So far I've been doing really well in a hybrid role. I've had the occasional close call with a few really tough monsters (yes I know I have that one enchant scroll that I should use, it's a bad habit of mine to save those) but on the whole I've been doing really well. That +5 longsword artefact has been much better than I would've expected and has really left me not having to use spells except against the really tough monsters. I have, however, had to play VERY smart in order to not die against hard hitters, due to not having better armor. (At one point I was in a corner with a group of death yaks, down to just one alive, and I was at like 17 HP. Since I was avoiding most of the hits I chose to use a cure potion to restore some HP putting me at 28. The very next turn the death yak hit me for 20. Yeesh.)

And now I've found Maxwell's. With this I could easily transition to pure melee and wreak havoc.

But my intention with this character was to stay hybrid, with melee for popcorn and spells for the tough stuff. Obviously with Maxwell's I can't cast, so it's down to the question: do I use it, yes or no? I'm probably just going for a three runer here since this I've splatted like 25 GrEE (I'm not even kidding--after that one I had before that got to Vaults I splatted it and then no others even reached Lair till now) but I could always change my mind. What do, Tavern peeps?

I think with Gr you can do whatever and still win.

I remember 1 time when I found Maxwell's I died with it. Still I'd probably use it instead of +0 leather until I find some decent dragon armour (Swamp DA, FDA, QDA).

But OP should realize that switching decreases chance to win (Ash does not have any panic buttons and its main benefit is stopped by -Cast on the armour).
Though I agree it can be fun to switch to Chei when you find Maxwell's Armour, Obsidian Axe and Shield of Gong as XL 14 DEWz :)

Stone Arrow, plus intention of using Iron Shot as soon as I found it. I didn't realize I could use ring mail and not see all that much of a decrease in spell success. Re other spells: nothing useful to me has come up so far.

Anyways I've been using Maxwell's to great success. I went through several levels where without it I would've... struggled, to say the least. (Like ten uniques on one level, not fun.) I haven't yet decided whether or not to just go whole hog with melee or switch back to something more reasonable when I find a more reasonable piece of armor (as one hasn't cropped up yet that I'd consider using) but for now at least, using Maxwell's has only helped me.

Stone Arrow is capped at spell power 50, you have spell power about 59 in OP. Almost never train skills for something you don't have. You can find Maxwell's armour instead of Iron Shot, for example :)
If nothing is left to train, train Fighting, it's always useful.

You can check "I" screen, those ###.. show how much spell power you have (#) and can have (.). If there are no dots after #, then you have maxed spell power for that spell.

Right, okay, that's why I misreading it. I thought it capped at six #s and didn't realize there wasn't a dot. Curse my poor eyesight.
