CIP SpEn of Ash needs direction (Now YAVP)

I have this little SpEn going, things are going fairly well but I feel the character is a bit too unfocused. There are lots of good spells available, and I'm having trouble picking which ones to actually use.

I just amnesiad darkness, with the intention of memorizing ozo's armor. I must have just gotten another spell slot, as I apparently had enough without using amnesia.

I'm currently training air, with the vague intention of getting tornado castable for the foes I can't stab through hexes or invisibility. Currently I'm using battlesphere and dazzling spray, with some fulminant prism to deal with enemies I can't stab.

I could probably afford to swap out both my rings, although I haven't seen any exciting rings to swap for.

There are lots and lots of books available, so feel free to just assume a spell is available, because it probably is.

There is also a scroll of acquirement for sale for 937 gold in orc, I'm just not sure what to acquire. I've already acquired a book(buglary, pretty good) and a lamp of fire, which I apparently dropped by mistake at some point...

I have the invisibility spell at 1% fail, and I also have a cloak of invis. No other branded cloaks exist, and I have the spell because it lasts quite a bit longer than the evokable, and is more reliable (evokable is 19% fail).

I've trained a lot of spellcasting... I've wanted spell slots all game, and as a spriggan spell hunger is more relevant than usual, but I probably have gone overboard here. It's hard to resist memorizing everything that looks nice...


So please, pick this character apart. Currently my biggest issue is magic immune and very high resistance monsters who cannot easily be blinded with dazzling spray.

Being "unfocused" is a benefit of Ash, you can have huge number of level 6+ spells without much cost if you have high Int.

Id wands, you have 18 scrolls and you are with Ash who ids gear automatically for you. It takes 7 Shields to remove penalties for Sp.
Everything else seems ok to me, make sure to visit Elf 1-2 after Vaults 4, it should be relatively easy with Invisibility (even Elf 3 is hilariously easy if you find Silence somewhere).

Hah, good point about needing 7 shields, I totally forgot about that!

Yeah, good point about IDing my wands too, I obviously have a bunch to spare.

I was thinking maybe I should take a trip to elf. Silence is available, so obviously I should memorize that.

How high do you think I'll need to get air magic to get tornado castable? And is tornado a good way to kill OOFs? I have only ever used it once, and I can't remember if it did well against high AC enemies. Obviously I'd use it on other monsters, but eventually I am going to want a way to kill OOFs...

I remember a thread recently where a player went for Tornado as SpEn of Ash. I was arguing hard with the rest of players who insisted that Tornado was a bad idea. It was a good idea according to me ;)
It is not necessary but it makes game much easier. Make sure to put points into Int if you go for Tornado.

Tornado is ok vs high AC monsters and OoF.

I've been putting all my stat-ups into int. I don't think I need more dex, heh.

OK then, I'll stick with my plan of getting tornado castable, eventually. I guess I'll just keep training spellcasting, I want to memorize more spells than I have slots for...

Now I just hope that some resistance rings show up. I'd probably even trade my archmagi robe for a resistance robe. I'm a bit nervous about getting fireballed by fire giants...

Right, Archmagi becomes less useful late game due to spell power step down. Also you have partial Archmagi from Ash boost (10.6(14.9) Air Magic is almost Archmagi) and probably some of your spells are already beyond max spell power.

Tornado is great but requires a lot of skill to get it reasonably castable (and obviously doesn't work in corridors), how much varies obviously but something like 20? Personal favourite way of dealing with OOF/other nasty stuff is malign gateway (just be wary of the chaos brand!), the Tloc investment helps with cblink as well.

I'm a fan of armour acquirement, especially for species like spriggans with limited slots.

An armor acq could get me a better shield, which would be nice, or a robe of resistance/rf. There is a robe of cold resistance, but with such high EV and dmsl I'm not terribly worried about cold damage. Can any enemies cast ice cloud anymore?

No, at least, not that I know of, I just thought that maybe freezing cloud had been removed from tengu reavers because they killed their allies more than the player usually. I seem to recall something along those lines at some point, but I could very well be misremembering.

In fact, I have a book of clouds, so I could memorize freezing cloud. I don't think I will though, even though it's a good spell.

I love Freezing/Poisonous Cloud, especially for Sp/Fe and especially for Elf. You have both reasons in your game ;)


Edit. It can be castable in no time with your Conj/Air and Ash.

Also cloak of rpois or MR, and hat of int. Decent chance for a randart as well. Outside of extended only freezing cloud monsters I recall are ice statues.

Well, I can confirm reavers still have it, so I must have just been imagining things.
I have more than enough MR as is, ideally I'd want an int hat, an rpois cloak, rf or rc+rf buckler (does that even exist?), and rc+rf robe (I know that does exist). That's not considering artifacts of course.
My cloak of invis is almost useless now, more hunger, less duration, more fail chance. The only good thing is less MP, and it's cancellable, if that even matters.

I also found a haste wand recently, so I'm even less likely to acquire a wand.

Honestly, it's spell slots I'm more worried about than being able to cast the spell. Although I probably should just get it, freezing cloud is a good spell... Now that forgetting things from books is removed I am a bit more careful about memorizing spells.

Some neighbor thread has a character with rF+/rC+ buckler so I am sure it still exists.

Yes, I wrote recently, Ash is bad because you can use lots of spells but you have no spell slots ;)

So I've made some progress, finished elf, and made it through most of depths. Tornado is at 14% fail, 6% with wizardry, but still red. I'm exclusively training spellcasting and air. I know I'd get tornado castable faster if I'd just focus air, but I'd like to get the hunger cost down a little anyway, plus I could really use the spell slots. I have no room for darkness or silence at the moment, and both would be nice (Does tornado hit monsters past LOS under darkness?)

