Killed from full health by Asterion in one turn. Brutal stuff. I don't think he's ever troubled me before, so I didn't take sensible precautions. Pity, it was all going very nicely.

This game reminded me of the things I dislike about ranged combat.
1) Early game ammo limitations. You pretty much have to pick up a crappy melee weapon and spend many, many turns hitting things with it. That's boring, and also spoiler-y, because you have to know very precisely what you can afford to hit with the crappy melee weapon.
2) Having to either autoexplore, or spend forever picking up ammo. Since I started paying a tiny bit of attention to turn counts, I don't really like autoexplore.
I'm not sure I can see any way in which the game would be worse if there was infinite ammo.

Rough death. My condolences.

Infinite ammo eliminates any drawback to ranged combat. "Ammo always mulches" would also solve the ammo pickup issue. (Number of bolts/arrows/etc. generated can be tweaked alongside this change, obviously.)

I feel that when ammo is meaningfully finite it's mostly annoying because of weapon switching. To play the finite ammo section of the game well, you need to know exactly what is dangerous, wield your bow all the time, and swap to a low-skill melee weapon for all trivial fights. I also don't think finite ammo is that much of a drawback for ranged, played in that way - a minimal melee investment and some tedium makes ammo a non-issue after the early game. If the problem is ranged being overpowered, surely that can be solved in a less uncontrolled and annoying way, such as:
1) Reducing damage from ranged attacks.
2) Needing mulching missiles to deal *lots* of damage - but for popcorn you can just blast away with standard arrows.
3) Reducing damage from ranged attacks against things in melee range, or having ranged attacks be interruptable by creatures in melee range (which seems somewhat realistic!).
4) Reducing damage from ranged attacks against things far away.
5) Making ranged attacks slower.

Always mulching solves the pickup issues - and I think would be an improvement - but doesn't solve what I see as the core problem with ranged fighting.

If one feels that switching weapons is tedious, then there would have to be rather more drastic changes to the game than anything we are talking about here.

(As for my own view, I don't think it is "tedious" exactly but I do not like jewelry/weapon swapping and would actually prefer it if they eventually were removed, fwiw. The dev team appears to be moving in a different direction: weapons and rings can be swapped quickly, amulets can be swapped quickly but you do not usually want to do so, other equipment takes a while to remove/change.)

Ranged combat is arguably OP, but that's not quite the issue I was raising. At any rate, it seems to me that your proposed changes would make ranged combat more annoying. They would encourage more weapon swapping or (with #2) 'q'uiver changes in the middle of combat.

I do think there may be bigger problems with ranged combat, but it seems to me that if we are going to keep it, then it makes sense to try to balance it in the context of ammo always mulching, and scarcity of ammo being at least potentially a consideration.

Fair enough. Those ideas are pretty off the cuff, and I'm sure there's something wrong with some or all of them, but I feel there must be something better than the current system. Or it may be that I'm just unusual in hating ammo management, in which case I'll just not play ranged characters (after I've won a damn Arcane Marksman). It's a rare aspect of Crawl which I don't think provides any interesting challenges, only micromanagement problems I don't really want to deal with.

Oh, I agree, it might be very hard to make ammo management fun, and I don't like ranged combat very much overall for reasons similar to yours.

But if there is any niche in current design space that ranged combat occupies, then it is, "limited use based on ammo drops." If you take that away, I have a hard time seeing how you can justify its continued existence in the game. (But I freely admit that I might just be unimaginative :) )

Actually it wasn't in one turn. You were at full health (101), and then he hit you two times in a single turn (because of haste), bringing you down to 66. Then you shot him again, and he missed you twice, then you shot him again, and he hit you two more times, killing you. Also your attack delay was at 1.1 turns with the crossbow, so you actually had a full 3.3 turns between being at full health and being dead. Not a huge amount of time, but definitely not being oneshot from 100HP.

Oh! Fair enough. I wonder whether I simply didn't notice the first damage, or accidentally pressed tab multiple times. :P

I did go back to check exactly what happened, but couldn't see any previous hits in the log (only the two misses). Is there a way to get more detailed information on the game?

Interesting. I would have thought that the niche is "killing things from far away" - without MP restrictions, but (in some way) not as effective as up close.

Having mulled on it overnight, I thought I'd just clarify a little what annoys me - it's not about two extra key presses to switch weapons. It's that moment when you see a threat that isn't totally trivial, but also couldn't kill you. Maybe a lone orc on D:4. Having identified it as such, most characters can just kill it with no fuss - you aren't going to buff or do anything unusual. But a ranged character has to think "Can I kill this safely with a 0 skill whip? Can I kill it with a 0 skill whip after softening it up? If I get worried while using the whip, do I have time to switch to my real weapon?". I don't find those decisions fun. I think the reason for that is that the normal and best possible outcome of them is that you kill something you were always going kill.
