That early game was exhilarating and terrifying. If not for the shafting ability, I'd be dead twice over. But once I got a good axe, Okawaru, and the +1 plate armour, Lair became easy.

...no? Why do you ask? Formicids are pretty good, actually. Not the best, but not the worst. They're no Mummy, that's for sure. And Okawaru is pretty useful.

Are you noticing some oddity of my skill training that you think would indicate a challenge? (Like no Fighting on a Deep Elf, etc.) Because otherwise I'm quite befuddled by your question.

Also, does Statue Form slow Formicids down?

Formicids are considered one of the worst races, as they cannot escape easily (with ?teleport/?blink/blink/cblink). Shafting can land you in a worse spot and does not work in branch ends. Usually, when playing a formicid, you either go lugonu (for bend space), zin (for sanctuary), or warper (for passage of golubria). A formicid without any of these options has to be played super carefully.

Why would you go Warper? You can't use most of their spells...

So do you think that I should switch to Zin? It's rather hard to get piety with him, though. And without blinking, Oka's summons can be pretty tough.

Almost everyone goes FoFi to take advantage of their primary benefit, though. That's what I've seen, and playing FoFi the earlygame feels quite easy to me(which is part of why I've been speedrunning them lately, alongside wanting to speedrun something a bit more weird). I think the strength of 2H+shield with good shield apts and large race shield penalty bonus is actually quite large, and makes them a fairly good melee-centric species. Not as good as something like Mi or Ho of course, but not bad, especially if you get an early oka altar. Certainly better than mummies by a long shot.

Over half of all the Fo games ever are Fighter starts, putting Fighter at more than 4 times more popular than Abyssal Knight, the next most popular. Warper is all the way in 12th, over 32 times less popular than Fighter... which doesn't surprise me, since going a book start just for one specific level 4 spell seems like a pretty bad idea.

I don't think I have ever gone Zin on a Fo, or seen anyone else do it. Probably not the worst idea, but I would much rather go/stick with Oka for the capacity to mince anything and everything with Heroism+Finesse and a big weapon.

Shafting isn't bad if you use it well, too. If you use it at 2/3rds or half of your health when things start looking bad, you have a decent chance of surviving whatever you find below, and when you go back up to the dangerous level you can stairdance your foes away.

TBH I usually don't find myself needing to dig or shaft. But if you really want to be careful, you can almost always make a murderhole, which is hugely helpful.

It just occurred to me that for Fo, with Antennae 3, Darkness might be really good because your mutations lets you detect monsters that cannot see you, and avoid them if you'd like to without their even making a stealth check. Does this in fact work the way I'm guessing it does? (I've never played Fo, nor any antennae 3 character for that matter.)