A cacodemon in a vault managed to malmutate me twice, but all I got was -2 dex and -1 ac from unfitting armor. Not too bad.
I'm beginning to think I should use a different amulet. I seem to have excessive amounts of MR as it is, and clarity is useless since I'm with ash. There aren't any amazing amulets available, but there's a magic regen at least.

In other news, a book of annihilation dropped, although I'll probably never have enough spell slots to use it... chain lightning is at 14% fail, and it'd be nice to have it, but would I rather have that than darkness? I don't know...

So overall the character has solidified a decent amount, and I'm able to land hexes on iron trolls and things with similar MR, so it's going pretty well. I will have to make a decision on where to get my 3rd rune fairly soon. If I manage to get tornado going by the time I finish depths I guess I'll just go for vaults 5. Normally with such a stealthy character I'd do abyss, but I don't feel comfortable at all with my ability to kill the monsters that show up in abyss.

Well, I'm not sure if cursing the rF+AC+ ring will give me the edge needed to get it castable, and I want to keep the option to swap freely to that ring, as it's my only source of rF. I was thinking I'd swap to the wiz ring when I get tornado just barely castable, and once it's got a decent success rate, I'd lose the wiz ring and curse the rF ring.

I could probably cast it now, or at least be really close, if I cursed the wiz ring, but I'm nervous about running around with 8ac, no rF, and 137 hp. It just seems like a couple fireballs could ruin my day really fast.

However, if I still can't reliably cast tornado by the time I finish depths, I may just go ahead and curse the wiz ring anyway. I can confuse fire giants pretty reliably, so I'll probably be OK without any rF in vaults5.

I meant to curse the rF+, AC+ ring. But maybe you should replace that robe with one of rC+ and replace the rC+ ring with wizardry. Then Tornado will be castable I believe.

Misc thoughts:

Amulet of Wind is kinda not very useful for you, anything else'd be better.

Absolutely curse a second ring, 14% (yellow) miscast tornado is fine and will go down further very soon.

Its criminally that you havent maxed dodging yet.

Well, maxing dodging would give me what, 2-3 more EV? And I already have 39, is it really going to make an appreciable difference? Because castable tornado certainly would, and then I am thinking I will just exclusively train fighting for more HP.

With the rings shown in that dump both cursed, tornado is at 10% fail, but still red. I think every single automatic stat up went to dex for this character....

Either way, it's close. I guess I'll go to slime and get some XP, hopefully pushing tornado over the edge. Of course, I have some brilliance potions anyway, so I could just go to vault 5, and use those when I want to cast tornado. I'm sure it'll become castable on its own soon enough with the vaults 5 xp.

I would rather not take off the RC ring because it also gives me int+4 and rcorr... but maybe that's stupid. It's not like I get hit with corroding attacks very often, and I'm not sure rcorr even does anything against entropy weavers.

Yeah, amulet of wind is doing very little for me, but I don't think there's much better than a rN+ amulet anywhere... I wish I could just take it off and see what my MR is without it, but stupid ash doesn't let you do that...

It's easy to calculate MR, 7 * XL + 40 for the hat. If you are XL 27, then it's 229, above MR+++++(200).

OK, my plan to dip into slime for some xp turned into "Wow slime is pretty easy for this guy" into "Oh, I'm on slime 5" and finally "TRJ is sleeping, stab stab, TRJ is dead".

The loot was garbage, but I got a rune, so that's good.

I'm very annoyed, I have 27 air magic with ash's boost, but swapped out the +4 int ring, now tornado is at 8% fail. I pumped int every time I got the chance, I'm wearing nothing to increase my fail chance, and tornado is still 8%?!?

I guess I'll keep pumping spellcasting and conj, I found a book with orb of destruction, and it's at 21% fail, so that will have to be my hex immune killer. I'm surprised that 24 int isn't enough to cast level 9 spells with 27 skill...

Yes, you have low Int, wear wizardry. AC+4 is worse than Tornado, especially when you are EV-based anyway.
AC is overestimated ;)

Edit. Enchant the shield, or are you still hoping for steam DA?

Quick update, apparently 26 spellcasting, 27 air magic, and 25 int gets you 3% fail tornado, yellow, so hooray?

It has come in handy, and I keep miskeying and casting it accidentally, luckily it didn't fail when it was red. I'm surprised 25 int is considered low, but oh well. Now I know for the future not to go for level 9 spells on an enchanter, at least without some wiz and/or +int.

The AC+4 wasn't the compelling reason to keep that ring, it was the rF+. I'm glad I had it too, because I had a lucky OOF get very high damage rolls on its 3x fireballs it shot at me in a row, leaving me at very low HP.
All my air magic training was a waste, but SpEn of ash can afford to waste copious amounts of XP apparently without a problem.

I'm just about to finish, I just wanted to post an update of what it took to get tornado out of red fail.

Yes, Int 25 is low for level 9 spell. Not sure why you are saying that it was a waste, you can get all 15 runes with Tornado now ;)

Hah, I suppose I could. But I decided to just ascend anyway, now I have an online sp win, and an en win, and I never ever have to play either again. I really don't like spriggan gameplay....

By the way, I was holding on to those EA scrolls to get into a trove that needed +2 FDA. Inside the trove was a ton of books (that's where I got OOD) and 2 EA scrolls! Not bad at all. After that I did enchant my buckler.

Actually, tornado did come in very handy during the ascent. Going out of zot 5 my way was blocked by a pan lord and an oof, I cast tornado, and just ran for it, they got swept behind me and I got away. Then I just cast it a few more times because I might as well...

Thanks for all your help, pointing me to elf was a really good idea, and I needed all the XP I could get for this ridiculous character.

EDIT: Damn, I just missed the spellcasting master title. "The Sorcerer" might be a better title than the master one anyone though...
