far from that point (your spell power for confuse is just about 27, first step down happens at 50 and it is not that significant).

Huh. Why do you think that?

I've been running FeEn damn near exclusively lately, and if you want to make it to the end of the dungeon without dying (and you REALLY don't want to die early) you need some hex power. There are quite a few times when I find myself needing to confuse an entire pack of ugly things before they kill me in 2-3 hits. 49% success with confuse just ain't gonna cut it.

Still, definitely learn blink and repel missiles. My last two games I did not find repel missiles at all, and died. Conjure flame can help with death yaks - Death yaks are trivial to kill but they take forever with just dazzling spray.

Alright, I'm training a bit more hexes then, mostly to reliably stop centaur warriors - ugly things I do my best to take one on one, since luckily they're a tiny bit slower than kitties. So far I handled death yaks and hydras in Lair with mushrooms and oklobs, which took care of them nicely.

Maybe I tend to look down on hexes a bit, since everytime I played VpEn before and overtrained hexes I seemed to be in trouble by mid game. This time, focusing them less, even with the much less forgiving felids the mid game doesn't feel terribly bad.

Fortunately in Lair I hit the jackpot and found a book of changes. For the time being I learned S2S and ice form, but not blade hands yet, as ice form gives some badly-needed HP. I'm looking forward for Dragon Form, since that means even more HP and wands - I also got 2 HW wands.

Ice form damn near got me killed a couple times, but I found it much later and had about the same UC that you do now. There are still a lot of situations where you'll want felid speed more than ice form, but if you pump up UC it should be good. I've had serious escape problems in the swamp (hate...thorn hunters...so....much) that swimming would have trivialized.

I'd be really nervous about blade hands. It doesn't provide any additional protection, removes some escape options, and means that you have to stand next to monsters with your 56 hit points.

Update:

Unfortunately, I met my first death on D:15, courtesy of a single hell knight; to elaborate, I was in ice form - full or nearly-full HP, I believe - and tried to lure said hell knight upstairs to dispatch him without his friends, but he was hasted and got, I believe, two or three decisive hits in and before I knew it I was dead, and respawned nearby. Another reminder that I die far more easily than I'm used to, and you can pay dearly for a single slip up. It normally would've also been a reminder to do Orc before finishing Dungeon, but in this particular case Orc was nasty, I had a stone giant on Orc:1 and an army of smiting and demon-summoning enemies on Orc:2, and it took a lot of careful footwork and tactical casting (read: the usual cheap tricks) to clear the area.

Been starting Spider and Swamp; the good news is that I found a book of transfigurations and, while Dragon Form is still too hard, Hydra form is not and will be great in Swamp; the bad news is that Nikola is wandering around in Spider:2, and without rElec other than a single potion of resistance, I don't feel like going down there any time soon, even for a very short time.

EDIT:

Vaults:1, bit the big one. Game over this time. I had noticed that, since the end of the lair branches, things were going south, fast, and apparently popping items was only delaying the inevitable. I believe I spread too much EXP over different skills, namely hexes, translocations and transmutations. I think next time I'll be rolling with Ash, so that I can reroute EXP, once hexes and stealth become useless, into, probably, summonings which seem to work ok on fragile species.

Huh. That's weird. Spider is generally a cakewalk for a hex-based character. Ghost moths are the only problem. (I used potion of lignification + summons, and still had to quaff a bunch of heal wounds/curing.) Snake is tougher - I didn't die last time I did it, but I'm sure that guardian serpents can one-shot you.

Swamp was tougher, but I had enough scrolls of vulnerability to take down thorn hunters. Spriggans should theoretically be a problem, but using stealth to run for the stairs and break up packs kept me alive.

There's always a chance of getting unucky and gettingcrossbowed, but if you have hexes around 20 and evasion < 35, there isn't much in vaults that can mess with you. Hexes work on (I believe) all normal spawns until vaults:5. (Which I've never tackled with a feline enchanter because I've never found discord. That should make V:5 into a cakewalk,right?)

I'm still not quite sure how to deal with orbs of fire. Don't try to stab them if they are asleep! But statue form or shadow creatures or OOD should be enough to take them out - I think.

Why not? Felid should be able to survive at least 2 max Fireballs at this point and have good EV and RMsl/DMsl for Bolts of Fire.

Swamp was tougher, but I had enough scrolls of vulnerability to take down thorn hunters. Spriggans should theoretically be a problem, but using stealth to run for the stairs and break up packs kept me alive.

TBH, at this point I wasn't really hex-focused; I was, more or less, a jack of all trades, master of none, which, coupled with some slip ups, I feel resulted in my demise. Regardless, I finished Spider without any deaths and very few worrisome situations. Swamp on the other hand... I used hydra form extensively, if anything, for the speed bonus when swimming, and for the first floors, things were going relatively smoothly. Thorn hunters and mangroves, which would've been the greatest threat, weren't a problem because of Fedhas; spriggans, one on one, could be overpowered; alligators and leeches could be hexed; hydras could be faced, one on one, with some Fedhas allies and possibly hexed; dragons could be hexed, but I didn't even need to; ghost crabs were a pain in the butt, but they could too be hexed with a few attempts and luckily there wasn't a lot of them. Swamp:4, however, had plenty of hydras, which were somewhat difficult to hex and just kept coming. Hydra form was squishy, at least with such low HP, and facing a hydra one on one could easily go wrong. I can't recall exactly how and why, but in Swamp:4 I had my second death.

Well some of the giants have somewhat high MR; I can't remember if shadow dragons only spawn on V:5 or, occasionally above too.

The problem with Vaults (or rather, the first floor, because I didn't even manage to get any deeper) was sheer numbers; I could hex one enemy, true; but when other five would pop in and do all sorts of nasty things, such as peppering you with bolts, shutting the doors, summoning, and so on, things could get ugly. In fact, the monsters that eventually did me in were, I believe, boggarts. Yes, freaking boggarts. The very definition of squishy on their own, and with my other characters I could generally just overpower their summons and get to them, but not in this case, and before long I was teleporting all over the place, from bad to worse. While it's possible that neglecting stealth in favor of forms was a mistake, I got my third death, and at this point I pretty much said "Fuck this" and did a banzai charge.

The idea was to use dragon form since it has lots (well, relatively) of HP, hits hard, and has rF++, but that was a long term goal.

Lesson learned. The hard way, as usual :roll:
The fact Hydra has 9 AC and somewhat decent HP kind of lulled me into a false sense of security, and I think, I ignored the fact that it killed my stealth which is possibly a felid's greatest asset.
