YAVP SpFe 15 runes + zig
After way too many Mummies in 0.8 I decided to move on to 0.9. I decided to go with Fe because Spriggans natural speed goes perfectly with the versatile new fire spell Inner Flame. The builds early game is interesting, Inner flame has the best damage for mana cost in the game. But the question is how to use it effectively, the obvious targets are low MR low hp creatures, Orcs, Kobolds and Goblin are wonderful for that, the key is always staying two spaces away from them using Spriggans speed and at the same time keeping yourself behind the weak creature avoiding the danger of the stronger enemy. Inner flames utility goes up a level once you find additional spell books. Mephic cloud makes setting up a nice explosion easier, Blink allows slower races to get to a safe distance from the intended victims but the man utility lies in summoning spells.
Inner flame can target allies, so casting it on one and ordering it to fight an enemy can lead to good results as your summon will stick to the enemy until or he kills it or you dispatch it yourself. Trunk has something else which goes perfectly with Inner flame, it has a common Ashenazi alter setup that provides the character with a spell book with a single spell, raise skeleton. It's nice and all for worshipers, but Fe's will love the vault, summon skeleton is absolutely perfect as fodder for Inner flame. Skeletons are slow, so slower races can keep a safe distance, they have terrible defences and best of all they all have 0 MR. Just order a few skeletons into a fray and at the last second cast inner flame on the skeleton, the enemy will attack and die.
Ok, so using Inner Flame I took out pretty much all the early game uniques and I made it to the lair, luckily I found a book with bolt of fire which made the mid game easy, I also found a staff of energy that allowed me to spam bolt of fire at will. The new skill system is a boon for casters. I decided from the beginning to grey out everything except my magic skills, looking back this was a great idea, I was able to cast bolt of fire at a stage when I needed it to take on the nastier mid game uniques and later on I was able to cast necromutation right when I really needed it, before elf 5 and vault 8. At the same time I had enough xp to train fighting and dodging and stealth to decent levels, leaving everything else at level 1. Slime gave me enough xp to be able to cast fire storm at great and after vault 8 and elf 5 I was prepared for taking on a zig with high charms, decent translocations and excellent fire storm and necromutation.
One other spell of note was ignite poison, as I needed high transmutations for necromutation, I pumped it early on to decent levels before taking on Snake. The snakes melted like butter, I pretty much zoomed through the entire branch without breaking a sweat, without resist poison. The same can be said about hive, it's also great at taking on swamp as both hydra's and swamp dragon are susceptible to it. I also used it heavily during my Zig run as it kills snake and spider levels faster than fire storm does as weird as that sounds.
The zig was surprisingly easy, Fire storm allows you to stay at full mana through out when worshipping vehumet, so I spammed firestorm endlessly, even the last level which was an ancient lich level was easy. Fire storm's range gives the caster much better control than tornado pertaining to the amount of creatures on screen when casting it. Even dangerous levels such as angel levels can be taken on with minimal risk.
By the time I finished the Zig I had 27 dodging and 16 fighting, making my character as tough as hell and as I found around 9 cure mutation potions, I risked the mutation roulette and ended up with 10% hp and some other minor bonuses. (I never needed the cure mutation potions) I also found wonderful rings and amulets that replaced my vanilla ring of fire and ring of wizardry.
The late end game went fairly smoothly, I pumped earth to high levels during my visit to the tomb, allowing me to cast shatter and spear as preparation to take on the unique pan lords as i knew that Fire storms physical element has been nerfed, after my first attempt I realized that I need some sort of mana regeneration so I took on Zot just for the sake of getting 27 evocations. After that, it was all about the success and failure of my crystal ball of energy, but as my character had such high dodging, I was never really at risk, even when I was confused in sight of one of the hell lords.
