CiP DEFE Glass Cannon

Hi all,

here's my first attempt at a pure caster. Just cleared lair and I have a nice set of spells going.
But if something hits me, things get ugly very fast.

I dont want the char to be a hybrid; really a pure caster.

Any advice is very welcome!

Are you allowing yourself to use weapons at all? To equip them? Just not to train them?

Set your challenge condition explicitly. But first understand that you are setting a specific restriction / conduct, not "building a pure caster," which do not actually exist in Crawl.

(My bad if someone has actually ascended a no scroll, no potion, no evocables, no weapon, no innate or mutated abilities, no non-magical skill training character before.)

Nice randart ring, but you don't really need the +3 str ring to counterbalance it. Hopefully you have a more useful ring to replace it.

Too many offensive spells, probably. Do you really use Force Lance? And IMO you don't need all 3 of Fireball, Bolt of Magma, and OOD.

Looks like you have Animate Dead for a while, then amnesia'd it. But why? Allies are good.

Get more utility spells. Ozo's Armour if you have it. Summons maybe? Spellforged Servitor is good.

Boots of Assassin would have made me think about stabber, too bad.

Yo, why the hell are people inventing arbitrary definitions for "pure caster" that serves as nothing but threadcrapping? I think that what OP means by "pure caster" is quite intuitive - a character that only relies on spells to kill enemies (not counting things like tabbing a giant newt while going back to a D:3 shop). "Challenge condition"? Who even said that OP was doing a challenge with set rules? I've won with a character that was more or less a "pure caster", and it entailed nothing other than me deciding to play more or less like one.

Now, as far as actually useful advice is concerned: don't sit on those enchant armor scrolls, use them on your auxiliary slots (maybe keep one if you are planning to get some new dragon armor in the near future). I'd put two on the helmet at least. Don't train Spellcasting any more unless you need more spell levels - at this point you should be focusing on your most used spell schools and defensive skills.

You might want to get Spellforged Servitor, it's a really good spell that improves your mana efficiency (the servitor will cast a lot more mana's worth of spells while it's up).

I didnt think of any rules. It's also not meant as a challenge. I just wanna play a caster that kills with spells not weapons. I might use weapons for their properties, e.g., rF

Force lance is to keep stuff away from me.

I figured a high damage one target spell, a bolt spell and an area spell are a handy mix of offensive stuff.

I thought that Conjure Flame already keeps stuff away, or at least kills it quicker.

Bolt vs area is mostly for convenience only, I think? Imagine that you only have one high damage single target spell. You'd still be able to kill everything, it would just take longer. Btw I forget but I think the Servitor will occasionally Fireball you if you happen to be adjacent to enemies.

"No weapon training" is a self-imposed restriction. By itself, it isn't the most demanding or extreme restriction, sure, but that's still what it is. Call it whatever you want to call it. That's what milbert said s/he had in mind for this character, so now that I know that, I can give advice. (Your definition of "pure caster" is apparently not so intuitive, or at least it doesn't quite match up with what the OP had in mind—"no weapon training.")


@ OP: What makes a character "glassy" or not is a function of HP and the primary defensive attributes (AC/EV/SH). (Spells like repel/deflect missiles definitely help, too, but you can't rely on those alone.) "Glassiness" has nothing to do with being a "caster," and every character should try to minimize their "glassiness" regardless of how they choose to kill things.

Advice: Your offensive power is good for right now, so train up some more fighting and dodging. Train more evocations in order to channel with your staff of energy more efficiently. I would delay spellforged servitor for a while.

Ok, so animate dead is a very good idea (as mentioned above), passage of golubria can be quite handy although it takes some getting used to (not for everyone). Shadow creatures is still a bargain at level 6 imo, and after you've invested in summoning skill to get shadow creatures, the spellforged servitor will start looking like a reasonable investment as well.

With Vehumet, staff of energy, and a few potions of magic, you are fine in the MP recharge department for now. Nonetheless keep an eye out for sublimation of blood and crystal ball of energy. (Be careful with sublimation and just look up info about CBoE before you start using it.)

Note: I don't know what is in those randart books (disquisition on clay, earthen hexes) except that they are earth-themed.

I would not use summons with DEFE of Vehumet. Summons will get in the way of Bolt of Fire and OoD, they make all those skills in Conjuration/fire wasted. You have Int 40 at XL 14 so go big, go Fire Storm. Also it is path of classic pure caster, exactly like you wanted.

Summons can get in the way if used without forethought, but they hardly "make all those skills in Conjuration/fire wasted." Shadow creatures could naturally be picked up on the way to servitor (and amnesia'd if unwanted without any real wastefulness).

Even with 40 int and vehumet's help, fire storm will take some time. I think the character will do better by hitting a few, more proximate goals before setting sights on a dual school lvl 9.

I don't see why to train a new school for level 6 spells when you can kill everything with current level 6-7 spells.
I got Fire Storm on Troll in early Depths, this is Deep Elf, it already has level 7 spell of Conj/Fire at 7% on Lair 6 without any wizardry.
Go big, go fire Storm ;)

I had animate dead for a while, but never used it and figured my zombies would be in the way of my spells.
The plan is in deed to go fire storm.

Depths is usually much worse than Elf. Caustic Shrikes, Juggernauts, Iron giants, Ancient Lich etc.
Underestimated: cleaving, Deep Elf, Formicid, Vehumet, EV

A well played deep elf is a glass cannon because deep elves are inherently very squishy, so your choices are glass cannon or glass but not cannon.

(I am not saying that your should get defences on a deep elf.)
